For a native Staten Islander like me who grew up in the 1960s and ‘70s a stone’s throw from the Narrows, Pat Salmon’s book was an absolute page turner. Her thorough research and dispassionate, clear-eyed perspective (interrupted only occasionally by laundry-list recitations of facts and figures that might have benefited from better editing) left me with a deeper understanding of the forces I had witnessed on the Island first-hand.
