Sacramento Beer

$21.99

Historically speaking, Sacramento benefited from a gold rush, an agricultural boom and, more recently, a brewing renaissance. The region's craft beer scene exploded from six to more than sixty breweries in about a decade, and the roots of that culture stretch back more than a century. Before Prohibition, thousands of acres of local hops supplied brewers across the country. Local farms are once again taking advantage of the temperate climate. In 1958, the University of California–Davis started America's foremost brewing science program, producing some of California's top brewers. Rubicon's 1989 award-winning IPA was just the beginning for the current, innovative resurgence. Author Justin Chechourka explores the complexities and nuance of this fermenting heritage.

Wines of Vermont

9781467118132

$21.99

Vermont's extreme climate may not seem ideal for wine production, but industry pioneers are proving otherwise. For nearly half a century, local winemakers developed distinctive fermentation techniques and adopted select crops to withstand icy winters. In 1970, Frank Jedlicka used traditional recipes to make wine with apples, maple and honey. North River and Grand View followed with other orchard and berry fruits. Harrison Lebowitz planted French hybrid grapes on a Lake Champlain island in the 1990s, and soon Vermont hosted some of America's first true cold-climate vineyards. Fresh tastes and resurrected flavors now symbolize the Green Mountain State's ripening wine industry. Todd Trzaskos reveals Vermont's identity as an innovative and maturing wine producer.

Washington County

9781467126281

$24.99

The area that would become Washington County was first settled by the explorers, trappers, and fur traders who traveled by steamboat along the Missouri River to an area inhabited by the Otoe, Missouri, and Omaha Indians. These settlers were pioneers of German, English, Danish, and Irish ancestry who migrated west in search of a better life. They came by steamboat, flatboat ferry, the occasional canoe, on horseback, in wagon teams, and sometimes by foot, venturing into the vast great plains of the frontier. They staked their claims, built sod and hewn-log homes, and traveled on the first post roads using old Indian trails. From the timberland along the river, they pushed westward into the lush rolling hills of red top, timothy, clover, and prairie grasses and tilled the virgin soil to build their futures. It would be another 15 years before the railroad broke ground. These brave men and women journeyed westward, traveling with all their possessions, into the untamed territory that they would later call home.

Oregon

$24.99

Oregon traces its beginnings back to 1841, when Bartley Runey built a log cabin just south of the village of Oregon along the Old Lead Trail. Primarily settled in the mid-1840s to 1850s, Oregon became a vibrant farming community. The railroad arrived in 1864 and provided a means of travel and transit, making Oregon the center of a much enlarged trade territory. By 1870, the population was 1,500, and many merchants, artisans, and tradesmen set up shop in the village to serve the needs of the community. Oregon was incorporated as a village in 1883. Following World War II, the coming age of the automobile with transportation and new highways and roads clearly marked Oregon's change from an agricultural community to a suburban one. Today, Oregon is an active community with nationally recognized schools, parks, and sports and recreation programs. Oregon, Wisconsin, is home to two special landmarks: the official marker at Prairie Mound Cemetery for Nathaniel Ames, the area's only Revolutionary War veteran, and the town's World War I monument, believed to be the first World War I memorial in the United States.

Kansas Beer

9781467140119

$24.99

Prohibition came early to Kansas in 1881, driving more than 125 breweries out of business or underground. Refusing to even vote on the 1933 national repeal, the state remained dry until 1948, with liquor by the drink finally being approved in 1987. Lawrence’s Chuck Magerl worked with the legislature to pen new laws allowing something (little known at the time) called a “microbrewery.” Chuck started the state’s first brewery in over a century, appropriately named Free State Brewing Company. John Dean of Topeka’s Blind Tiger Brewery counts more awards than any other brewer in the state, including Champion Brewer at the World Beer Cup in 2014. Props & Hops Brewing, in tiny Sylvan Grove, is owned and operated by an enterprising pilot who also owns and operates a crop-dusting business on the weekdays. Author Bob Crutchfield explores the state’s breweries and recounts the Sunflower State’s hoppy history.

South Nashville

9781467128070

$24.99

Over the past 150 years, the boundaries and demographics of South Nashville have changed dramatically. Starting out as an industrial and blue-collar area comprised of factories, mills, and rail yards, the area quickly grew, drawing thousands looking for employment or more affordable housing. South Nashville has traditionally been the most diverse part of the city, racially and culturally. During the past 30 years, stark changes have transformed the appearance of the southern portion of Nashville and Davidson County. Urban renewal programs and the construction of interstate highways resulted in the removal of thousands of buildings deemed as substandard, further obliterating traditional neighborhoods. Today, the district faces new challenges as many established neighborhoods now cope with gentrification.

South Dakota Wine

9781625858436

$21.99

A young commercial wine industry notwithstanding, winemaking traditions run deep in the Mount Rushmore State. Sodbusting pioneers like Anna Pesä and Jon Vojta defied South Dakota's harsh terrain and paved the way for Prairie Berry Winery. University biologists, including Dr. Ronald Peterson, cultivated the unique grapes needed for the climate, like the Valiant, Marquette, Brianna and Frontenac grapes. Despite subzero winters and torrid summers, strawberries, buffaloberries and rhubarb have grown on both sides of the Missouri River. Since the 1996 Farm Winery Bill passed, the state welcomed thirty vintners, including Strawbale Winery, Wilde Prairie Winery and Belle Joli' Winery. Denise DePaolo and Kara Sweet explore the heritage behind winemaking from the harvests of the prairie.

Rich clay deposits sparked the city’s industrial revolution, bringing fortune and soaring architecture to the area. And the death-defying 1951 escape from a sinking freighter by Danish immigrant Captain Henrik Kurt Carlsen earned him commendations from both President Harry S. Truman and King Frederick IX of Denmark. Award-winning writer Phill Provance surveys Woodbridge through more than three hundred years of history.

San Diego County Parks

$24.99

From its earliest park in 1913, the County of San Diego has more than 100 years of serving the public with unique park and recreational experiences while preserving significant natural and cultural resources. Officially, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors established the Department of Recreation in 1946. Today, the department manages over 50,000 acres of parks, campgrounds, trails, recreation centers, sports complexes, and ecological and open-space preserves. The county covers an area that includes coastline, mountains, deserts, lakes, lagoons, and other habitats—it is the nation's most biologically diverse county—and the department's properties mirror this biodiversity. They also contain sites that reveal the county's history: Mexican-era ranchos, an overland stage station, remnants of an early gristmill, Victorian mansions, traces of flume systems, Depression-era construction projects, an 1887 boathouse, and parks that reflect the advent of early automobile tourism.

20th-Century Retailing in Downtown Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids, Michigan was the center for shopping in western Michigan with department stores, five-and-dimes and more, until the advent of the shopping mall.

For decades, downtown Grand Rapids enjoyed a long run in the limelight as the epicenter of shopping in western Michigan. The vibrant Monroe Avenue corridor included three homegrown department stores, several chain department stores, five-and-dime stores, and scores of clothing and specialty retailers. It weathered mother nature, wars, the Great Depression, the advent of neighborhood shopping centers, and civil disturbances—but the one change it could not overcome was the regional shopping mall.

Jefferson County

9781467127202

$24.99

Situated among the rolling hills of north central Pennsylvania, Jefferson County was formed in 1804. Brookville became the county seat in 1830 by virtue of its location at the confluence of the North Fork Creek and Sandy Lick Creek, forming Redbank Creek, and its centrality in the more than 1,000 square miles that comprised the original county. Settlers timbered, farmed, and rafted products to market when water was high. With the completion of the Allegheny Valley low-grade railroad in 1874 and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad in 1882, mining dominated the area. Rail transportation made possible the development of glass, iron, silk, sheet metal, clothing, and furniture factories. During World War II, several companies manufactured materials in support of the Allies. Today, timbering flourishes, as do the powdered metal and glass container industries. The Allegheny National and Cook forests to the north and historic Brookville, Punxsutawney Phil, and the nationally renowned Coolspring Power Museum all attract many tourists.

Spearfish National Fish Hatchery

9781467110082

$24.99

In 1892, US Fish Commission scientist Barton Warren Evermann was on assignment to South Dakota from Washington, DC. His charge: survey fisheries and locate a site for a federal hatchery. The foray took him to the Black Hills and springs of Ames Canyon that poured into Spearfish Creek. The site was ideal. By 1899, Spearfish National Fish Hatchery started raising trout for the Black Hills and points beyond, and its effects on fishing were profound. In time, the mission changed, and so did the hatchery's name. Today's D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives—named to honor the hatchery's first superintendent—is a treasure trove of information related to fisheries conservation. The facility's historic and commanding hatchery building is iconic in the community and a one-of-a-kind museum.

Becoming Portsmouth

Iconoclast Jay Smith opened the Press Room, the celebrated music club. A group of concerned citizens saved the Music Hall, the last of Portsmouth's vaudeville theaters. Industrial Bank

9780738592893

$24.99

Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt declared a bank holiday on March 5, 1933, closing banks across the country until they proved financial soundness. Meanwhile, as the United States crawled out of the Great Depression, Jesse H. Mitchell and a group of black businessmen accomplished the extraordinary—they started a black-owned bank on a street known as Black Broadway in the nation's capital. Mitchell, a Howard University–educated lawyer and realtor, and his friends sold $65,000 in stock, and in the sweltering heat on August 20, 1934, Industrial Bank of Washington opened for business. A range of black investors rallied around the effort, from individuals, churches, and service-oriented organizations to savvy business owners. The bank has carried on for three generations: Mitchell's son B. Doyle Mitchell Sr. succeeded him as president in 1953, who was then succeeded in 1993 by his grandson B. Doyle Mitchell Jr. as president and CEO and his granddaughter Patricia A. Mitchell as executive vice president.
