Only in the Bayou State do Louisianans travel door to door on horseback collecting gumbo ingredients for Mardi Gras gatherings. Residents compete in egg pâquer contests to see who can crack their opponent's Easter egg first. Louisiana is a place where frequent collisions with natural disasters can inspire a drink like Pat O'Brien's famous hurricane. And the state's history is filled with colorful figures like Governor Earl K. Long, whose wife committed him to a mental institution—only for him to use his political pull to inspire his own release. Elsewhere these accounts may seem odd or farfetched, but it all happens in Louisiana. Join author Sam Irwin as he details these intriguing Pelican State stories with pithy observations, humorous asides and droll determinations.

The story of Putnam County is a twice-told tale. After its original establishment in 1842 was declared unconstitutional, the county was reestablished in 1854. The county seat of Cookeville was named in honor of War of 1812 veteran and Tennessee state senator Richard F. Cooke, and the county name was adopted in honor of Revolutionary War veteran Gen. Israel Putnam. Relatively isolated until 1890 with the coming of the Tennessee Central Railroad, Cookeville and Putnam County have grown into a vibrant hub for the 14-county Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. Located on the scenic Highland Rim some 70 miles east of Nashville, Cookeville has become a top retirement area with access to regional medical facilities, the Tennessee Technological University, and other amenities. Through the use of photographs from archival sources and private collections, Images of America: Cookeville and Putnam County captures the small town atmosphere and appealing qualities of this unique area of the Upper South.

Sebasticook Valley, located between the east and west branches of the Sebasticook River in central Maine, consists of several communities. This book showcases the six towns at the valley's center: Hartland, St. Albans, Newport, Pittsfield, Palmyra, and Detroit. The communities share many ties, including the river itself; farming, manufacturing, and families; multiple railroad lines; lakes and ponds that attract summer visitors and sportsmen for hunting and fishing; and religious and military encampments and reunions. Located at the crossroads of Maine, the valley is familiar to travelers through central Maine or to the northern counties and Canada. The rise and fall of the Sebasticook River over a century has influenced the region's history and landscape, fortifying the Yankee independence and spirit of area residents.

With claims staked, 1870s prospectors at Cooke City patiently waited for adequate transportation to get their ore to market. Eager enough, they named the town in honor of Northern Pacific tycoon Jay Cooke. Ironically, Cooke’s influence in creating Yellowstone National Park stunted the growth of the town, as the park blocked any efforts to support a railroad through its borders. For more than sixty years, residents waited for rail until a new economy took hold—tourism. The dreams of the miners still live on in tumble-down shacks and rusty old mining equipment. And the successful vision of entrepreneurs offering rustic relaxation at the doorstep of Yellowstone continues to lure visitors. Historian Kelly Hartman recounts the saga that left hundreds battling for a railroad that never came.

Northeast of Yellowstone National Park, between precipitous mountains along Soda Butte Creek, lies the old mining town of Cooke City. Ramshackle buildings of yesteryear and scars of exploitation still remain, quietly telling stories about this quaint community. When Adam Horn Miller picked up a piece of rich galena ore in the vicinity of the Clark's Fork drainage, it was destined to play an important part in the mining and development of the area. Early explorers, prospectors, and settlers were thwarted by Indians, rugged mountains without roads, and winters in the high country. Until 1877, most of the work was prospecting, then smelters were built. A railroad was expected but never materialized, so only marginal profits were made in mining. The area's scenic wonders, however, are Cooke City's true wealth.

Cooke County, Texas, located in the north central part of the state, has a richly varied history. Those who first entered the area-Native Americans, gold seekers headed for California, army officials, and settlers-discovered a raw, unspoiled land. Eyewitness accounts speak of grass that was as high as a man's head, and indeed, the land was rich for farming and ranching. In 1841, W.S. Peters and associates signed their first contract with the Republic of Texas, which provided that within three years they would bring six hundred families into what came to be known as the Peters Colony. In 1848, the state legislature created Cooke County, named for a hero of the Texas War for Independence. Over the next 150 years, the area changed dramatically. The stagecoach arrived in 1858, and conveyed freight, passengers, and mail. The Civil War presented economic and social difficulties that had to be overcome. Two major cattle trails flanked Cooke County, and cowboys roared into Gainesville to visit the saloons, get supplies, gamble, and visit the soiled doves. The discovery of oil, and the resultant wealth that it brought, forever altered the face of the county.

Granted the influential position as a half-shire town in the mid-1790s, Hopkinton enjoyed a period of social and political prominence in the state, even nearly becoming New Hampshire's state capital a decade later. While the state's political hub found its home in nearby Concord, Hopkinton flourished into a town rich in industry, abundant in natural beauty, and brimming with character. Comprised of three unique villages—Contoocook, Hopkinton, and West Hopkinton—the town presents three distinctively different versions of quintessential New England life. The Contoocook River's strength was harnessed to power mills producing leather, box-making machinery, and silk. When the railroad arrived in 1850, commerce expanded and visitors arrived to enjoy the peaceful settings. Hopkinton Village became a favorite stop for wealthy travelers who enjoyed the Beech Hill Country Club and accommodations such as the nearby Perkins Inn. Through vintage images culled from the Hopkinton Historical Society and private collections, Hopkinton and Contoocook chronicles the evolution of these communities, challenged by natural disasters and the inevitable effects of time, and showcases their steadfast ability to maintain their allure, historical ambience, and timeless charm.

Located within the boundaries of the towns of Allenstown and Pembroke, Suncook, first granted as a township in 1728, has developed a rich history all its own. Railroad transportation was instrumental to the establishment and growth of three large textile mills. The first railroad system, the Concord and Portsmouth line, began in 1852. A second line, the Suncook Valley Railroad, followed in 1869. Drawn by advertisements in Canadian newspapers, French Canadian workers began migrating from Quebec in large numbers. By the late 1800s, Suncook had become known as "le Petit Canada." The power of the Suncook and Merrimack Rivers, scenic beauty in the area, and the connectivity brought through transportation helped transform a small industrial village into a vibrant and lasting community.

A Cape Cod cook book! you who stray / Par from the old sand-bordered Bay, / The cranberry bogs, the tossing pines. / The wind-swept beaches frothing lines, / you city dwellers who, like me. / Were children, playing by the sea. / Whose fathers manned the vanished ships / —Hark! do I hear you smack your lips? —Joseph C.
