Evanston Hospital School of Nursing

$23.99

Using historical images and recollections, Evanston Hospital School of Nursing: 1898–1984 highlights the marketing, education, curriculum, and values of EHSN as well as the students’ experience and dormitory life.

Evanston Hospital was founded in 1891, followed by the school of nursing seven years later. Evanston Hospital School of Nursing (EHSN) provided education at a reasonable cost while the students provided care to patients in between studies. In its first 50 years, the school graduated 1,157 nurses, with the first class of two graduating in 1901. EHSN, like other diploma programs, flourished until educational cost escalated, technology boomed, training methods evolved, and a conversation about where and how nurses should be educated began. After 86 years of training nurses, EHSN closed.

Carolyn Hope Smeltzer and Barbara Ann McQuillan, 1972 EHSN graduates, are proud of their education and realize the historical value of the program. Having graduated 50 years ago, they are passionate about preserving the school’s history and capturing classmates’ memories. Their desire to keep alive EHSN history enables past generations of diploma graduates to cherish their own memories and future generations of nurses to look back on past teaching practices. This book will elicit familiar fond memories for all who attended or taught in any diploma school of nursing.

Oroville

$24.99

Oroville, California, has always been a land of innovation and resource. While the Feather River was dredged for millions in gold in the late-19th century, the climate of Oroville was discovered to be well suited to growing oranges and olives, as well for a viable logging industry. One of America's first electric railroads passed through the town, and in 1937, the Feather River Highway stretched all the way to Reno. In 1968, the largest dam in the nation was constructed, and that feat of engineering provided electricity to a large number of California residents. Captured here in over 200 vintage images, James Lenhoff shows readers a California town that boomed with the Gold Rush and today remains a thriving community. Showcasing photographs from personal and community collections, the images in this book portray the residents that made Oroville what it is today, from the famous miners to the local farmers. Here are stunning vintage and rarely seen photographs of Oroville, including the foothills, the Feather River Canyon, and the building of its famous dam.

Illinois State University was founded in 1857 as Illinois's first public higher education institution. Initially named Illinois State Normal University (ISNU) due to its mission to train teachers, the university gained early national recognition for its work in developing educational philosophies. One of those philosophies, Herbartianism, was brought to ISNU in the 1890s and was cultivated by some of the profession's leading educators, including Charles DeGarmo, head of modern languages and reading at the university. ISNU celebrated 100 years of service in 1957 and, on January 1, 1964, dropped normal from its name. Now known as Illinois State University, the institution offers over 130 undergraduate and graduate degree programs ranging from the humanities to the sciences and nursing within its six colleges. With an enrollment of over 20,000 students and over 200,000 alumni, Redbird Nation continues to thrive as it moves toward its third century of academic excellence.

Rock Valley College

9781467162753

$24.99

Since opening its doors in September 1965, Rock Valley College has been a cornerstone of education and community for northern Illinois. From its formation following a district-wide referendum in October 1964, the college embraced national and regional movements, demonstrating that Rock Valley College’s story is one of progress and transformation.

During the 1970s, the college expanded educational, employment, and athletic opportunities for women, and in the 1980s, it confronted the region’s Rust Belt decline through investments in advanced technical and health care fields. This legacy continued in the 21st century when Rock Valley College formed partnerships with Northern Illinois University and OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. The college’s dedication to high-quality liberal arts and science education has empowered students to transfer to four-year universities, while its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment reflects the growing diversity of the community. Rock Valley College’s influence extends far beyond the classroom. Its alumni—over 33,000 degree and certificate holders—serve as a testament to the college's lasting impact.

Daniel Blumlo, PhD, is a history professor at Rock Valley College, where he has taught since 2010. This book draws upon images and documents from the Rock Valley College Archives and the Starlight Theater Archives to chronicle the college’s dynamic journey.

On September 25, 1873, Dr. Nathan Jackson Morrison, the first president of Drury College, stood in the second-story window of an unfinished building and rang a borrowed boardinghouse dinner bell to announce the opening of the school. The six faculty members and thirty-nine students in attendance that day had to share the simple brick structure with carpenters and plasterers, and the isolated campus consisted of a few hardscrabble acres of prairie dotted with hazel brush and hickory saplings. Today, Drury University sits upon a 90-acre campus and has over 2,200 undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students. The school has a vibrant and innovative academic program, a strong tradition in athletics, and over 30,000 living alumni. For 150 years, Drury University has stood as an institution that blends liberal learning and professional studies in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks.

Saint Mary's College: Her Memories Beyond The Avenue depicts recollections from alumnae dating back to the early 1900s. The pictures and correspondence in this work come from personal scrapbooks compiled by alumnae while they were students and years after they graduated. They reveal the growth of tradition and memories in the lives of Saint Mary's students over the decades. During the mid- 1930s many women left letters tucked between the stones of the Avenue's front gate each night for the gentleman across the road at Notre Dame. During their senior year in 2004, three best friends turned off the first-floor lights in Le Mans Hall and said goodnight to Sister Madeleva and Mother Angela on their way up to second floor library. These priceless memories capture moments in time that were enjoyed by only a few, but now can be treasured by all.

In 2016, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) reached its 150th year. What sustains an institution is sometimes extraordinary, sometimes mundane, and often simply a matter of the sheer will of those involved. An unparalleled museum school, SAIC embodies something greater than the individuals who have passed through it, and yet it has also depended upon the unique and special nature of its protagonists—its founders who survived the Great Chicago Fire and rebuilt the school, a president who cast the hands and face of Abraham Lincoln, an alumna who was a celebrated illustrator and an activist in the women's suffrage movement, the creators of monumental sculptures throughout the country, and numerous scholars of art history and technique—to challenge and shape its form. The school's history is punctuated by marvelous moments of heightened public discourse in art making and scholarship. This book represents a glimpse into the lives of generations of students, staff, and faculty as full participants in an astounding learning environment.

In 1945, faculty and students at Chicago's Central YMCA College walked out to protest admission quotas on race and religion and created one of the nation's first institutions to admit all qualified students. Despite having no endowment, library, or campus, Roosevelt College attracted more than 1,000 students in its first year. The next year, it purchased Chicago's famed Auditorium Building. By 1949, enrollment topped 6,000, and the Roosevelt story captured the nation's imagination. In 1954, Florence Ziegfeld's Chicago Musical College merged with Roosevelt, and five years later the college became a university. As it nears its 70th anniversary, Roosevelt has six colleges, two campuses, and over 85,000 alumni, including former Chicago mayor Harold Washington. This book celebrates a pioneering institution that helped shape the history of American higher education.

Plans to establish the first public institution of higher education in the Dayton region were laid in 1961. At the time, Dayton was the second largest metropolitan city in Ohio. The need for a public higher-education institution became critical as Dayton emerged as a center of high technology that needed an educated workforce. In 1962, many key business leaders throughout the community led a community-wide fundraising effort to secure the necessary seed money for the branch campus of Ohio State University and Miami University. In the fall of 1964, with the completion of Allyn Hall, the campus within a building, the Dayton campus of Ohio State University and Miami University opened its doors to 3,203 enrolled students. It became an independent institution in 1967 and was named Wright State University to honor Dayton natives and aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. Under the leadership of its sixth president, David Hopkins, Wright State University continued to expand its campus while building lasting relationships with the community.

On November 19, 1906, the School of the Ozarks was chartered by the State of Missouri.

The poverty-stricken Ozarks had limited educational opportunities, but when the first students enrolled, the school did not depend on tuition dollars. Instead, each student worked at the school in exchange for an education. Today, the College of the Ozarks is a liberal arts college where students still work for their degrees. The institution is recognized for its emphasis on academics, faith, patriotism, and vocation, and it continues its commitment to the mission “to provide the advantages of a Christian education for youth of both sexes, especially those found worthy, but who are without sufficient means to procure such training.” Located near Branson, Missouri, the campus hosts thousands of visitors each year who enjoy Williams Memorial Chapel; Edwards Mill; and the Keeter Center, modeled after a historic building on the Point Lookout campus. Visitors discover a unique college where generations of students have gained a life-changing education.

Gwen Simmons is the director of Lyons Memorial Library at the College of the Ozarks and an alumna of the institution. Most of the images featured in this book are a part of the college’s archival collections at the library, alumni center, and museum.

University of Toledo

In 1872, Jesup W. Scott donated 160 acres of land to serve as an endowment for the Toledo University of Arts and Trades. Unfortunately, the university failed in its early years but was resurrected in 1884 by Scott's three sons, who gave the remaining assets to the City of Toledo to create a manual training school. By 1909, the institution was becoming a full-fledged university but struggled financially and did not have a permanent home. That changed in 1931 with the construction of the Bancroft Street campus, including the iconic University Hall, built in the Collegiate Gothic style. The University of Toledo remained a municipally supported university until 1967, when it joined Ohio's higher education system. In 2006, the University of Toledo merged with the former Medical College of Ohio, a state-supported institution founded in 1964. Today, the University of Toledo serves 20,000 students in degree programs as varied as medicine, law, engineering, business, education, pharmacy, nursing, and liberal arts.

Iowa Wesleyan University was founded in 1842, four years before Iowa’s statehood. Pioneer Hall, in use by students and faculty by 1846, is among the oldest academic buildings in continuous use west of the Mississippi River. Abolition and women’s enfranchisement were key hallmarks of this pioneer Methodist school. Iowa Wesleyan graduated its first female student, Lucy Killpatrick Byrkit, in 1859. Iowa Wesleyan’s president, James Harlan, entered the national spotlight when he was elected to the US Senate in 1855. He was a stalwart abolitionist and supporter of Pres. Abraham Lincoln. Just after the Civil War, Iowa Wesleyan produced the first female attorney in the United States, Arabella Babb Mansfield (1866), who passed the bar exam in 1869. This small-town Iowa university also produced two explorers of space: James Van Allen (1935), discoverer of the magnetic belts that radiate around the planet, and Peggy Whitson (1981), the first female to serve as commander of the International Space Station. Today, Iowa Wesleyan University has the most diverse student body campus in Iowa, with young scholars hailing from small towns, big cities, and many nations abroad.

University of Northern Iowa

$24.99

The University of Northern Iowa has evolved from its humble beginnings in 1876 as a normal school with 27 students to a thriving educational community with a student body of over 13,000. But as this pictorial history vividly depicts, its founding principles have remained the same: a commitment to high-quality education, an impressive teaching staff, and eager students with a desire to learn. Originally established in a former home for the orphans of Iowa's Civil War veterans, the University of Northern Iowa has matured from a small teacher's college to the university which is internationally known today. Inspired leadership from university presidents helped bridge this transition, and to give guidance to an institution deeply affected by the Great Depression, emerging only to face new challenges brought on by World War II. WAVES and US Army Air Corps personnel trained here, and GIs were educated upon their return from service. Civil Rights, the anti-war movement, and the technology revolution all helped shape the university into the excellent institution it is today.

For many years the residents of Southwestern Illinois lacked convenient, affordable access to higher education. To address this situation, Southern Illinois University opened residence centers at the former Shurtleff College in Alton and in East St. Louis in 1957. Enrollment at the two residence centers during 1957-1958 exceeded all expectations, and continued to increase dramatically. In 1960, Illinois voters approved a statewide Universities Bond Issue that included $25 million designated for an Edwardsville campus of SIU. Situated on 2,600 acres of Illinois hills northeast of St. Louis, and featuring buildings designed by architect Gyo Obata, the beautiful campus opened in September of 1965. Within five years, enrollment surpassed 13,000. Since 1957, SIUE has become the largest university in the St. Louis metropolitan area, and has produced more than 70,000 graduates. The university today offers 83 degree programs to students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business, Engineering, Dental Medicine, Nursing, and Education.

Lincoln University was founded in 1866 for the education of freed blacks after the Civil War. This book focuses on the years between 1920 and 1970, a span of time during which many of the university's
most signifi cant developments occurred. During this period, Lincoln Institute was elevated to university status, and graduate programs were added to the curriculum. A court-ordered law school was established and graduated many accomplished and respected African American attorneys before disbanding in the 1950s. During this era, the university was often referred to as the Harvard of the Midwest due to the acclaimed reputation of its faculty. Many alumni have made outstanding contributions at local, state, and national levels. After the 1954 United States Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision, the university integrated its student body. As a result, student enrollment changed dramatically from all black to a signifi cantly white clientele. Columbia College Chicago was founded in 1890 as the Columbia School of Oratory.

It was a coeducational institution with teaching methods of physical culture, expression, elocution, public reading, and dramatic action. From the 1930s onward, the college focused on the growing fields of radio, television, and other mass communication. By the 1960s, the school had created a liberal-arts curriculum with a hands-on approach to arts and media education and a progressive social agenda. In the 1970s, the college relocated to its permanent home in the South Loop. Today, with deference to its past, the college encourages students to author the culture of their times, to produce a body of work, and to realize their abilities according to the school's original motto ""esse quam videri"" (to be rather than to seem).

On February 15, 1865, eighteen anxious students gathered on the second floor of a stone building belonging to School District No. 1 of Lyon County to begin their quest for learning at the Kansas State Normal School. It was less than two years after Gov. Thomas Carney signed the bill creating what has become one of the most renowned teacher education universities in the nation. Despite economic setbacks and the loss of the main building to fire in the 1870s, the normal school attracted students from every county within the state. By the end of 1892, the board of regents reported that the Kansas State Normal School was the largest in the nation. In 1923, the school's name was changed to Kansas State Teachers College, recognizing its importance in teacher education. Today, Emporia State University continues to offer outstanding academic programs and an energetic campus environment that has been changing lives since that day in 1865.

The University of St. Francis

The story of the University of St. Francis began in 1920 when the seeds were planted for Assisi Junior College. The school's evolution continued when, as the College of St. Francis, it awarded bachelor's degrees in 1930, became coeducational in 1970, and attained university status in 1998. The university owes its existence to the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, founded by Mother Alfred Moes in 1865, with Mother Thomasine Fryewska serving as the first president of the institution. Currently this vibrant community claims over 3,500 students on the main campus in Joliet, the many off-campus sites, and online. Throughout the years, the school has grown, adding buildings, programs, and students, but has remained rooted in its Franciscan identity of respect, service, integrity, and compassion.

John Carroll University documents the rich and interesting story of this historic school.

In September 1886, St. Ignatius College opened in a working-class neighborhood on Cleveland's Near West Side. The one classroom building was unpretentious, its mostly Irish and German students were few, its Jesuit faculty numbered four, and its opening was ignored by Cleveland's daily newspapers. Over the next 125 years, the small college became John Carroll University, moved to University Heights, built handsome buildings on a landscaped campus, gained students and faculty, and achieved national recognition. This is the story of how that happened.

Western Female Seminary, the first daughter institution of Mount Holyoke College, opened its doors in 1855 as a Christian institution. The seminary, which became Western College for Women, was founded on the Mt. Holyoke plan, with a strong emphasis on academics. Many of its graduates in the 19th century served as home and foreign missionaries, and by the 20th century, young women from many foreign countries attended Western. In the 1950s, the curriculum was expanded to include a strong international emphasis. Western was the first college in the country to have an artist-in-residence, when composer Edgar Stillman Kelley was invited to live on campus. Western attracted national attention when it hosted civil rights training for Freedom Summer 1964. In the 1970s, independent study programs were developed, and the college became coeducational. With its diverse architecture and the early emphasis on landscaping on its rolling campus, the college was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

In 1819, Daniel Drake founded the Medical College of Ohio, which later became the University of Cincinnati (UC), College of Medicine.

Thus began two centuries of innovation in health education that has made UC a globally recognized leader in educating generations of professionals in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health sciences. As the 19th century came to a close, the importance of science-based medicine began to gain traction. Its medical faculty, including Christian R.Holmes, were primary contributors to Abraham Flexner’s now-famous report that revolutionized medical education.UC continued to shape health education throughout the 20th century, perhaps most notably by George Heuer in surgery, Benjamin Rachford in pediatrics, Herbert Flessa in emergency medicine, Laura Logan in nursing, and Joseph Kowalewski in pharmacy. And in the 21st century, the tradition continues with the vision and leadership of people like Donald Harrison in forming the College of Allied Health Sciences and creative power of Anil Menon in leading the formation of the undergraduate medical sciences program.

Saint Mary's College compiles nearly 200 engaging images from the extensive Saint Mary's College Archives to create the first exclusively visual history of the college's prestigious 150 years. The images in this work illustrate the story of one of the first Catholic women's colleges in Indiana from shortly after the Sisters of the Holy Cross arrived from Le Mans, France in 1843 to present day. Envisioned by these women of faith as a place to enrich the minds and spirits of the girls of the frontier, Saint Mary's began its tradition of pioneering education for women. This original mission enabled the college to adapt to the contemporary needs of its students and continue to grow and become a regional leader in science, education, and the arts.

As the number of students increased, and the community and world around the campus changed, Saint Mary's College evolved by continuing to honor tradition. The pictures reflect the evolution of the student body, campus, and academic life.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha, inaugurated in 1968, emerged from the Municipal University of Omaha established in 1931, which grew out of the University of Omaha founded in 1908. In each of the school's three lives, the faculty sought to provide quality education for recent high school graduates and adults returning to school in a well-rounded learning environment. The commuter college moved from relying on charitable donations and tuition to a city tax base and ultimately state revenues. The campus grew numerically and spatially. Accommodating students and faculty, setting priorities and funding initiatives is a continuous challenge not always met expeditiously. The exciting visual cavalcade and text captures a century of public higher education in America's urban heartland and the role of graduates in American society.

Cleveland was the country's sixth largest city and at its peak in prominence and prosperity as an industrial and commercial center. The opportunities were there and the college sought ways, like adopting a cooperative education program, to help students to prepare for them. For 42 years, Fenn provided a quality low-cost education to thousands of students in Cleveland and northeast Ohio--students for whom such an education would have been otherwise unattainable.

In the early 1920s, Waterloo businessman Henry B. Allen donated $200,000 and 80 acres of land to the Allen Memorial Hospital Association to establish a hospital in memory of Mary, his wife. The hospital opened in 1925 and was operated by the Deaconess Hospital Association of the Evangelical Church. The School of Nursing was founded in 1925, but a lack of resources during the Depression forced the hospital into receivership and the school was closed. Hospital management was assumed by the Lutheran Good Samaritan Society in 1938, and the school reopened in 1942 as the Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing. In 1989, the school became Allen College of Nursing, a degree-granting institution. Today, as Allen College–UnityPoint Health, it offers an associate degree in radiography; bachelor of science degree in nursing; bachelor of health science degree with majors in diagnostic medical sonography, nuclear medicine technology, medical laboratory science, public health, and dental hygiene; master of science degrees in nursing and occupational therapy; and two doctoral degrees in health professions education and nursing practice. York College

$24.99

The dream of York College involved hundreds of people—its reality has touched the lives of thousands. Born in a small town on the rolling plains of Nebraska in 1890, the United Brethren Church and citizens of York established York College on an empty expanse of prairie called East Hill. Its earliest classes, offered in rented rooms above a dry goods store on the town square, established the foundations of a Christian college. The institution grew as buildings arrived with each passing decade. These brick-and-mortar symbols of the college's progress include Old Main, Hulitt Conservatory of Music, Alumni Library, and Middlebrook Hall. When a tragic fire engulfed the school's venerable Old Main in 1951, York College was pulled from the ashes as a second group of believers took the institution's reins. The Churches of Christ determined to continue the dream, standing on the shoulders of those who had come before them.

On September 13, 1876, the bell on Atwood Hall rang, students assembled, and Rio Grande College began its 140-year search for identity and its struggle for existence. Ira Haning, a Freewill Baptist minister, conveyed the idea of a college to a prominent couple, Nehemiah and Permelia Atwood. Nehemiah passed away in 1869, and supposedly, his last words were Permelia, build the college. Permelia deeded 10 acres and financed Atwood Hall and the Boarding Hall, and Rio Grande College became a reality. Upon Permelia's death in 1885, Rio Grande faced the first of many financial pitfalls. Her estate was willed to the college, but the heirs of her second husband contested it in an action that would be resolved by the Ohio Supreme Court in 1896. As a college, junior college, community college, and currently, as a university, Rio Grande continues to seek a definitive identity.
