During its long, legendary history, Campobello Island has been known by many names: the Native American word for it was Abahquict, French explorers called it Port aux Coquilles, and the English named it Outer Island. Campobello rises on the outer edge of Passamaquoddy Bay just across the water from Eastport, Maine, and only a stone's throw away from the Narrows at Lubec, Maine. Campobello Island features rare historical photographs gleaned from the collection of the Campobello Public Library and Museum, other archives, and private collections of many local families. The book chronicles the century-long rule of the Owen family, depicts the fishing villages of Welshpool and Wilson's Beach, salutes the island's military heroes, and captures the faces of countless residents, including the Roosevelts, who were members of the summer colony for more than half a century. The story of "Sunrise at Campobello" rounds out this extraordinary history.

North Vancouver occupies one of the world's most scenic urban settings. Lonsdale Avenue, running from the waters of Burrard Inlet to the mountains of the Coast Range, is the community's de facto main street. In early 1903, Alfred St. George Hamersley
purchased a substantial parcel of land from Henry Heywood Lonsdale and James Pemberton Fell's Lonsdale Estate. Hamersley's property, called the Town of Lonsdale, later became the town site of North Vancouver. In North Vancouver's early years, Lonsdale Avenue was the spine along which the community developed. Lonsdale is still North Vancouver's most important street and acts as the main artery for commercial, political, and social life. Through rare vintage photographs illustrating how people lived, played, and worked, North Vancouver's Lonsdale Neighbourhood explores the community's fascinating history.

In its 225 years of existence, Saint John has undergone numerous transformations to become the city it is today. In 1783, an influx of American settlers resulted in upwards of 16,000 residents, and
by 1867, the city was the fourth largest in Canada. The most catastrophic fire in the city's history came in 1877, resulting in the loss of some 1,600 homes and businesses. Many of the structures were
rebuilt and are still standing today, contributing to the city's Victorian character. By the 1950s, historic structures began to disappear in the name of progress, and a huge urban renewal development was
carried out in the 1960s. Saint John: 1877-1980 highlights the many changes the city has seen over the years, through photographs of its neighbourhoods, play places, tourist attractions, and residents.

In the 1850s, lumber mill owner W. Kilby Reynolds, with engineer Edward R. Serrell, succeeded in building the first suspension bridge to connect divided Saint John. This operated as a toll crossing until 1858, when it became a government-owned structure. From then until the present, there have been two vehicular-pedestrian bridges and two rail bridges serving travelers crossing Saint John Harbour at the gorge at the Reversing Falls. By the third quarter of the 19th century, there was talk and plans for a second bridge, one which would cross at Navy Island to the North End. It took about 80 years before this plan came to fruition, and the Saint John Harbour Bridge opened in 1968. Through this rich collection of photographs, Bridging Saint John Harbour clearly shows the importance of the varied connector bridges over Saint John Harbour and how they came to be built.

Wallaceburg, a progressive industrial community, has
always been on the move. Its reliance on the local waterways through the Sydenham and Chenal Ecarte
Rivers illuminates an important lifeline in the town. The rivers' influence spans from the lumber boom days of the last century through the industrial periods to a primarily recreational view of Wallaceburg's waterways. The wide variety of images in this collection reflects the many facets of the community at both work and play. Wallaceburg: Faces and Places displays photographs from the collections of the Wallaceburg and District Museum, the Mann Historical Files, and Roy Mathany, who covered the World War II years via the Dominion Glass War Services Committee.

In 1783, Peter Clinch arrived at the mouth of the Magaguadavic River and, finding he could not navigate the forty-foot falls, climbed up the cliffs of the Fundy shoreline. On the intervale above, he founded the town of St. George. The falls were to play a significant role in the development of the area, driving mills first for the granite works and later for the pulp mill that became the economic mainstay of the town. The stunning photographs in St. George and Its Neighbours tell the story of how the town of St. George was built, how it developed, and how it survived various calamities like fires, industry closure, and highway realignment. This
spectacular collection of images, which date from as early as 1890, focuses on the people of St. George and the surrounding communities and includes where
they worshipped, worked, relaxed, fished, and farmed. Major storms, spring freshets, ball games, and crowds listening to the local brass band make up a sampling of the events covered in this lively book. Glimpses of picture-perfect fishing villages, smart resorts with turreted hotels, Fundy's lonely clam flats, winding hiking trails, and sandy beaches make clear why the surrounding areas were considered for the province's first national park in the 1940s.

The more than 200 images for personal and private collections, some published here for the first time, serve to present a stunning and fascinating commemorative pictorial album of Chatham's rich history.

At the end of the nineteenth century, in the newly created city of Chatham, the possibilities seemed endless and almost utopian. Gone were the ramshackle wooden shacks that dominated its early days, and in their place were stately homes made of brick and stone. Taverns, mills, mercantile stores, mechanics' shops, shipbuilders, and iron foundries blossomed and flourished. Tall and small ships crowded the banks of the bustling Thames River, which had become Chatham's lifeline to the world. Such is the Chatham presented in this volume, which contains nearly two hundred striking images gleaned from personal and public collections. Many of these items, some published here for the first time, serve to present a stunning and fascinating commemorative pictorial album of Chatham's rich history. They will encourage readers to take a stroll on Tecumseh Park's lovers' lane, to board a grand steamer for an exciting river excursion, to prowl a King Street teeming with bicycles, horses, and carts, and to take a ride on those strange new horseless carriages.

Nestled in southwestern Ontario along the scenic Avon River, Stratford is an industrial centre recognized for its scenic parks and world-famous Shakespearean theatre. The first settlers arrived in 1827, when the Canada Company surveyed the area. Incorporated in 1854 as the village of Stratford, the city today retains a rich heritage preserved in photographs and documents stored at the Stratford-Perth Archives. This compilation of photographs from the Stratford-Perth Archives, historical notes, and anecdotes provides a magnificent anniversary souvenir of the city of Stratford. Stratford includes previously unpublished photographs as well as frequently requested images, including stunning historical views of Queen's Park, the regatta, local
sports teams, the 1933 general strike, and the Perth Regiment. Stratford covers the period from 1864 to 1964, shortly after the Canadian National Railway shops left the area, reveals why downtown has so many buildings with towers, and tells the story of the Shakespeare connection. It will fascinate residents, past residents, and tourists.

With Saint John's North End, we continue our journey into the past of this lively and beloved city. This new pictorial history combines a wealth of over two hundred photographs taken between 1864 and 1975 with insightful commentary. The images cover all areas of the original City of Portland, from Indiantown to Mount Pleasant Avenue, and from Paradise Row to the Reversible Falls. Some of the scenes included were
captured before the Indiantown Fire of 1899--all are rare and depict a heartfelt appreciation for the North End. Each page turn invites readers to experience a taste of nostalgia. We go to work at the Snowflake Lime Kiln, visit the Community Market, take in a movie at the Regent Theater, or go to Splanes to buy a fishing reel. Readers get reacquainted with some familiar faces like Oakie O'Connor or Carl White. Family and children are not forgotten, as we look at Joe Logan's new tricycle, or watch as every kid on Wellsley Avenue goes bike riding. This fascinating collection of photographs brings to life the dramatic and colourful history of Saint John West and its neighbours. Over two hundred images show how this area developed during the last century as the fishing, shipping, and rail centre of Saint John; how it saw its business and residential districts gutted; how it struggled to rebuild itself and grow again, only to suffer a disastrous fire, revive a second time, and then slide slowly into decline during the latter decades of this century.

Together David Goss and Fred Miller guide us through the city's vibrant past: the events, industries, places, and people which have defined Saint John West over the decades. Photographs show the arrival of the railway, the flood of new immigrants, the development of the harbour, and the growth of the shipping industry. We see how significantly working conditions have changed over the decades for fishermen, foundry workers, and other local people. We see how much the local landscape has changed, with pictures of buildings both familiar and long gone and bustling streets such as King Street, Protection Street, and Union Street complete with drugstores, chowder houses, saloons, and other local landmarks no longer with us. The images capture catastrophes such as the Waterfront Fire of 1931 and celebrations such as parades and festivals. Most of all, they preserve and honour the lives of the ordinary people of Saint John West: streetcar drivers, firemen, harbour workers, fishermen, store owners, tipplers, schoolchildren, and foundry workers, amongst many others. We see how buildings, technology, fashions, and lifestyles have changed while a sense of community and a zest for life among local residents has remained constant over the decades.
