Regular price $23.00 Sale price $17.25 Save 25%Much has been written about the horrors of Southern Civil War prisons, but very little has been written about the deplorable conditions inside Northern prisons. While deprivation affected even the civilian population of the South, the North used it as a tool to punish their prisoners. Twenty-five years after the war, a nationally prominent physician and medical researcher who had been incarcerated at Indiana's Camp Morton leveled accusations against that prison, making clear for the first time that it was as inhumane as Andersonville. This book details the cover up and denials by prominent Den of Misery: Indiana's Civil War Prison details the cover-ups and denials as well as the cruel realities of the prison camp and chronicles the efforts by Confederate veterans to make known the truth about their experiences. The author includes a full list of prisoners who died at Camp Morton and are buried in a mass grave in Indianapolis.

With America's 250th founding anniversary upcoming, it is opportune to reflect upon the cultural impact and history of America's Bicentennial celebration of 1976. The early 1970s was dominated by economic and political turmoil, and the nation looked to the Bicentennial to provide an outlet for moving past difficult times by defining the American ethos through a celebration of its past. Though the celebration sought to recycle many of the nation's mythologies, both good and bad, it was successful in reinvigorating the country by reminding them of what made America exceptional. Author Lawrence Samuel explores the cultural history of the American Bicentennial and helps us to ponder the very same questions of who we are as a people and a nation, as we look ahead to America at 250.

Wellfleet
9780738549927
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $18.74 Save 25%Pirates? A disappearing island? A brand-new technology that would change the world? It isn't science-fiction, this is the history of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, and its neighbor, Billingsgate Island.
Originally settled by Europeans in the 1650s as Billingsgate, Wellfleet became a town with an important, if overlooked history, located between the "tip'? and the "elbow'? of Cape Cod. Today, the town may be famous for its oysters, but there is so much more to this small town than what may be immediately apparent. In 1717, the pirate "Black Sam'? Bellamy was sailing his ship nearby when it crashed, sending 4 tons of gold and silver, as well as 143 men, to a watery grave-- the shipwreck was discovered in 1984, the first of only two confirmed pirate shipwrecks ever recovered. By the time of the American Revolution, Wellfleet was well-known not just for their oysters, but their success in the whaling industry. As whaling declined in the late 19th century, it wasn't long before the spotlight once again shone on Wellfleet with Guglielmo Marconi built America's first transatlantic radio transmitter on the coastal bluff of South Wellfleet. Perhaps the most interesting story about Wellfleet isn't about Wellfleet at all, but Billingsgate Island. Generations lived there and built homes, wharves, a school, a lighthouse, and even founded a baseball team. By 1922, the sea swallowed this Wellfleet island, leaving nothing but a brick-strewn shoal, visible only at low tide. Sometimes called the "Atlantis of Cape Cod,'? locals can still access the island by boat on the occasions the tide leaves the land exposed, a perfect spot for picnics or shellfishing.

Regular price $12.95 Sale price $9.71 Save 25%The law of universal truth, namely the law of attraction, is explained in Rhonda Byrne's recently published and popular book, The Secret. The idea rests on the principles of visualization. Positive thoughts and beliefs attract positive situations in life. Bill Little adapts these principles and translates them into a language better understood in the realm of Christianity. Christians skeptical about the term visualization are often confused about how it relates to their spiritual lives. Little uses biblical teachings and passages to interpret Byrne's techniques. With the right focus Christians can greatly benefit from these practices and become stronger in their own faith.

Once exclusive to professional bakeries and restaurants, convection ovens are becoming increasingly common in household kitchens. As the popularity of these appliances grows, more and more people are discovering the joys of cooking and baking in a convection oven.

World War I continued with fury in the spring of 1918 as American Yanks endeavored to play the key role in stemming the German tide. Montana’s Marines suffered the bloodiest day in their history as they became “Devil Dogs,” charging through hell on earth at Belleau Wood. Locals in the Wild West Division stormed “over the top” into the Argonne Forest, while nurses, “hello girls,” Navy Yeomanettes and YMCA workers blazed new gender roles. And young Seaman Mike Mansfield, future legendary senator, served on convoy duty against lurking German U-boats.
Award-winning historian Ken Robison illuminates the story of young and vibrant Montanans of all ethnicities as they fought for elusive democracy, at home and abroad, in this world war to end all wars.
