Legendary Locals of the Puyallup Valley

9781467100892

$24.99

More than 10,000 years ago, migrating tribes settled in the J-shaped Puyallup Valley lying beneath the majestic mountain known today as Mount Rainier. Tribal traders from east of the mountains called the western valley tribe generous people, a word that in English sounds like Puyallup. Pioneers found promise in clearing the land, creating the towns of Puyallup, Sumner, and Orting, and donating property for the common good. Agriculture produced hop barons, nationally renowned daffodil bulb growers, and successful berry farmers. Early entrepreneurs spawned multigenerational businesses while doctors, educators, and civic leaders more than fulfilled pioneer dreams. In 1900, a small band of men established an annual fair in Puyallup, which became the Washington State Fair. More recently, benefactors helped to build premier fitness and medical facilities. Citizens from each town continue to participate in community service clubs. Legendary Locals of the Puyallup Valley weaves a story of determined people who have left their mark on this beautiful valley.

Washington Beer

9781467119085

$24.99

Brewing history touches every corner of Washington. When it was a territory, homesteader operations like Colville Brewery helped establish towns. In 1865, Joseph Meeker planted the state's first hops in Steilacoom. Within a few years, that modest crop became a five-hundred-acre empire, and Washington led the nation in hops production by the turn of the century. Enterprising pioneers like Emil Sick and City Brewery's Catherine Stahl galvanized early Pacific Northwest brewing. In 1982, Bert Grant's Yakima Brewing and Malting Company opened the first brewpub in the country since Prohibition. Soon, Seattle's Independent Ale Brewing Company led a statewide craft tap takeover, and today, nearly three hundred breweries and brewpubs call the Evergreen State home. Author Michael F. Rizzo unveils the epic story of brewing in Washington.

Sean Davis

Oregon Wildland Firefighting

9781467138505

$21.99

Over the past century, some of the world’s largest wildland fires have occurred in Oregon. Accidentally set by a disgruntled cook on an English ship, the Great Fire of 1845 displaced multiple tribes and boiled wildlife alive in the Columbia River. The Tillamook Burn started up every 6 years from 1933 to 1951 and incited one of the largest reseeding efforts in the world with 72 million seedlings planted. The Long Draw Fire of 2012, the state’s largest in more than 150 years, started as a small spark and raged into an ocean of flames thousands of acres wide in a matter of hours. Veteran wildland firefighter Sean Davis shares harrowing firsthand accounts that illustrate what it takes to battle an inferno.

Anacortes

9780738571294

$24.99

Located on the north shore of Fidalgo Island in Washington State’s Puget Sound, the town of Anacortes is known as the “New York of the West.”

Founded by railroad surveyor Amos Bowman and named in honor of his wife, Anna Curtis, Fidalgo Island has actually been home to the Samish and Swinomish tribes for thousands of years prior to the 1890s boom and bust. White settlers arriving in the 1850s established farms and eventually wood mills, salmon canneries, and a vital downtown waterfront, transforming Anacortes into the salmon-canning capital of the world by the early 20th century. Japanese and Chinese cannery workers and Croatian and Scandinavian fishermen were among the many immigrants who brought their unique ways to the island. As a port town, Anacortes retained an open and adventuresome spirit, attracting new arrivals and visitors with the stunning natural beauty of the Northwest frontier. Commercial fishermen still ply local waters alongside a thriving maritime industry, whale-watching ecotourism, and a tradition of creative festivity.

Patricia Jollota

Legendary Locals of Vancouver

9781467100014

$24.99

Vancouver was originally laid out as Vancouver City, to distinguish it from the Hudson's Bay's Fort Vancouver. Dr. John Mcloughlin, now known as the Father of Oregon, treated the settlers fairly, and lost his job in return. The Short family, the Hidden family, and other pioneers settled near the fort. The US Army arrived in 1849 and took over the Hudson's Bay properties. Ulysses S. Grant planted potatoes in hopes that he could bring his family here. World War II brought a host of workers to fill positions at the Kaiser Shipyards and the Alcoa plant. Legendary Locals of Vancouver shares the stories of the people, past and present, who have shaped Vancouver's landscape.

Mountain Climbing in Washington State

9781467132992

$24.99

This book contains images of many of the mountains and views that are available to be climbed in Washington State. Washington's mountains have been used for many years as a training ground for major international mountain climbing expeditions. The very first Americans to climb Mount Everest trained on the mountains of Washington State. Many of these scenes have never been seen by the casual hiker or climber, merely because they cover such a large geographic area of the state and are otherwise very remote.

Lopez Island

9780738580302

$24.99

The story of Lopez Island is a story of community. Skilled, brave, generous people like Sampson Chadwick, Mother Brown, Captain Barlow, and Amelia Davis carved a spirited, nurturing community out of seaside wilderness. Homesteaders cleared forests, built farms, grew food, and raised large families, surviving then thriving together. The hamlets of Port Stanley, Richardson, and Lopez emerged, creating hubs with stores, post offices, and schools as well as thriving fishing, canning, and shipping industries. The community fostered education, music, writing, dances, chivarees, baseball, quilting, a birthday club, and grand Fourth of July celebrations. Living self-reliant lives while helping friends, neighbors, and newcomers, Lopezians created a unique community character that abides today.

Sandy

9781467134330

$24.99

Traveling the Barlow Road, 50,000 pioneers rolled their wagon wheels over the site of today's Sandy Historical Museum without stopping. Not until the arrival of Francis Revenue in 1853 did anyone consider the area suitable for homesteading. Building a store and a bridge across the Sandy River, Revenue established the first bit of civilization the pioneers encountered in Oregon. Among the heroes and legends to appear on the slopes of Mount Hood were Elijah Lige Coalman, who climbed the mountain 586 times; brawny loggers, lumbermen, and farmers who tamed the forest and settled the land; Blanche Shelley, the first female mayor in Oregon; and Nettie Connett, who stood on her head on a bar stool and walked on her hands across Main Street.

Seattle's 1962 World's Fair

9781467115124

$24.99

In the late 1950s, Seattle's civic and business leaders were worried about the city losing its dominant position as a trading partner with the lucrative Pacific Rim nations. Interested in showing off all that the city and state had to offer in the hope of gaining new business, their unlikely solution was a world's fair, the first to be held in the United States since 1940. Other cities across the nation also competed for the honor, but Seattle surprised them all with a thoughtful and well-financed plan that would forever increase the world's awareness of the "Emerald City." More than nine million visitors came to enjoy the soaring Space Needle, the futuristic monorail, and the dozens of colorful pavilions at the fair.

Linda Marie Kirk

Myrtle Point and Vicinity

9781467130981

$24.99

The town of Myrtle Point, incorporated in 1887, was platted in a grove of myrtle trees on a point of land overlooking the South Fork of the Coquille River. Ten years after incorporation, Myrtle Point was a thriving commercial hub of 600 people. It had a riverboat landing, two hotels, and streets lined with churches, businesses, houses, and barns. This book begins in 1893, a landmark year when the telephone and the train both arrived in Myrtle Point. It ends in 1950, a time of prosperity for loggers and farmers in southwestern Oregon and for the enterprises in Myrtle Point that served them. Family photographs, many published here for the first time, reveal glimpses of a world where logging was king; the Coos County Fair was the biggest event of the year; and, early on, farm families traveled by horse team and riverboat to shop in a bustling Myrtle Point.

Beverlee Jory Koutny

Woodburn

9780738576060

$24.99

For hundreds of years, French Prairie was the playground and home of the Kalapooya Indians, members of the Bannock Tribe. By the time pioneers started arriving on the Oregon Trail, the Indian population was diminishing due to exposure to diseases brought by earlier settlers. Jesse Settlemier had a vision of a nursery business and a town that could supply its workers, and he purchased property and began clearing it. Ultimately, the development of a railroad, along with fertile soil, hardy pioneers, an ideal climate, and a favorable location (between the large cities of Salem and Portland) produced the formula for a thriving city.

Seattle Chocolatiers

9781467134842

$24.99

On the heels of the coffee bean, Seattle is embracing the cocoa bean. There is a long chocolate history here, from the legendary melt-in-your-mouth Frango Mint originally found at the Frederick & Nelson department store to Dilettante's pioneering espresso mocha drinks and truffles and Fran's Chocolates. They paved the way for today's innovative chocolatiers. Seattle's chocolatiers are inventive and provocative, creating bold flavors and colors. They are responding to changing palates, and even changing dietary needs, while remaining dedicated to social justice, sustainability, and stewardship of the land and the people. Home to the nation's first bean-to-bar chocolate factory, Seattle is forever impacting the chocolate industry, educating people on chocolate quality and global responsibility.

Willamette Valley Wineries

9781467126298

$24.99

Despite its short, 50-year history, Oregon's Willamette Valley was named Wine Region of the Year in 2016 by Wine Enthusiast, besting Champagne, France; Crete, Greece; and Sonoma, California. Credit for the award can be traced to the pioneer winemakers, a small group of dreamers who—through grit and determination—succeeded in growing grapes where it was considered impossible. Wine has been made in Oregon since the mid-1800s, but it was not until 1965 that winemaking began in earnest in the region. That year, David and Diana Lett planted 3,000 pinot noir vines on a carefully selected south-facing slope. Others joined the adventure, and through collaboration and a passion for making the best wine possible, the Willamette Valley's wine industry was born. This book presents a history of the challenges, hardships, and ultimate success of Willamette Valley wineries.

Anderson Island

9780738548548

$24.99

Named for Alexander Caulfield Anderson, the chief trader for the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Nisqually, Anderson Island has an early history of brick making, logging, farming, and fishing. Johnson's Landing, on the north end of the island, was the site where mosquito fleet steamships could refuel and purchase lumber for delivery as far south as San Francisco. The first permanent settlers on the island arrived from Denmark in the early 1870s, with others of Scandinavian descent coming shortly thereafter. The southernmost island in Washington State's Puget Sound, accessible only by boat or ferry from Steilacoom, Anderson Island boasts two freshwater lakes, two marinas, and a golf course. Bucolic Anderson Island received national press coverage in 2005 when the flower fairy anonymously left floral bouquets on doorsteps, a practice that continues to this day.

Lakewood Theatre Company

9781467108362

$23.99

Discover through historic photographs how a little theater that traveled from pillar to post with costumes, props, and flats became the Lakewood Theatre Company at Lakewood Center for the Arts.

In 1952, a small group gathered at the home of Dorothy Peetz in Lake Oswego, Oregon, and thought it would be fun for the community to have a little theater. They began to organize what was then known as the Oswego Players. Today, the nonprofit theater attracts 40,000 patrons annually. Lakewood Center for the Arts, home of the city’s annual Festival of the Arts, coordinates a large multi-exhibit arts education event to inspire and awe 25,000 visitors every year. Generations of people have made the Lakewood Center for the Arts a part of their daily lives through volunteerism or by attending classes, everything from ancestry to Zumba. Young actors that performed on Lakewood Theatre Company’s stage later returned to direct their own productions.

Jen Avila-Langford created visual presentations for the Lakewood Theatre Company. In an attempt to make the workshops more engaging, she delved into Lakewood’s archives and local history. Photographs, never before published, of the theater founders, the original playwrights, and the classics are brought to light from 70 years of archives.

Ski Jumping in Washington State

9781467147828

$23.99

"Wherever two or three Norwegians gathered together, they constructed a jump and held competitions.'? -Harold "Cork'? Anson

Ski jumping, once Washington's most popular winter sport, was introduced by Norwegian immigrants in the early twentieth century. It began at Spokane's Browne's Mountain and Seattle's Queen Anne Hill, then moved to midsummer tournaments on Mount Rainier in 1917 and expanded statewide as new ski clubs formed. Washington tournaments attracted the world's best jumpers--Birger and Sigurd Ruud, Alf Engen, Sigurd Ulland and Reidar Andersen, among others. In 1941, Torger Tokle set two national distance records here in just three weeks. Regional ski areas hosted national and international championships as well as Olympic tryouts, entertaining spectators until Leavenworth's last tournament in 1978.

Lawyer, historian and award-winning author John W. Lundin recreates the excitement of this nearly forgotten ski jumping heritage.

Portland's Maritime History

9781467130844

$24.99

Portland is not only the site of numerous marine terminals along the Willamette and Columbia Rivers but also home to much of our American maritime history. Portland shipbuilding started in 1840 with construction of the schooner Star of Oregon. Over 100 years later, three Portland shipyards would build 621 ships for the war effort. Both before and after World War II, several steel and iron companies used the harbors in Portland for their manufacturing. Aside from production, Portland ships over 13 million tons of cargo every year and is the biggest shipper of wheat in the United States. The city displays this maritime history along its beautiful rivers.

Bill Cotter

Spokane's Expo '74

9781467124638

$24.99

In the late 1960s, Spokane's civic leaders were desperately looking for a way to revitalize a large section of downtown, especially a motley collection of little-used railroad lines and polluted industrial sites along the Spokane River. Their solution was to use the area for Expo '74, which was billed as the first ecologically themed world's fair. Critics predicted the project was sure to fail, as Spokane was the smallest city to ever host a world's fair, but history proved them wrong. From the minute the gates opened on May 4, 1974, the crowds loved the fair. Hosting 5.4 million visitors, with participation from several major companies and countries, Expo '74 was a success. As planned, it launched a rebirth along the river that left a permanent legacy, the popular Riverfront Park.

Scott Stursa

Distilled in Oregon

9781467137720

$24.99

Early Oregon fur traders concocted a type of distilled beverage known as Blue Ruin, used in commerce with local Native Americans. Drawn by the abundant summer harvests of the Willamette Valley, distillers put down roots in the nineteenth century. Because of Oregon's early sunset on legal liquor production in 1916—four years before national Prohibition—hundreds of illicit stills popped up across the state. Residents of Portland remained well supplied, thanks to the infamous efforts of Mayor George Baker. The failed national experiment ended in 1933, and Hood River Distillers resurrected the sensible enterprise of turning surplus fruit into brandy in 1934. Thanks in part to the renowned Clear Creek Distillery triggering a craft distilling movement in 1985, the state now boasts seventy distilleries and counting. Author Scott Stursa leads a journey through the history of distilling in the Beaver State.

Seattle's Historic Houses of Worship

9781467126380

$24.99

As Seattle grew in the mid-1800s, the increase in families settling in the area created a need for churches. Seattle First Church was established in 1853 and by 1901 Seattle had 112 churches; today, there are less than 20 of these churches still in existence. Seattle's Historic Houses of Worship explores many of these churches, examining how they have survived over 100 years, while still going strong today. Churches have guided the Seattle community through the great Seattle fire, world wars, internment camps, the assassination of a president, and the protests of the civil rights era.

Seattle Totems

9781467133609

$24.99

Before major-league professional sports came to the Northwest, Seattle had a rich minor-league sports history. In the winter, Saturday afternoons were for college football, but the nights were for hockey. From the late 1950s through the mid-1970s, hockey could only mean one thing—the Seattle Totems. Led by Guyle Fielder, the Totems won three Western Hockey League (WHL) championships as they skated and fought against their rivals. Grab a seat and get ready to learn about Seattle's hockey history from the Seattle Metropolitans, the first American team to win the Stanley Cup, through the Totems as they battle their WHL foes and even the Russian National Team in pursuit of hockey glory.

Karen Murray

Quincy Valley

9780738581613

$24.99

The Quincy Valley is a unique place with a distinct environment. In the beginning, not even the local Columbia River tribes could find a use for the sagebrush desert, home to jackrabbits, coyotes, and rattlesnakes, but by 1910, immigrants from more than 20 nations called it home. Today the technology of the 21st century knocks on its door. From the early days of dry-land farming, to the abundant orchards and crops nourished by the Grand Coulee Dam, to the data-server farms of major Internet companies, the Quincy Valley provides food and information to the entire world. It is a community of people whose faith, families, and farms have provided physical sustenance and prosperity to its descendants. Their influence extends far and wide as they have spread across the world, serving in both military and civilian careers.

Roberta R. Newland

The Cle Elum Fire of 1918

9781467128780

$24.99

Cle Elum, Washington, was founded in 1883 by Walter Reed and Thomas Gamble. The name, from Tle-el-Lum, is a rendering of the local Native American phrase for swift water. Nestled in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Cle Elum grew as a railroad town, transporting lumber and coal, both from nearby Roslyn and later from Cle Elum itself. In 1891, it survived its first fire. In 1918, after reaching its population high of over 2,700 residents, a catastrophic fire broke out on a windy June day. Two-thirds of the townspeople were left homeless, and the majority of the town was destroyed. Cle Elum rose again from the ashes, thanks to the will of its citizens and help from all around the Pacific Northwest.

Ghosts of Leavenworth and the Cascade Foothills

9781625858542

$21.99 $17.59 Save 20%

The spirits of the early pioneers still roam the streets of Leavenworth and lurk in the lengthening shadows of the surrounding hills. Chas Gordon's murder sits unsolved after a century of mystery, as does the location of the lost Ingalls gold. Muffled sobs mark out the Thorp Cemetery, while a ghostly hand coaxes a soft tune from the piano in the lobby of the Tumwater Inn. Saloon shootings and railroad tragedies left their own legacy of restless souls. Author Deborah Cuyle reveals the fascinating history behind the ghost stories from this corner of the Cascade Mountains.

Jon Abernathy

Bend Beer

9781626194670

$21.99

With more breweries per capita than any other Oregon city, Bend is a beer mecca. Prior to Prohibition, the state had a burgeoning brewing industry and plenty of saloons to cater to the needs of the hardy frontiersmen who settled Central Oregon. The teetotaling '20s brought all that to a screeching halt. Fifty years later, the arrival of pioneers like Deschutes Brewery and Bend Brewing Company breathed new life into Bend's beer and brought about the booming industry for which the area is known today. Author and The Brew Site creator Jon Abernathy traces Bend and Central Oregon's hoppy history from early settlement to the present day, sharing the stories behind its most famous breweries and the communities that have fostered the industry.

Marc Hinton

Bob Robinson

Golf in Oregon

9781609496487

$19.99

In his lengthy career as an Oregon sportswriter (thirty seven years with The Oregonian), Bob Robinson covered a variety of regional and national golf events. In this collection, he takes a look back at some of the significant stories from his career, including coverage of Tiger's US Amateur win in Portland, Casey Martin's legal battle with the PGA, and Peter Jacobsen's top five finish in the 1983 PGA Championship. The book consists of twenty three essays relating memorable golf moments that occurred in Oregon or featured Oregon golfers. In each essay, Robinson seasons his initial coverage as a sports writer with follow up interviews, updated information, and his reflections on past events.

Alexander B. Craghead

Railway Palaces of Portland, Oregon

9781626193093

$24.99

In 1883, railroad financier Henry Villard brought Portland and the Pacific Northwest their first transcontinental railroad. Earning a reputation for boldness on Wall Street, the war correspondent turned entrepreneur set out to establish Portland as a bourgeoning metropolis. To realize his vision, he hired architects McKim, Mead & White to design a massive passenger station and a first-class hotel. Despite financial panics, lost fortunes and stalled construction, the Portland Hotel opened in 1890 and remained the social heart of the city for sixty years. While the original station was never built, Villard returned as a pivotal benefactor of Union Station, saving its iconic clock tower in the process. Author Alexander Benjamin Craghead tells the story of this Gilded Age patron and the architecture that helped shape the city's identity.

Richard M. Thompson

Slabtown Streetcars

9781467133555

$24.99

No area of Portland, Oregon, played a more important role in street railway history than Northwest Portland and the neighborhood known as Slabtown. In 1872, the city's first streetcars passed close to Slabtown as they headed for a terminus in the North End. Slabtown was also home to the first streetcar manufacturing factory on the West Coast. In fact, until locally built streetcars began to be replaced by trolleys from large national builders in the 1910s, more than half of all rolling stock was manufactured in shops located at opposite ends of Northwest Twenty-third Avenue. All streetcars operating on the west side of the Willamette River, including those used on the seven lines that served Northwest Portland, were stored in Slabtown. When the end finally came in 1950, Slabtown residents were riding two of the last three city lines.

Bob Robinson

Oregon Sports Stories

9781626191570

$21.99

Oregon has its share of playmakers, dramatic finishes and legendary coaches. With humor and insight, Oregon native and longtime sportswriter Bob Robinson relates highlights from six decades of coverage throughout the state. Blazermania overruns the Rose City as the Trail Blazers take down the favored Philadelphia 76ers in 1977. Oregon State's Orange Express, coached by Ralph Miller, captivates the state in 1981 before a shocking stumble in the NCAA playoffs. University of Oregon's Bill Dellinger kickstarts the school's distance-running tradition with a stunning win in 1954. In the 1970s, Mouse Davis performs coaching magic at Portland State with his Run and Shoot football offense. In these twenty essays, Robinson offers a unique, behind-the-scenes account of some of Oregon's greatest sports moments and game-changing personalities.

Karen May

Tacoma's North Slope

9780738575285

$24.99

Listed on the local Tacoma Register, the Washington Heritage Register, and the National Register of Historic Places, the North Slope is the largest residential historic district in Washington. Perched atop Job Carr's Hill, it is a trapezoid with streets at an angle, or sloped, to the grid designed by city planners. The bulk of the neighborhood was built on a 166-acre farm belonging to the Carr family. Purchased in the 1860s from the federal government, it was sold in the 1880s for residential development. The first homes in the North Slope were built from 1888 to 1893 for tycoons, bankers, and railroad men. Renowned residents included Gov. Ernest Lister, John Q. and Virginia Mason, and Bing Crosby, who was born in the North Slope and baptized at St. Patrick's Church.

Alfred D. Brown

Seattle and the Orient

9780738594835

$21.99

By way of introduction the writer desires to state that Seattle and the Orient is published to act as an opening wedge into a country up to this time very little known to people residing upon Puget Sound. It is for the purpose of introducing ourselves to the people doing business in Siberia, China, Japan, the China Archipelago, the Philippines and Hawaii, and to eventually open a way by which closer trade relations may be promoted, that this book has been published. The subjects treated are in no instance overdrawn, but are secured by direct contact with the people interested, and are plain matter of fact statements of affairs as they exist in Seattle and in Western Washington. The illustrations shown are the best procurable, and will afford the reader a fair idea of what can be found in the metropolis of America's great Mediterranean. Such a showing as the following pages make cannot help but impress even the most casual observer that Seattle has a future before it of very great magnitude. Unquestionably it is destined to become the largest city upon the Pacific Coast. It has every material advantage to make it so; it has almost every imaginable resource upon which to draw for support; it is the center of one of the greatest lumbering sections in the world; it ‘has inexhaustible coal mines; it is the central point from which the gold fields of Alaska and the British Northwest Territory are reached; it is practically the center of all the mineral wealth of the Northwest; and it is moreover the natural geographical entrepot for the great Oriental markets, a fact which in time will make it the greatest shipping port in the United States. An attempt has been made to enumerate its varied resources in succeeding pages, and a story has been told which will prove both interesting and instructive. It has been the aim of the writer to take up the industrial side of Seattle and portray a condition as near the actual as possible.

Tacoma's Parks

9780738548968

$24.99

When civic benefactor Clinton P. Ferry donated a graceful, elliptically shaped plot of land in 1883 for the first park in Tacoma, he hoped his adopted hometown would do him proud and become a veritable city of parks. The young community did not disappoint. Landmarks such as Wright Park, Lincoln Park, and Point Defiance Park graced the landscape by 1900, a testament to Tacoma's appreciation for beauty, conservation, and recreation, which continues to this day. In 1907, residents voted to establish the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma, Washington's first independent parks municipality, to act as steward of these civic treasures. A century later, Metro Parks Tacoma embraces some 57 parks covering 2,700 acres, as well as swimming pools, sports complexes, community centers, and recreational programs for all ages.

The Mediterranean-style Muckenthaler villa was first a family home and is now a cultural center for the arts. Built in 1924, the 18-room villa is situated on 8.5 acres atop a Fullerton hill that was selected for its picturesque views of orchards to the south. Walter Muckenthaler and his wife, the former Adella Kraemer, lived there for more than 30 years, where they entertained friends, family, and dignitaries in landscaped gardens, bred rare birds, and enjoyed life as respected community members in a growing Orange County town. In 1965, seven years after Walter's passing, Harold Muckenthaler, the couple's only son, wished to have his childhood home utilized as a cultural center for the public and donated the house and property to the city of Fullerton. In 1999, the Muckenthaler villa received designation by the National Register of Historic Places. Today, tens of thousands of annual visitors enjoy the distinctive architecture, gardens, and grounds of the Muckenthaler Cultural Center, as well as unique art exhibitions, theater, music, dance, storytelling, classes, and seasonal festivals.

Texas Hill Country Wineries

9781467132732

$24.99

The Texas Hill Country wineries have roots as old as any around. Texas grapes grow in soils made from ancient sea deposits, similar to the grape-growing regions of Europe. Texas wine culture arrived in the 1600s with Spanish missionaries who settled and planted vineyards in El Paso del Norte. The 1800s brought German and Italian immigrant farmers to Texas; they considered wine a staple of everyday life. In what is now America's No. 5 wine-producing state, the Texas Hill Country was named by Wine Enthusiast magazine to its 2014 list of best international wine destinations. It may surprise some, but not the wine aficionados who have visited the Texas Hill Country's 50 or more wineries, that wine-and-culinary tourism is currently the Texas Hill Country's fastest growing sector. This book is your guide to the Texas Hill Country winery experience. It is time to sip and savor Texas for yourself.

Waxahachie

9780738523897

$24.99

The people of Waxahachie, Texas, have always been at the heart of a thriving community that was once the largest cotton-producing county in the nation. As county seat, Waxahachie burgeoned into a bustling center for business and education and carved out a unique niche in the growing landscape. But its citizens overcame significant obstacles as well, facing such challenges as a massive slave revolt during the Civil War and the economic bust of the 1930s. Reflecting both the glory and hardship of these struggles, Waxahachie today stands as a testament to Southern determination and how a town came to be defined by a crop on which America still relies-cotton.

Always with an eye on their future, the people of Waxahachie, in 1912, supported the development of an interurban electric railway system linking them to Dallas and Waco. Each July between 1900 and 1930, Texans from all over the state came to Waxahachie by covered wagon, on horseback, and later by automobile to participate in the national Chautauqua phenomenon and hear such great orators as William Jennings Bryan and Will Rogers. Waxahachie's Chautauqua Auditorium, still in use today, is one of the few national survivors of this educational movement. This tradition of community and culture survives to the present day in such events as the Scarborough Fair, the National Polka Festival, and the Gingerbread Trail of Homes. In this new historical account, Waxahachie, Texas: Where Cotton Reigned King, the town springs to life in a blend of more than 100 vintage photographs and stories that chronicle the perseverance and love of a people for their town.

Eagle Island

9781467125628

$24.99

Elizabeth O'Connell and Stephen Harding capture the magic of Eagle Island through years of research, interviews, and the collection of photographs and visual images by the Friends of Peary's Eagle Island (FOPEI).

Eagle Island, located off the coast of Harpswell, Maine, is far enough into Casco Bay to offer isolation but close enough to capture the fascination of a young man. Its rocky spine meets the open Atlantic in rugged cliffs with the strength to transform the momentum of ocean swells into plumes of brilliant spray. The interior, covered with a diversity of flora, presents a gentle welcoming to seabirds and the occasional fauna. Robert E. Peary, a Bowdoin College graduate, bought the island and, using local craftsmen, built a cottage for his family to use as their summer home. After his discovery of the North Pole in 1909 with its celebration and controversy, Eagle Island became the family retreat, a refuge from the public scrutiny attendant an international hero. This is the story of three generations of the Peary family and their Eagle Island home. Peary's Promised Land, now a State of Maine Historic Site and museum, has become a magical place for countless visitors, resulting in its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 2014.

Nestled in the southwest corner of Vermont, Bennington is rich in history and natural beauty. On August 16, 1777, the Green Mountain Boys and militia from surrounding states defeated British troops at the Battle of Bennington. When manufacturing declined in the early 1900s, the town reinvented itself as a tourist destination. Postcards promoting local scenery, quaint covered bridges, bustling downtown streets, modern amenities, and significant historic sites explained the town's importance to travelers and fostered local pride.

Ludlow

9780738502243

$24.99

Incorporated on February 28, 1774, Ludlow, Massachusetts, was originally a part of Springfield. The origin of the name remains a mystery, though the most probable explanation is that it was named after Roger Ludlow, an early prominent New England citizen who played a great part in building up the town and taking care of its citizens. The Ludlow Manufacturing Company, formed around 1900 by Charles T. Hubbard, helped shape the town by providing housing, a library, schools, playgrounds, and even a clubhouse for the diverse community. Ludlow was home to many sawmills and gristmills, utilizing the power from the several sources of water nearby, including the Chicopee River, Broad Brook, Higher Brook, and Stony Brook. The town is most noted, however, for its factory mills and production of jute yarns, twine, and webbing. Less well known was the glass-making business that was prevalent in the early 1800s. John Sikes manufactured glass bottles and other glassware and the Ludlow Manufacturing Company glass works operated for only a short time before closing in the depression years following the War of 1812. Today, Ludlow remains a culturally diverse community made up of Portuguese, Polish, French, and Irish residents, just to name a few.

Bethlehem

9780738565163

$24.99

Settled in 1734, Bethlehem is a typical Litchfield hill town and retains much of its rural charm. Around its green are an old post tavern at the Woodward House, two historic churches, and the Bellamy-Ferriday House and Garden. Rev. Joseph Bellamy came to Bethlehem in 1738 and stayed to establish the first theological school in the country, educating Aaron Burr, James Morris, and later John C. Calhoun. In 1938, postmaster Earl Johnson designed a rubber stamp to adorn cards sent from the post office attached to his family's general store. This first cachet became an annual project and established Bethlehem as the Christmas town. In 1946, two Benedictine nuns came to stay with artist Lauren Ford while establishing the Abbey of Regina Laudis in a factory donated by local businessman Robert Leather. Every September for the last 85 years, the Bethlehem Fair has welcomed more than 60,000 people to apple pies and horse draws at its scenic fairgrounds.

Hamden Firefighting

9781467127615

$24.99

Incorporated in 1786, the town of Hamden covers nearly 33 square miles immediately north of New Haven, Connecticut. Despite significant industrial growth in the early 19th century and several devastating fires, Hamden had no organized firefighting forces until its first volunteer fire company was organized in 1896. By 1925, the handful of independent volunteer fire companies that followed became the Hamden Fire Department. A predominantly volunteer force before World War II, the department grew to 55 career members by 1950 and to 124 by the mid-1980s. The ascendency of emergency medical services and, more recently, a concern for homeland security have greatly expanded the department's role in public safety. Although 1990s municipal austerity measures reduced department size by 20 percent, with a population today exceeding 60,000, fire department responses have increased to more than 10,000 calls annually, of which 74 percent are for EMS.

Each thrived as a separate center with its own businesses, schools, and colorful residents. Together they share their stories and memories to create the complete history of Townsend. New Hampshire Old Home Celebrations

9780738565293

$24.99

In 1899, when many New Hampshire residents were moving to cities and other parts of the nation, Frank Rollins, soon to become governor of New Hampshire, delivered a proposal to hold an annual event he dubbed Old Home Week. Similar in form to many of the family and town picnics already a tradition throughout New Hampshire, Old Home Week was designed as an open invitation to all the former residents of the Granite State to return to the homes of their youth. In addition to the ballgames, picnics, parades, and bonfires that were held during the third week of August, the celebrations resulted in municipal improvements across the state. Old homesteads were refurbished as summer homes, and libraries and monuments sprung up throughout the region as residents returned, creating a movement toward a renewed pride in the community.

Steamboats to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket

9781467122825

$24.99

The islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, off the Cape Cod coast of Massachusetts, were first inhabited by members of the Wampanoag tribe. English settlements were established in the mid-1600s. As the populations and commerce grew, so did the need for reliable transportation. The islands were first served by privately owned sailing vessels, but things began to change with the introduction of marine steam power. In 1818, the little steamer Eagle was the first to cross Nantucket Sound. Although she only remained in these waters for three months, she began what was to become a tradition of steamboat travel to the islands that lasted for 170 years. The images in this volume include well-known steamers with familiar names like Nobska, Naushon, Gay Head, and Uncatena, as well as many others.

$24.99

There are two dozen places in the United States named Plainfield, but Plainfield, Connecticut, was the first. When it was incorporated in 1699, Colonial governor Fitz-John Winthrop named the town for its rich, fertile fields along the Quinebaug River. During the 1700s, the town was transformed from Native American country to a farming community populated by English settlers. In the 1800s, textile mills were built along the Moosup and Quinebaug Rivers, and Plainfield became an industrial town attracting workers from all over New England, Canada, and Europe. Today the textile industry is gone, and the surviving mills have been converted to other uses. Located in the northeastern part of the state, Plainfield is in the heart of the breathtaking Quinebaug-Shetucket National Heritage Corridor.

Malden

$24.99

By the turn of the 20th century, Malden had become a fairly large city and was home to wealthy families, immigrants, and workers. Farms disappeared as factories and businesses of all types and sizes grew. Elisha Converse, the city's first mayor and founder of the Boston Rubber Shoe Company, left his mark on Malden by funding a public library and hospital and designating land for development of Pine Banks Park. A vibrant downtown emerged at the intersection of two colonial roads. It became a regional center of shopping and commerce as well as a hub for transportation by train, trolley, or automobile. The early 1900s were marked by the construction of grand residences, business buildings, numerous parks and churches, and many schools. However, by mid-century, many of these institutions had undergone great change, if they had not entirely disappeared.

$24.99

Heywood Hospital, an independent, 153-bed, nonprofit community hospital located in north central Massachusetts, has served the residents of the Greater Gardner area for over 100 years. A gift to the community, its birth in 1907 was thanks to the vision and generosity of the prominent Heywood family. Upon his death, his wife and daughter provided the funds needed for the land and hospital building, as well as an endowment for its operation. Situated upon a hill overlooking Crystal Lake to the west and the Heywood family farm to the north and east, the Henry Heywood Memorial Hospital was established. A visual history reflecting the deep connection between a community hospital and its residents, Heywood Hospital celebrates the hospital as a benefactor and major employer firmly entrenched in a highly supportive community.

Worcester State University

9781467128445

$24.99

Founded in 1874 as Massachusetts's fifth normal school, Worcester State University has changed significantly while evolving from a teacher training school to a highly regarded public university in New England's second-largest city. Normal schools prepared teachers to enter classrooms through a curriculum of traditional coursework and innovative apprentice teaching. By 1932, when the normal school moved from its downtown location to the city's western edge, its name was changed to Worcester State Teachers College, and although it still stressed teacher preparation, the school began expanding its academic program and growing its campus. By 1963, it became Worcester State College, denoting the shift from a strictly teacher training school to a liberal arts and sciences college. New and unique programs proliferated, and graduate education increased student options. By 2010, Worcester State, like all Massachusetts state colleges, became a university, again signifying how much it had evolved in less than a half century. As Worcester State University approaches its 150th anniversary, this book illustrates some of the major changes in the institution's history.

The Lakes Region draws them—or grows them—all, because it has it all.

Legendary Locals of Bangor

9781467100731

$24.99

Since its settlement in 1769, Bangor's greatest resource has been its people. Long before 1834, when the town on the Penobscot became a city, future legends were born who transformed it into a world-class community. Hannibal Hamlin served as Abraham Lincoln's first vice president. Timber tycoon Sam Hersey financed urban development while less affluent folk such as Molly Molasses also made their mark. When philanthropists Stephen and Tabitha King are not writing best-selling novels, they are spreading their wealth throughout the community. Bangor's melting pot includes the Italian Baldacci family and the Jewish baker Reuben Cohen, who, with his wife Clara, raised their son Bill, a US senator and defense secretary. More infamous but equally legendary is brothel keeper Fanny Jones. Paul Bunyan earned a statue on Main Street. Airport troop greeters Kay Lebowitz and Bill Knight round out the list of notables. They are all jewels in Bangor's crown, and each in their own way is a bona fide legend.

Over the years, many notable residents emerged, including Judge Jedediah Foster, who assisted in drafting the Massachusetts Constitution, and famous suffragist Lucy Stone. Brothers Daniel and Ebenezer Merriam established a printing house and bookstore in West Parish Brookfield. Today, residents and visitors enjoy West Brookfield's most popular attractions: the Rock House Reservation features 196 acres of boulders and stone outcrops and the 315-acre Lake Wickaboag is the scene of winter and summer activities, from icehouses to a nationally recognized water-ski club. The Quaboag Historical Society was founded in 1895 and 120 years later is still a vital part of the community.

Auburn

$24.99

Take a fascinating journey through the history of Auburn, Maine with more than 200 vintage photographs and anecdotes from the locals who experienced it.

According to local lore, Auburn's name comes from Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain, a line from Oliver Goldsmith's poem, The Deserted Village.

The first settlers were drawn to the Auburn area by the remarkable falls, lakes, and streams, which provided power for early shoe and textile manufacturers as well as opportunities for recreation. Visitors were also attracted by the tremendous natural resources of Sweet Auburn and tourism boomed in the nineteenth century, with people from away flocking to the area to enjoy cruises on Lake Auburn and to partake of spring waters and tonics.

As Auburn grew and changed, photographers began to preserve these developments on film. For the past 130 years, they have recorded the daily lives of the people of Auburn: their workplaces, schools, and houses; their modes of dress and moments of leisure; and the celebrations and disasters that have brought the people of Auburn together.

More than two hundred images of Auburn, many of which are from the archives of the Androscoggin Historical Society, have been woven with informative text to create this remarkable visual history. Allow the images to lead you back into the past; it is a journey worth making, and one that you will never forget.

Trumbull Historical Society

Trumbull Revisited

9781467122405

$24.99

Incorporated in 1797, Trumbull, Connecticut, developed from a collection of farms and settlements in the area north of Stratford. Trumbull's neighborhoods reflect the varied identities of these early settlements. The Nichols area features homes dating as far back as the establishment of the Farm Highway, which was laid out in 1696 and remains the third-oldest thoroughfare in the state. In the now-forested Pequonnock Valley, a 19th-century rail bed ambles past the foundations of wool mills, paper mills, and gristmills that served the community through the 1800s. That same rail line carried thousands of fun seekers to the picnic pavilions, toboggan slide, and other attractions of Parlor Rock Amusement Park in the late 1800s. Just to the west of the valley, a small, surviving triangle of the Long Hill Green marks an area that once buzzed with the production of shirts, cigars, and carriages. Today, Trumbull continues to rediscover itself and frequently receives accolades as one of the state's most desirable communities in which to live and raise a family.

Centerville

9780738508528

$24.99

At the Cape Cod celebration of 1839, a Harvard professor stated, The duck does not take to water with a surer instinct than the Barnstable boy . . . It is but bound from the mother's lap to the masthead. These prophetic comments were realized most profoundly in Centerville, which originally derived its strength from a strong maritime economy. One of seven villages in the town of Barnstable on Cape Cod, Centerville has a history that is tied in with much of New England. Yet, it remains highly unique, as it was shaped by entrepreneurs and rugged individualists, who weathered not only dramatic economic and cultural changes but also natural disasters.

Centerville will guide you through the village's picturesque winding rivers, salt marshes, and canopied dirt roads, where you will discover the Barracks, the well-known home of Civil War veteran A.D. Ayling. You will explore the gardens that Frederick Law Olmstead designed for Fernbrook, the church where Caroline Kennedy was married, and the site of the village's legendary speakeasy. Centerville will introduce you to James Delap Kelley, one of one hundred five sea captains who lived in Centerville; renowned composer Amy Beach; and sea captain Russell Marston, who left the coastal trade to become a famed Boston restaurateur.

Willington

9781467121071

$24.99

Willington, incorporated in 1727, is located in Connecticut's northeast corner, providing easy access to Hartford, Connecticut, and Boston, Massachusetts. With steep hills and mineral-laden soil, Willington proved to be a challenging terrain for early farmers trying to grow crops. Instead, they came to rely on a variety of animals, which they sold in markets as far away as New York City. Although the area was rural in nature, button, thread, and glass industries all existed in Willington; residents claim Willington as the place where America's first spool of thread was made. Today, businesses include art galleries, gift shops, and independent restaurants. Through photographs, Willington captures how a small community that once had 11 one-room schoolhouses has managed to grow into a modern community with two schools for students from kindergarten through eighth grade all while maintaining elements of its original historic charm. This charm can be seen in the form of 18th- and 19th-century homes that dot Willington's quintessential country roads.

Burlington

9780738509051

$24.99

Located on the Farmington River, Burlington is a place of natural beauty, with five mountains and valleys filled with brooks, forests, and stone walls. Most of the area's earliest settlers came from England to Hartford and then followed the river, with its fertile banks and meadowlands, into the West Woods or Great Forest, as Burlington was known at the time. The town was incorporated in 1745 and was named Burlington in 1806.

Burlington shows the faces of earlier generations of the same families who live in these hills and valleys today. It depicts the homes, barns, orchards, fields, schoolhouses, and mills when they were thriving with life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book captures the tenor of everyday situations as well as the drama of the Blizzard of 1888 and the flood of 1955.

Kingston

9780738509389

$24.99

By the time it incorporated as an independent town in 1726, Kingston had, for a century, been the prestigious North Precinct of the Plymouth Colony, where Pilgrim leaders such as Gov. William Bradford and Dr. Samuel Fuller established their farms and second homes. Residents were granted authority by the Massachusetts General Court in 1717 to be set off from Plymouth and, in that year, Maj. John Bradford, grandson of the governor, gave the new precinct fourteen acres of what is now centralKingston.

Kingston documents the rich and varied cultural, social, and commercial histories of the town and its inhabitants through the sharing of a remarkable legacy of historical and topographical photographic images. Within these pages, you will see how early Kingston prospered because of the productive lands of the Jones River and its tributaries, how iron ore was mined in the town's bogs, and how some three hundred vessels were built in the Jones River yards in the nineteenth century. In Kingston, you also will learn of the Old Colony Railroad, which came to town in 1845, and of the railroad's first two presidents, local residents Col. John Sever and Alexander Holmes.

Ashby Historical Society

Ashby

9781467123716

$24.99

Ashby is located in the hills of central Massachusetts, along the New Hampshire border. The town was incorporated in 1767, initially growing as an agricultural community before water-powered mills emerged along its streams. In 1840, the population began 50 years of decline as people sought more profitable work in larger cities and free land in the western United States. Perhaps due to this decline, the center of town is preserved much as it was in 1840, boasting all its original buildings still in place. Ashby saw a century of renewed growth starting in 1880, when Bostonians arrived during the summer to escape the heat and unhealthy city air. A number of businesses, including inns and tearooms, catered to these wealthy visitors. With the arrival of the automobile, residents gained access to jobs in the surrounding mill towns. It was during this time that the last of Ashby's many mills closed, the first public library was built, and one-room classrooms were combined to become a central town school. Today, one can still stand on the town common in front of the 1809 meetinghouse and look over an area that has undergone little change in the past 170 years.

Abington

9780738536071

$24.99

Once known to native inhabitants as Manamooskeagin, or the land of many beavers, Abington became an important manufacturing and financial center in Plymouth County by the early twentieth century. Postcard photographers and publishers caught every stage of the community's growth and broadcast it to the world through images of workmen at shoe factories, parades celebrating the town's 1912 bicentennial, and the dedication of the Island Grove Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a nineteenth-century gathering site for abolitionists that is today one of America's newest districts in the National Register of Historic Places. Abington captures the nostalgia of this town during the postcard era.

Legendary Locals of Wayland

9781467101912

$24.99

Wayland's historic district is dominated by the 1815 First Parish Church, designed and built by Andrews Palmer of Newburyport, who adapted an Asher Benjamin design. The Rev. Edmund Sears served as minister for 17 years and wrote It Came Upon the Midnight Clear for a First Parish Sunday school celebration in 1849. Wealthy Bostonians soon established summer homes in town. Willard Austin Bullard purchased the residence beside the church and christened it Kirkside, and William Power Perkins purchased Mainstone Farm and established the first Guernsey cow farm in the state. By the mid- to late 1800s, Cochituate Village was dominated by a well-established shoe industry and stately Victorian homes lined the streets. A little more than a century later, the town was preparing for an influx of folks from the city. Howard Russell and Allen Benjamin created an official town map, designating streets, and delineating the established uses for the town's 15.2 square miles. Thanks to the vision and hard work of these men and others like them, the town still retains a semblance of its rural atmosphere with almost 3,000 acres of permanently protected open space.

Tufts Medical Center

9781467133876

$24.99

The story of Tufts Medical Center and the Floating Hospital for Children encompasses the history of medicine in Boston. It was founded in 1796 as the Boston Dispensary, where district physicians provided free medical care to the poor through annual subscriptions from wealthy Boston families, including such luminaries as Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Fueled by a huge influx of immigrants at the turn of the 20th century, the city of Boston rapidly expanded and diversified. So too did the hospital, whose growth included the addition of evening clinics to serve the working poor. The Floating Hospital for Children started in 1894 as a ship outfitted as a hospital to take the city's sick children out on Boston Harbor to receive the benefits of fresh ocean air and the attention of a volunteer medical staff. In the 1930s, it merged with the Boston Dispensary and the Pratt Diagnostic Clinic along with Tufts University's Medical School to form the nucleus of today's Tufts Medical Center, a national leader in health care, teaching, and research.
