Vancouver's Expo '86

$24.99

To mark the 100th anniversary of the city's founding and the arrival of the first trans-Canada train, Vancouver's political and business leaders invited the whole world to participate in the festivities.
The result was Expo '86, and more than 22 million people came for the party. It took eight years of planning and hard work to transform a former railroad yard into a colourful showplace full of pavilions and shows for the six-month event, but those lucky enough to have been there would agree that it was worth it. Expo '86, truly a world's fair,
included pavilions from 9 provinces and territories, 54 nations and international groups, and 3 American states. Many of Canada's largest industries joined in, as well, to celebrate the fair's theme, "A World
in Movement, A World in Touch." Vintage photographs recapture the fun and excitement of the largest event held to that time in British Columbia.

Halifax

$24.99

Few cities in North America compare to Halifax, capital of Nova Scotia, when it comes to history. Since it was founded in 1749, Halifax has been the venue for a wide range of historical firsts, ranging from the first Martello Tower to the first city lit
entirely by electrical light, from the first divorce court to the first zoo, and from the first distillery to the first saltwater ferry service. Halifax: South End looks at this wonderfully historic and varied city, concentrating on the South End and the downtown area from the 1860s through 1920. During this period, great change enveloped Halifax. War, fire, explosions, and other disasters reshaped the city, yet there were also joyous occasions to celebrate. Included in this collection are many never before seen photographs of the people and places of Halifax as well as images borrowed from the Public Archives of Nova Scotia. Discover life as it was lived during these volatile and formative years, with a city reflecting on its connections to Great Britain while forging ahead as part of a new country.

Kitchener (Berlin):

9780738511511

$24.99

Kitchener, Ontario, is a community with two histories. As Berlin, it was a rapidly growing and prosperous town reveling in its Germanic heritage. After dramatic civic upheavals from 1915 to 1919, it emerged, somewhat bruised, as Kitchener. From a twenty-first-century viewpoint, there often appears to be a disconnection between the two. Kitchener
(Berlin): 1880-1960 challenges this perception and bridges the two histories. Using mostly unpublished photographs, many from the Waterloo Historical Society's collection, the author captures the town that was and the city that is. Kitchener (Berlin): 1880-1960 brings to life many long-gone treasures,
such as the classic city hall, the post office, and the sugar factory. William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada's longest-serving prime minister, is seen during his hometown visits. Famous, as well as less familiar, individuals are captured, including Breithaupt and Bailey, Ahrens and Timm, Schmalz and Peoli, and Euler and Izma. This history also welcomes the reader to explore such questions as who was the father of Canadian soccer, who really turned on the first hydropower in 1910, who were "Big Charlie" and "Pop," and what was the Committee-of-One?

Saint John

9780738572222

$24.99

In its 225 years of existence, Saint John has undergone numerous transformations to become the city it is today. In 1783, an influx of American settlers resulted in upwards of 16,000 residents, and
by 1867, the city was the fourth largest in Canada. The most catastrophic fire in the city's history came in 1877, resulting in the loss of some 1,600 homes and businesses. Many of the structures were
rebuilt and are still standing today, contributing to the city's Victorian character. By the 1950s, historic structures began to disappear in the name of progress, and a huge urban renewal development was
carried out in the 1960s. Saint John: 1877–1980 highlights the many changes the city has seen over the years, through photographs of its neighbourhoods, play places, tourist attractions, and residents.

Saint John West and its Neighbours

9780738572697

$24.99

This fascinating collection of photographs brings to life the dramatic and colourful history of Saint John West and its neighbours. Over two hundred images show how this area developed during the last century as the fishing, shipping, and rail centre of Saint John; how it saw its business and residential districts gutted; how it struggled to rebuild itself and grow again, only to suffer a disastrous fire, revive a second time, and then slide slowly into decline during the latter decades of this century.

Together David Goss and Fred Miller guide us through the city's vibrant past: the events, industries, places, and people which have defined Saint John West over the decades. Photographs show the arrival of the railway, the flood of new immigrants, the development of the harbour, and the growth of the shipping industry. We see how significantly working conditions have changed over the decades for fishermen, foundry workers, and other local people. We see how much the local landscape has changed, with pictures of buildings both familiar and long gone and bustling streets such as King Street, Protection Street, and Union Street complete with drugstores, chowder houses, saloons, and other local landmarks no longer with us. The images capture catastrophes such as the Waterfront Fire of 1931 and celebrations such as parades and festivals. Most of all, they preserve and honour the lives of the ordinary people of Saint John West: streetcar drivers, firemen, harbour workers, fishermen, store owners, tipplers, schoolchildren, and foundry workers, amongst many others. We see how buildings, technology, fashions, and lifestyles have changed while a sense of community and a zest for life among local residents has remained constant over the decades.

North Vancouver's Lonsdale Neighbourhood

9780738572116

$24.99

North Vancouver occupies one of the world's most scenic urban settings. Lonsdale Avenue, running from the waters of Burrard Inlet to the mountains of the Coast Range, is the community's de facto main street. In early 1903, Alfred St. George Hamersley
purchased a substantial parcel of land from Henry Heywood Lonsdale and James Pemberton Fell's Lonsdale Estate. Hamersley's property, called the Town of Lonsdale, later became the town site of North Vancouver. In North Vancouver's early years, Lonsdale Avenue was the spine along which the community developed. Lonsdale is still North Vancouver's most important street and acts as the main artery for commercial, political, and social life. Through rare vintage photographs illustrating how people lived, played, and worked, North Vancouver's Lonsdale Neighbourhood explores the community's fascinating history.

East Saint John

9780738573946

$24.99

East Saint John, affectionately called the East Side, became a part of the City of Saint John in 1967. For decades prior to its merger, the city and east side community of the Parish of Simonds cooperated in many areas of municipal service. East Saint John contained many industries, including the dry dock, Foleys Pottery, and McAvitys, and later K. C. Irving's oil refinery at Silver Falls. During World War II , Fort Mispec was established at Mispec Point, and in 1970, the fort site became Irving Oil's Canaport. More than just an industrial area, East Saint John was the site of recreational fishing and boating and home to the neighbourhoods of Forest Hills, Glen Falls, Champlain Heights, and Jean and Belgrave Streets. East Saint John was also the home of the Moosepath raceway, Exhibition Park, and the Simonds Arena. Rothesay Avenue was the commercial heart of the east side until the 1970s, when new malls and shopping centers opened nearby.

Saint John West

9780738501666

$24.99

Saint John West Volume II adds to and continues the story of the West Side's struggle for existence. Always dependent on seasonal industry, initially fishing and shipbuilding and later the railway and seaport, the area has seen high and low points in its 200-plus years of existence. At one time, residents imagined times would become so prosperous that King Street would be transformed into a major boulevard paved with gold and Courtenay Hill would be the site of a huge, decorative cathedral dedicated to the inner spirit. In reality, the fish have stopped coming, the wooden ships are no longer built, and the Canadian Pacific railway that provided hundreds of jobs and promised such hope has left the Maritimes. Changing trade patterns and political favours to keep the St. Lawrence open to Montreal has devastated the winter-port operations. Many Saint John West residents have had to close their businesses and move on. Others were displaced when the construction of the Harbour Bridge tore three full blocks out of the heart of the community in 1968. Still others have chosen to remain, and today, though little industry exists, the area is still vibrant and working hard to hold together some vestige of the pride of former times.

Bridging Saint John Harbour

9781467120104

$24.99

In the 1850s, lumber mill owner W. Kilby Reynolds, with engineer Edward R. Serrell, succeeded in building the first suspension bridge to connect divided Saint John. This operated as a toll crossing until 1858, when it became a government-owned structure. From then until the present, there have been two vehicular-pedestrian bridges and two rail bridges serving travelers crossing Saint John Harbour at the gorge at the Reversing Falls. By the third quarter of the 19th century, there was talk and plans for a second bridge, one which would cross at Navy Island to the North End. It took about 80 years before this plan came to fruition, and the Saint John Harbour Bridge opened in 1968. Through this rich collection of photographs, Bridging Saint John Harbour clearly shows the importance of the varied connector bridges over Saint John Harbour and how they came to be built.

Wallaceburg

9780738501659

$24.99

Wallaceburg, a progressive industrial community, has
always been on the move. Its reliance on the local waterways through the Sydenham and Chenal Ecarte
Rivers illuminates an important lifeline in the town. The rivers' influence spans from the lumber boom days of the last century through the industrial periods to a primarily recreational view of Wallaceburg's waterways. The wide variety of images in this collection reflects the many facets of the community at both work and play. Wallaceburg: Faces and Places displays photographs from the collections of the Wallaceburg and District Museum, the Mann Historical Files, and Roy Mathany, who covered the World War II years via the Dominion Glass War Services Committee.

Chatham

9780738511504

$24.99

The more than 200 images for personal and private collections, some published here for the first time, serve to present a stunning and fascinating commemorative pictorial album of Chatham's rich history.

At the end of the nineteenth century, in the newly created city of Chatham, the possibilities seemed endless and almost utopian. Gone were the ramshackle wooden shacks that dominated its early days, and in their place were stately homes made of brick and stone. Taverns, mills, mercantile stores, mechanics' shops, shipbuilders, and iron foundries blossomed and flourished. Tall and small ships crowded the banks of the bustling Thames River, which had become Chatham's lifeline to the world. Such is the Chatham presented in this volume, which contains nearly two hundred striking images gleaned from personal and public collections. Many of these items, some published here for the first time, serve to present a stunning and fascinating commemorative pictorial album of Chatham's rich history. They will encourage readers to take a stroll on Tecumseh Park's lovers' lane, to board a grand steamer for an exciting river excursion, to prowl a King Street teeming with bicycles, horses, and carts, and to take a ride on those strange new horseless carriages.

Lancaster

9780738572857

$24.99

For many, the City of Lancaster lasted less than one generation. Incorporated as Canada's newest city on January 1, 1953, Lancaster was swallowed up in an amalgamation with Canada's oldest city, Saint John, on January 1, 1967, Canada's centennial year. Since then, the name Lancaster has conjured up images of that part of Saint John known as the west side, or Saint John West. Yet even prior to 1953, when Lancaster was a collection of communities including Fairville, Beaconsfield, Randolph, Milford, and South Bay, area residents have been bonded by a unique sense of community and pride. The name lives
on today in the Lancaster Mall and the Lancaster Centennial Arena, as well as in the names of local sports teams.
