Around Ripley

9780738513324

$24.99

Two hundred years ago, six tiny villages-Ripley, Corinna, Harmony, St. Albans, Dexter, and Cambridge-were established in the rolling hills of Central Maine, each no more than a few miles from the next. By 1810, the village populations were virtually identical. As waterpower technology advanced, the populations of the villages on bodies of water with sufficient fall increased as industry and commerce developed. However, electric power, the telephone, and the automobile were the great "eveners," and by the twentieth century, waterpower made little difference to the villages' economic growth. Despite fluctuations in population, these towns have remained rural hamlets and bedroom communities for nearby cities. Around Ripley attempts to capture the interesting history and everyday activities of these six towns through carefully selected photographs from each community.

The Oxford Hills

9780738536743

$24.99

The Oxford Hills have always been unique in the history of Maine. They were not settled until after the French and Indian War of 1763, and their isolation allowed the communities to develop distinct identities apart from external influences. The arrival of the railroad connected the area to Portland and Boston, sparking the development of a thriving wood products industry to complement the region s agricultural economy. As transportation developed, so did the outside world s awareness of the pristine natural beauty of the Oxford Hills, and the resulting influx of tourists and sportsmen brought further growth and diversity to the area. Despite the many changes that have transpired since the sound of the first axe resounded through the valley of the Little Androscoggin River, the Oxford Hills remain one of the most rugged, independent, and beautiful regions in all of Maine."

Deer Isle and Stonington

9780738557038

$24.99

Deer Isle, a coastal town in Penobscot Bay, was settled by farmers and mariners in the 1760s after the end of the French and Indian War. People, freight, and mail came by water to the secluded island where mackerel and lobster fishing were the mainstays of the island's economy. In the late 19th century, granite from booming Stonington quarries was shipped by boat. Summer visitors began arriving by the boatload to rusticate in gracious inns and seasonal cottages. These became the subjects of vintage postcards, many created by local photographers capturing the views of harbors and towns, rural roads and bridges, masts of the great sailing vessels, and derricks of the large quarries.

On October 17, 1947, a fire started near Newfield. It grew quickly and moved east, destroying Goose Rocks Beach, Fortune's Rock and parts of Cape Porpoise. Thousands of historic buildings perished. The 1947 blaze was unique in the scope of its devastation, but fire has claimed countless York County landmarks over the years. Development projects, neglect and weather have doomed many more. Lost York County presents rare photos of many of these buildings, preserving the visual record of lost town halls, churches, schools, homes and hotels, from Kittery to Biddeford. In this collection of many never-before-seen images, Steven Burr offers a tribute to places and memories seized by time.

Midcoast Maine: The Cunningham Collection transports us back to another time in American history when optimism and confidence soared and anything seemed possible. Based on the remarkable photographic work of brothers Frank and Bert Cunningham, this pictorial history effectively captures the people and their way of life long since gone from the midcoast region. Born in the small town of Washington shortly after the Civil War, the brothers traveled narrow dirt roads by horse-drawn wagon, covering an area that encompasses nearly three hundred square miles. In their works, they preserved for us not only the people and the places of the midcoast, but also something of its character as well.

The Ossipee Valley

9780738539058

$24.99

In 1668, a Sagamore Indian named Wesumbe conveyed all of the lands between the Great and Little Ossipee Rivers to Kittery trader Francis Small. This area ranged from the waters of the Saco to the Newichawannock River. For over

100 years, the land title was questioned. Finally, the ancient deed was declared genuine by two Boston experts: William P. Upham of the Suffolk County Court and Robert B. Swan, commissioner of public records for Massachusetts. Once the

court rendered the deed valid in 1772, this unbroken wilderness was surveyed. Within a few short years, five new communities emerged. Over 230 years later, The Ossipee Valley presents a visual history of the villages, lifestyles, and the countryside as it once was. Vintage photographs

witness a place of family and friends, working and sacrificing for what they believed important.

Guilford and Sangerville

9780738555119

$24.99

Guilford and Sangerville typify hundreds of small towns scattered across Maine, and this volume reveals the two towns' rich visual history. Each a beautiful community, and nearly self-sufficient until recently, they border each other with the beautiful Piscataquis River running between. Guilford sits on the north with Sangerville on the south. From the dawn of the Industrial Revolution to the advent of electricity, almost every river in the state spawned dozens of towns as waterpower was harnessed for a variety of mills. Railroads and the subsequent highways provided the needed transportation for importing raw materials and exporting finished goods. Rivers proved to be a blessing and a curse when severe floods washed away many businesses and homes, but the area remained vibrant. While Guilford and Sangerville are quieter now, they still boast strong and proud communities.

The Sebago Lakes Region in southwestern Maine is one of the Pine Tree State's most historic. The lake--along with the Presumpscot and Songo Rivers, Brady Pond and Long Lake--was a major transportation route for Native Americans and English and French settlers. Both conflicts and legends abound along these storied waters. The waterways supported the region's growth into a commercial center, as sawmills, gristmills and tanneries flourished during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Canals and railroads connected it to Portland and the rest of New England and brought many visitors, making it one of Vacationland's most popular destinations and the home of several historic summer camps. Join local author Ned Allen as he explores this rich past and celebrates today's resurgence in activity, arts and culture in Bridgton, Standish and other towns around the Sebago Lakes.

The Kennebunks in Vintage Postcards

9781467105415

$24.99

The town of Kennebunk split from the neighboring town of Wells on June 24, 1820, just three months after Maine became a state. Kennebunk’s proximity to three large bodies of water—the Kennebunk River, the Mousam River, and the Atlantic Ocean—fueled its development over thousands of years. Kennebunk’s waterways were home to Wabanaki hunters, settlement farmers, early lumber mills, and a booming shipbuilding business. The Maine coast soon brought tourists to Kennebunk and its beaches. By the 1930s, Kennebunk Beach and its surrounding area contained several hotels and beach cottages. Sites like the Wedding Cake House, Kennebunk Beach, Main Street, and Blowing Cave quickly reached new heights as well-known landmarks. Postcards played a part in fueling the powerhouse tourist industry that remains active to this day.

Organizations like the local Soldiers Welfare Council and the USO welcomed the troops even as women stepped into roles vacated by enlisted men and worked tirelessly to keep up the community's patriotic spirit. Distilled in Maine

9781626197756

$21.99

Early Maine ran on sweet and fiery New England rum. Later, rapid industrial advances and ever-present drinking opportunities made daily life unnecessarily hazardous. Overindulgence triggered a severe backlash, a fierce temperance movement and eighty-two years of prohibition in the Pine Tree State. While the coastal state never really dried out, the Maine Law sent both serious and social drinking under the table for the better part of a century. Liquor crafted in Maine has slowly and quietly remade itself into a respected drink, imbued with history and representing the best of the state's ingenuity and self-reliance. Contemporary distillers across the state are concocting truly local spirits while creative bartenders are mixing the new and old, bringing back the art of a fine drink. Join Portland food writer Kate McCarty on a spirited romp through the evolution of Maine's relationship with alcohol.

Vinalhaven Island's Maritime Industries

9781467122542

$24.99

Vinalhaven Island has been the home port of a productive commercial fishing fleet for over 200 years. By 1819, Vinalhaven vessels were fishing for cod and herring from Seal Island all the way to Labrador waters. By 1878, Carver's Harbor was lined with docks, fishhouses, a sail loft, a net factory, and the Lane & Libby fish plant. Throughout the 19th century, boats brought bait, salt, and supplies to Vinalhaven and returned with fish and granite from the island's quarries. Lighthouses at Brown's Head, Heron Neck, Saddleback Ledge, Goose Rock, and Matinicus guided mariners through storms. In Vinalhaven shops, boatbuilders constructed small dories, peapods and double-enders, masted schooners, and lobster boats, as well as the 365-ton Margaret M. Ford. Passenger ferries played an important role as the primary link between Vinalhaven and the mainland. The island has long been a successful center of maritime economic activity, so it is no surprise that islanders call it the center of the universe.

Upper Saco River Valley

9780738510040

$24.99

Until 1725, the Saco River was the main artery for the Pequawket Indians traveling in canoes to and from the Atlantic. Soon thereafter came trappers, followed by loggers, who harvested the colossal white pine and sent the logs floating down the river to sawmills mushrooming all along its course. By 1871, the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad had reached Fryeburg, fifty miles from Portland, thus linking the Upper Saco River with Boston and beyond. Soon, a steady stream of summer visitors began arriving in the region and the White Mountains beyond. Upper Saco River Valley: Fryeburg, Lovell, Brownfield, Denmark, and Hiram visits the days when logs floated down the river and trains thundered up and down the valley. The first stop is in Fryeburg, home of Fryeburg Academy and the Fryeburg Fair, the oldest and largest fair in Maine. Next is Lovell and its many lovely brick homes and Kezar Lake. The book then journeys to Brownfield, largely depicted before the devastating fire of 1947. Denmark was the home of Rufus Ingalls, the quartermaster general under Ulysses S. Grant. The volume ends in Hiram, the home of a famed Revolutionary War general who was also the grandfather of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Throughout the region and throughout this book are rarely seen vintage photographs of the Saco River and the nine covered bridges that once spanned it.

Yarmouth

9780738509945

$24.99

It is an odd fact that Yarmouth grew richer as it grew smaller. By 1849, parts of six towns had been formed from the original settlement and yet Yarmouth still prospered due to the many mills and shipyards clustered around its sheltered harbor. The mansions of sea captains and merchants arose along its elm-shaded streets. When shipbuilding and other key industries declined, the town turned to its scenic islands and peninsulas to attract cottagers and other tourists to a leisurely world of clambakes and sailing parties.

Yarmouth explores this fascinating coastal town in more than two hundred rare photographs. Haunting images, many of which have never been published, portray employees working in the shipyards and factories while the mill owners entertain in their gardens. The tranquility of life in Victorian cottages by the sea contrasts sharply with the drama of floods, fires, and train wrecks. Fourth of July celebrations appear raucous in comparison with the somber parades of Civil War veterans.

Beginning as a humble vaudeville hall in the Skowhegan-Madison trolley park, Lakewood Theatre has graced the southwestern shore of Lake Wesserunsett in Madison, Maine, since the turn of the 20th century. Under the masterful guidance of Herbert L. Swett, a Bangor native and Bowdoin graduate, Lakewood eventually developed into a nationally renowned playhouse that was called the Broadway in Maine by the New York Times in its heyday, from 1925 until World War II. In the years following the war, Lakewood was operated by Swett's heirs and became a virtual who's who of both Broadway and Hollywood, until it nearly went dark in the early 1980s. Operating today as a nonprofit community theater, Lakewood is the official state theater of Maine and the oldest continually running summer theater in the country.

Legendary Locals of Androscoggin County

9781467100946

$24.99

In as much as it has endowed the region with a rich heritage, plentiful stories, and a host of colorful characters, history has been kind to Androscoggin County. But history can also be dark and uncanny, as when Francis E. Stanley, a Lewiston resident and inventor of an early steam-powered vehicle, died in an automobile accident. It can be eerie, like when his twin brother opened an enormous hotel—now purportedly home to his ghost—that became the inspiration for Stephen King's novel The Shining. These twists of fate begin to unravel the tale of Androscoggin County's legendary locals. Some, like Benjamin Bates and Edward Little, are remembered for the institutions they helped create. Others raised the hopes and spirits of their neighbors, like Joey Gamache, who won two boxing world titles in the early 1990s. Still others are remembered for the subtler ways they affected change, like Rita Dube, who saved Lewiston's St. Mary's Church from demolition and helped create the Franco-American Heritage Center. Some notable residents ascended to the highest offices of government, others to national fame, but many are remembered for the significant ways they shaped their communities, and Androscoggin County, from within.

The Upper Kennebec Valley is one of the most important gateways to Maine's Great North Woods and has, for over 200 years, attracted those who love the wilderness, lakes, mountains, and streams. The Upper Kennebec Valley Volume II begins, once again, at The Forks, where the East Branch of the Kennebec and the Dead River unite to form the Kennebec. The
area has long been dominated by logging and tourism trades. Starting with the days of horses and oxen, when loggers and sports came to the woods by foot and wagon to the coming of the railroad and the automobile, we see the growth of these small towns and the hardworking loggers, daring river drivers,
sport hunters and fishermen, and those who guided and hosted them. Early scenes of the daily lives of valley folk enjoying local parades, picnics, reunions, and sporting events come alive within these pages.

The scenic Upper Kennebec Valley has played an important role in the history of Maine.

Long-frequented by Native Americans, this area was settled year-round after Benedict Arnold's ill-fated 1775 expedition to Quebec. The earliest settlers found great natural resources in the woods, lakes, and the river and moved in to set the stage for this area's future. The images in The Upper Kennebec Valley show life in the area from the earliest days of photography through the 1950s. You see the area's growth and development, and its people at work and play. Examining these pages, you will see early loggers; intrepid river drivers braving log jams and swift currents to get their wood to market; hunters and fishermen, long drawn to the area; and families going about their daily business. Wilton

9781467122443

$24.99

Wilton was incorporated in 1803, when it was a mostly self-sufficient agricultural community. Manufacturing was the backbone of town even before it was fully incorporated and would continue to be until the late 20th century. Early industrial success can be attributed to Wilson Stream, which provided waterpower for Wilton's mills. The names of Bass, Butterfield, Furnel, Walker, Robbins, and Goodspeed would become well known in Wilton as early entrepreneurs. George Henry Bass entered the shoe manufacturing business in 1876 and started his first shoe shop in 1879. G.H. Bass & Co. went on to become a major employer in the area and a nationally known company. The early 1900s was a time of great progress for the town in which the Wilton Academy was accredited, the town library was acquired, and the Wilton Woolen Mill was established. Several businesses also emerged on Main Street, including the Cony Miller Grocery Store, Mrs. Magrath's Millinery, Holman's Drug Store, and Stockford's Drug Store. Today, the essence of Wilton is still reflected in its official motto, A great place to live, work & play.

Bath and West Bath

9780738512563

$24.99

Originally founded as one town, Bath and West Bath have gone their separate ways since 1844. By that fateful year, the two areas had already developed different interests and identities. Whereas the western part of town remained agricultural, the eastern part—stretched along the Kennebec River—had become active in shipbuilding and maritime trade. After their separation, eastern Bath went on to become a thriving city, while the farms of West Bath eventually mingled with summer camps and cottages. Because Bath's shipbuilding industry made a successful transition from wood to steel and from sail to diesel power, the city remained in the forefront of maritime construction— helping to create the modern U.S. Navy, furnish fancy yachts, and build up-to-date fishing vessels. Although home to other industries besides Bath Iron Works, Bath came to consider itself the Shipbuilding City, with its high school sports teams being known as the Shipbuilders.

Falmouth

9780738562988

$24.99

From a small farming and fishing town to a growing community, uncover the history of Falmouth through a collection of rarely-seen images.

Falmouth began as a farming and fishing town with an active wooden ship-building industry along the Presumpscot River Estuary. The town later developed a number of small villages, each with a post office, stores, and its own school. Following the Civil War, the population dropped and did not begin to increase until the beginning of World War II. Wealthy Portland residents and out-of-state visitors established summer estates in Falmouth Foreside. With the introduction of the automobile and the electric trolley in the early 1900s, the Falmouth Foreside and West Falmouth areas enjoyed an influx of people who could live in Falmouth and work in Portland. After World War II, Falmouth continued to increase in size as roads were improved and more houses were built. Today Falmouth remains a growing community with extensive retail, health, retirement, and service facilities.

You'll Enjoy Shopping at Porteous

9781467172202

$24.99

For eighty-five years, Porteous, Mitchell & Braun stood guard in the heart of Portland, Maine’s Congress Street commercial district.

Founded in 1873, the firm spent its first three decades in Norwich, Connecticut, before it took over a failing department store in Maine’s largest city and became a beloved shopping tradition. Porteous was home to Portland’s Santa Claus, and its elaborate Christmas displays were a holiday destination for northern New Englanders. By the late 1970s, Porteous had expanded and opened branch locations throughout Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. As the retail industry experienced mergers and consolidations, the family-run Porteous bucked the trend and remained in operation longer than many of its former competitors. Although its Portland store closed in 1991, its iconic building has been creatively transformed into the Maine College of Art & Design.

Through interviews with residents, dignitaries, and former employees, and dozens of rarely seen photographs, department store historian Michael J. Lisicky recalls the time when the community knew "You’ll Enjoy Shopping at Porteous."

Eagle Island

9781467125628

$24.99

Elizabeth O'Connell and Stephen Harding capture the magic of Eagle Island through years of research, interviews, and the collection of photographs and visual images by the Friends of Peary's Eagle Island (FOPEI).

Eagle Island, located off the coast of Harpswell, Maine, is far enough into Casco Bay to offer isolation but close enough to capture the fascination of a young man. Its rocky spine meets the open Atlantic in rugged cliffs with the strength to transform the momentum of ocean swells into plumes of brilliant spray. The interior, covered with a diversity of flora, presents a gentle welcoming to seabirds and the occasional fauna. Robert E. Peary, a Bowdoin College graduate, bought the island and, using local craftsmen, built a cottage for his family to use as their summer home. After his discovery of the North Pole in 1909 with its celebration and controversy, Eagle Island became the family retreat, a refuge from the public scrutiny attendant an international hero. This is the story of three generations of the Peary family and their Eagle Island home. Peary's Promised Land, now a State of Maine Historic Site and museum, has become a magical place for countless visitors, resulting in its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 2014.

Legendary Locals of Bangor

9781467100731

$24.99

Since its settlement in 1769, Bangor's greatest resource has been its people. Long before 1834, when the town on the Penobscot became a city, future legends were born who transformed it into a world-class community. Hannibal Hamlin served as Abraham Lincoln's first vice president. Timber tycoon Sam Hersey financed urban development while less affluent folk such as Molly Molasses also made their mark. When philanthropists Stephen and Tabitha King are not writing best-selling novels, they are spreading their wealth throughout the community. Bangor's melting pot includes the Italian Baldacci family and the Jewish baker Reuben Cohen, who, with his wife Clara, raised their son Bill, a US senator and defense secretary. More infamous but equally legendary is brothel keeper Fanny Jones. Paul Bunyan earned a statue on Main Street. Airport troop greeters Kay Lebowitz and Bill Knight round out the list of notables. They are all jewels in Bangor's crown, and each in their own way is a bona fide legend.

Auburn

9780738572253

$24.99

Take a fascinating journey through the history of Auburn, Maine with more than 200 vintage photographs and anecdotes from the locals who experienced it.

According to local lore, Auburn's name comes from Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain, a line from Oliver Goldsmith's poem, The Deserted Village.

The first settlers were drawn to the Auburn area by the remarkable falls, lakes, and streams, which provided power for early shoe and textile manufacturers as well as opportunities for recreation. Visitors were also attracted by the tremendous natural resources of Sweet Auburn and tourism boomed in the nineteenth century, with people from away flocking to the area to enjoy cruises on Lake Auburn and to partake of spring waters and tonics.

As Auburn grew and changed, photographers began to preserve these developments on film. For the past 130 years, they have recorded the daily lives of the people of Auburn: their workplaces, schools, and houses; their modes of dress and moments of leisure; and the celebrations and disasters that have brought the people of Auburn together.

More than two hundred images of Auburn, many of which are from the archives of the Androscoggin Historical Society, have been woven with informative text to create this remarkable visual history. Allow the images to lead you back into the past; it is a journey worth making, and one that you will never forget.

University of Southern Maine

$24.99

Although the University of Southern Maine has existed under that name for less than a quarter century, its roots lie much deeper-in a normal school begun at Gorham in 1878; a junior college opened in Portland in 1933; and a business school, which lasted only from 1921 to 1925, but whose charter was revived two decades later to become Maine's only law school. Each of these roots underwent changes, and the alumni magazine now includes nine different seals across its news pages. The mergers of the founding institutions, plus the later development of new programs and the addition of new colleges, have made it a true university with the largest student enrollment of any educational institution in the state.

Following ancient aboriginal trails and early trade routes to Quebec City, Old Canada Road was traveled by Benedict Arnold and his army of 1,100 men in their failed 1775 quest to capture Quebec. By the mid-19th century the small villages along the route grew as the immigration of French Canadians blossomed and logging became a major industry in the region. This pristine wilderness also became a sportsman's paradise, attracting wealthy families from Boston, New York, and beyond. Today the Forks and West Forks cater to a new breed of sport as the center of white-water rafting on the Kennebec and Dead Rivers. The region is a major hub for snowmobiling, hunting, and hiking throughout the year.

$24.99

Brooklin is a Downeast coastal town surrounded by Blue Hill Bay to the east, Jericho Bay to the south, and Eggemoggin Reach to the southwest. Its location makes the town a mecca for sailing, fishing, lobstering, boatbuilding, and summer tourism. From the first settlers on Naskeag Point, the sea has shaped Brooklin's history.

Nineteenth-century archeological digs found relics of the ancient Red Paint People and Native Americans in Brooklin. In the early 1900s, Col. Adam Wesley Powell dug artifacts of these people, and later, the famous Norse coin was found here. In North Brooklin, the creatures in E.B. White's barn inspired the characters for Charlotte's Web. On Naskeag Point, a Revolutionary War battle was fought by the local residents. At Center Harbor, sardines and clam factories made Brooklin rich, and in Haven, Noah Tibbets started a summer colony of prominent residents. On Flye Point, another colony was founded on land deeded to the Flye family by the king of England. Boats were built at Allen's Cove, Herrick's Bay, Bridges Point, Benjamin River, and Center Harbor. With its numerous boatyards, the famous WoodenBoat School, and WoodenBoat magazine, Brooklin has been called the Boatbuilding Capital of the World.

Old Town

9781467123976

$24.99

Old Town, situated in north-central Maine, sits snugly along the mighty Penobscot River. Taking advantage of the river's vibrant woods and watershed, Old Town would become the country's leading producer of timber in its early history. Penobscot Indian tribes had inhabited the land for more than 6,000 years, but the area's resources were so vast that, by 1836, the first railroad in Maine had established a line from Bangor to Old Town, with many eager to access the town's wealth. Since its separation from the town of Orono in 1840, Old Town has developed a robust industrial base, including Old Town Canoe Company, Penobscot Chemical Fibre, T.M. Chapman & Sons, the Bickmore Gall Company, Jordan Lumber, LeBree's Bakery, and the James W. Sewall Company. Today, Old Town has lost much of its industrialized base, but nonetheless, its strong ethnic and religious communities, which have worked together for more than 175 years, stand ready to prepare the river town for a bright future.

Dixfield

9781467120081

$24.99

Before its incorporation in 1803, Dixfield was called Holmanstown, after its principal proprietor, Col. Jonathan Holman. Dixfield, the easternmost town in Oxford County, bordered two rivers, the Webb and the Androscoggin, which provided valuable waterpower and drained the town's rolling wooded hills and fertile valleys. The twin peaks of the Sugar Loaves form its most recognizable landmark. In the 1800s, Amos Trask purchased mills that had been built along the Webb River. Over time, his descendants, the Stanleys, Stowells, Eustises, and Harlows, steered Dixfield away from its agrarian roots towards becoming both the toothpick and spool manufacturing capital of the world. From the area's early homes, bridges, and streets to its pioneering toothpick mills and from lumber barons to antique dealers, Dixfield contains an array of photographs designed to present life as it was. The Dixfield community continues forging into the future, drawing on the sterling character of the people who have made it what it is today.

Camden and Rockport Revisited

9781467123143

$24.99

The towns of Camden and Rockport have had a rich, intertwined history since the first settlements in the mid-1700s. Until 1891, they were one town, built on the abundant natural resources of coastal Maine. Many residents in the early 19th century were farmers that carved out a living from the soil, or fishermen that harvested the teeming waters of Penobscot Bay. As the towns grew, successful industries were established that sustained the communities through the mid-20th century. These included fishing, textile mills, lime manufacturing, an anchor factory, and shipbuilding. Majestic schooners were built in the shipyards, and businesses such as the Bay View House hotel, S.B. Haskell's clothing store, numerous livery stables and harness shops, Joseph Brewster's Shirt Manufactory, and Knowlton Brothers Foundry lined the main thoroughfares. In Rockport, the Shepherd Company supplied lime, and the Rockport Ice Company cut ice on Lily Pond to be shipped as far as the Caribbean. These tight-knit villages, nestled where the mountains meet the sea, weathered fires and wars, celebrated the launches of massive sailing vessels, and welcomed summer rusticators who helped form a lasting legacy of arts, culture, and learning that continues to draw visitors today.

Baker Island

9781467129121

$24.99

Baker Island is a quintessential Maine island, frozen in time. It was settled in 1806 by one family, and the island's population peaked at about two dozen people in five households at mid-century. The US government made use of the island's strategic location at the entrance to Frenchman's Bay with a lighthouse and military facilities. Wealthy, artistic, and academic summer visitors to the region—so-called rusticators—discovered its charm as a day trip destination. However, by 1930, only the lightkeeper's family remained. Now mostly part of Acadia National Park, these 123 acres are precious to a disproportionate number of people. Every season, visitors flock to the area, scenic tour airplanes fly overhead, and narrated boat tours skirt the shoreline. Park rangers lead interpretive tours almost daily, leaving from Bar Harbor for half-day visits. Each summer, thousands moor their private boats and row ashore—honeymooning, celebrating, and even scattering ashes. Five generations of rusticators have held picnics on the tempestuous south shore's expansive pink granite surface known as the Dance Floor.

Yarmouth Revisited

9780738599038

$24.99

The Yarmouth area has always had a strong maritime history with a legacy of shipbuilding and those who chose the seafaring life. On land, Yarmouth had a diverse industrial history with goods produced in mills located on the four falls of the Royal River. As the town expanded in the late-19th century, civic leaders recognized the need to modernize its infrastructure. A library and central grammar school were built, sewer lines were laid, and telephone service and electricity became available. The railroads allowed for goods to be shipped in and out of the town, and new trolley lines promoted tourism in the area. The automobile changed the direction of the town literally as Route 1, built in 1948, became the primary road north and south to Portland, replacing coastal Route 88. By the 20th century, the shipbuilding era had come to a close and the mills were soon to follow. Despite these setbacks, the town of Yarmouth has consistently grown while maintaining the character of a small New England village.

Westbrook on the Presumpscot

$24.99

Life is always changing by the falling waters of the Presumpscot. This new photographic history compiled by the members of the Westbrook History 2000 Committee brings to life the deep heritage of an area that has gained strength and spirit from the river that flows through it. Over time, the river has been used as a source of food, recreation, and power for mills. Sadly, it has also been abused with overuse and pollution. It is now being slowly
restored, through legislation, modern technology, and human consideration. This book takes readers on a journey into the days when steamers plied the Presumpscot and life was a bit quieter. From Cumberland Mills and Highland Lake to Duck Pond and Prides' Corner, we view turn-of-the-century schools, homes, trolleys, street scenes, parades, and festivals. We also see where some of Westbrook's earliest residents lived and worked. Images of Frenchtown, Irish Hill, and Scotch Hill vividly show what life was like for the laborers and mill workers in the S.D. Warren and Dana Warp Mills.

Luann Yetter

Remembering Franklin County

9781596296107

$21.99

Snow swirled around the first Sandy River settlers in the winter of 1780, testing pioneering spirits. But the founders proved tough and able, incorporating Farmington in 1794 and soon establishing other towns, raising crops, building roads and institutions and bringing Franklin County to life. Former Lewiston Sun Journal columnist Luann Yetter describes the early years, the rumored Indian attack that led to the discovery of Rangeley Lakes, the World War I sacrifices of Company K and the Weld baseball player who managed Babe Ruth's Red Sox to two World Series championships. Yetter also notes the delinquent debt collected by Paul Revere, the murder suspect who made history by (unsuccessfully) defending himself and the near total destruction wrought by the flood of 1869. Describing war, wealth, industry and oddity, she reveals the richness of Franklin County's past.

Whispers and shadows from the past linger in and around Damariscotta. Mary Howe might have been buried alive in a mystic trance in the late 1800s. Displeased with such a claustrophobic and premature end, her spirit is said to haunt the cemetery to this day. Did the ghost of pirate Johnny Orr reveal a fortune in gold? Does the Lady of Ladd's Hill move objects and bump around in the night? When things go missing in Sheepscot Village, there may be a little ghost named Abernathy to blame. Spectral apparitions also abide in nearby Newcastle, and the towns of Lincoln County have an abundance of supernatural occurrences. Investigative reporter Greg Latimer uncovers the history behind these seemingly unexplainable stories.

Maine beer expert Josh Christie discovers the story of brewing in Vacationland by exploring Maine's large breweries, like Shipyard; its local crafters, like Rising Tide; the budding cider, spirits and mead industries; and, of course, the best places to drink across the state.
