Great scope of community history from log cabin at the edge of the Prairie next to the Big Grove, selection as county seat of Champaign County, to arrival of the Illinois Southern RR, selection as the location of the future University of Illinois, development of downtown, into the Modern Era. Pioneer lives and community images throughout. Written with a sense of humor, too as we learn that whisky and shrewdness played a part at pivital points. And the visits of Abraham Lincoln, who rode the 8th Judicial Circuit and ran a foot race across downtown against the local tavern owner!
