Visit historic Sag Harbor on Long Island, through whaling village to homes in the National Register and home to writers and artists.

A prosperous deepwater shipping port on the south shore of Long Island, Sag Harbor was in its heyday as a whaling village in the early 1800s. By 1850, whaling was unprofitable, petroleum had been discovered, and the 1849 Gold Rush led to an exodus. As Sag Harbor fell into economic decline, the arrival of the railroad helped reinvigorate it as a factory town, bringing Fahys Watchcase, Alvin Silver, Bliss torpedo testing, and Bulova, until those industries shuttered. The silver lining to Sag Harbor's boom and bust has been the preservation of its heritage. The grand homes of captains and whaleship owners, tradesmen's cottages, and factory houses were untouched for years, attracting a wave of artists, writers, and weekenders. This fine collection of 18th- and 19th-century homes and public buildings placed the village in the National Register of Historic Places, drawing tourists to walk in the footsteps of Native Americans, colonists, whalers, and resident-writers James Fenimore Cooper and John Steinbeck and to visit the village's war monuments and museums and charming Main Street.

Located some 60 miles northwest of New York City and 16 miles west of the Hudson River, the village began to develop in 1714. Goshen traces this development, highlighting the evolution of Park Square, the lovely Victorian homes, the tree-lined streets, the business district, and especially Historic Track, the oldest continuously operating harness track in the United States, and the Trotting Horse Museum, containing the Hall of Fame of the Trotter.

Take a fascinating journey through the history of Shelter Island, New York with more than 200 vintage photographs and anecdotes from the locals who experienced it.

In the spring of 1962, Captain Nathaniel Sylvester and his young bride, Grissel Brinley, stepped from their boat onto the narrow shore along Gardiners Creek. Nearby, in a clearing, stood a sturdy house, newly built of white oak timber from the surrounding forest. Shiploads of tiles and chimney bricks from Holland and household furnishings from England and Barbados had arrived during the preceding months. The Sylvesters would make Shelter Island their home.

Shelter Island: A Nostalgic Journey takes us to early homes, churches, and stores, and introduces us to the people who shaped this community. With over two hundred images carefully selected from the archive of the Shelter Island Historical Society, this unprecedented volume will be treasured and enjoyed by resident and visitor alike.

With this striking new pictorial history, local artist and historian Louise Tuthill Green has created a journey into the island's past. During the years that followed the Sylvesters' arrival, many families settled along these tranquil shores. Homesteads were built, farmland was cleared and cultivated, and businesses were established. Many boats sailed the area's sparkling inlets and bays, and guests to the area created a need for grand hotels and gingerbread cottages.

A tribute to the enduring courage and spirit of children of Baltimore from the mid 1800s-early 1900s.

In a city that has been, at once, blessed with a rich port and torn apart by war, filled with pristine parks and scarred by the ravages of industrial life, childhood has reflected the ever-changing times and culture in American life. From baseball games and trips to the zoo to schoolyard pals and amusement park rides, children explored the world around them. The nostalgia and innocence of well-born youth, however, mingled with the harsher realities that many boys and girls knew as their daily lives - laboring in the mills and factories, the haphazard destruction of fires and storms, the segregation of public places and the cold and hunger so keenly felt during the Great Depression.

Strolling through Morrisville, Pennsylvania, and the Delaware River's scenic falls, one wanders into a variety of places that have witnessed extraordinary events in America's life.

Beginning with William Penn's first land purchase from the Indian warriors at Graystones in 1682 and on to the many successful manufacturing companies in the 1930s and 1940s, this collection of over 200 photographs spans more than three hundred years of Morrisville's diverse history. In particular, this volume recounts many stories involving Summerseat, a structure that served as headquarters to General Washington in the winter of 1776 and as a home to American foreign consul Thomas Barclay and to Robert Morris (1791–98) and George Clymer (1798–1805), signers of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Besides just political figures, Morrisville has also been home to many contemporary personalities who have risen to national prominence in the sports arena and in the fine arts community.

This fascinating local history tells the story of this landmark and the creators of the renowned mountaintop haven, beautiful Mohonk in the Shawagunk Mountains, home to the Mohonk Preserve and Mountain House.

Mohonk is a name of Native American origin first given to a lake high in the Shawangunk Mountains of Ulster County. Mohonk Lake was sculpted eons ago by the crushing weight of advancing glaciers. Nature's handiwork resulted in a crystal blue lake rimmed by stately hemlock trees and sheer conglomerate cliffs. Mohonk Mountain House was established at the lake in 1869 by Quaker twins Albert and Alfred Smiley. They and younger half-brother, Daniel Smiley, created a mountaintop haven for their guests-a 251-room hotel set on acres of woodlands and gardens. Today Daniel Smiley's descendants welcome visitors to the last of the grand Victorian hotels in the Shawangunk and Catskill Mountain region. The Mohonk Preserve was carved from lands of the Mountain House beginning in 1963 and bears witness to the vision of the Smiley family. Its mission is to protect over 6,400 acres of semi-wilderness through its education, research, and land stewardship programs. Today, it is the largest nature preserve supported by members and visitors in New York State.

The history of scenic Pleasantville is a rich patriotic fabric woven with the arrival of the first tenant farmers and laborers during Dutch Manor rule.

During the Revolutionary War, local militias were critical in the capture of British spy Maj. John Andre. The construction of the railroad in 1846 opened new markets for farmers and attracted many New York City professionals wanting an idyllic countryside family setting. It also initiated the tradition of the daily commuter. In 1908, the wealthy Manville family moved to the village, and the 1928 wedding of their daughter to the Count Folke Bernadotte of Sweden was a major international social event. That same year, Dewitt Wallace and his wife, Lila, moved to Pleasantville to launch Reader's Digest. Within 20 years, the Little Magazine would grow to 30 editions in 14 languages with a global circulation of 28 million every month. Throughout the years, the one thread that appears in this remarkable village from start to finish is a kind tradition of charity.

One of the oldest amusement parks in the United States, and one of the last surviving “trolley parks,” Waldameer Park has provided generations with fun-filled afternoons.

Originally beginning as a picnic area known as Hoffman’s Grove on the banks of Lake Erie in Northwestern Pennsylvania, the Erie Electric Motor Company leased the park in 1896 and renamed it “Waldameer,” translated literally as “Woods by the Sea” in German. A trolley park’s main purpose was to entice people to ride the new-fangled trolley car on the weekends, and Waldameer accomplished that in spades. Initially, the park’s main attraction was its beach on the lake, a popular destination for people to go and escape the heat of summer, but over the years, Waldameer Park changed and grew significantly. In the early 20th century, rides like Dip the Dips, Ravine Flyer, and Mill Run grew to be the main attractions at the park. Over the past three decades, Waldameer Park has grown into a modern amusement park, while maintaining its beloved nostalgic atmosphere. Today, visitors cool off in the Water World water park and enjoy thrill rides like the Comet, Steel Dragon, X-Scream, and Ravine Flyer II.

Never before seen photographs depict the interesting history of Delaware Horse Racing.

Although Delaware is a small state, it has a rich history of horse-related activities, one of them being horse racing. From the early 1900s, horses have been used for various reasons, including farm work, means of transportation, pasture ornament, pleasure riding, and the popular sport of horse racing. Delaware Horse Racing takes the reader back decades to the good old days of popular tracks, such as Brandywine Raceway, Georgetown Raceway, Delaware Park Raceway, Dover Downs Raceway, and Harrington Raceway, where Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds raced hard and fast on half-mile and five-eighths-mile dirt tracks. Gathered from the collections of horsemen and horsewomen, previously unpublished historical photographs show legendary owners, trainers, drivers, and racehorses.

Never-before-seen photographs document the history of the diverse communities of the East Bronx.

Using a collection of many never-before-seen photographs, East Bronx: East of the Bronx River celebrates the history of this group of neighborhoods. From the late 1800s to the present day, the area has undergone many dramatic changes. The most important factor in the history of the east Bronx is the development of mass transit. Its introduction to the Bronx brought a new age of commuters, people seeking professions largely in Manhattan as well as the comforts of suburbia and a more rural atmosphere for raising families. The elevated trains and the highway construction between 1910 and 1940 helped to triple the population. Property values rose and new construction became commonplace along the waterfront from Pelham Bay to Clason Point as summer houses were built. Today, the area east of the river is a community rich in history and diversity. Here we can watch the changing landscape, as old modes of transportation replace new ones, neighborhoods evolve, and the people of the Bronx build communities full of pride.

In 1685, Dutch merchants Francis Rombout and Gulian Verplanck received their Crown patent for the purchase of what is known as the Rombout Patent.

This was the first and largest portion of Dutchess County to be licensed for purchase from the Wappinger Indians. The town of Fishkill covers only a small portion of this 85,000-acre parcel of land, but it played an important role for years to come in the shaping of the region and the nation. Constructed in 1919, OHEKA CASTLE, Long Island's largest Gold Coast mansion, was once described by the New York Times as the finest country house in America.

Enrico Caruso sang in its grand ballroom, and Arturo Toscanini lifted his baton to its soaring ceiling. Appearing as the mysterious mountaintop castle in the opening scenes of the film classic Citizen Kane, its majestic edifice and meticulous grounds continue to dazzle the screens of major Hollywood movies and television shows. It was a playground for the rich and famous of the Gilded Era, when heads of state, royalty, stage and screen stars, great comedians, and bohemians alike cavorted about its great halls. In subsequent years, it became home to an eclectic array of occupants, including New York City sanitation workers, World War II radio trainees, military school cadets, and eventually vandals and squatters. After its abandonment and descent into unrecognizable ruin, a Long Island developer with an appreciation for history reversed the adverse effects of time and neglect, transforming OHEKA into the largest restored home in America.

Join author Joan Williams as she takes you on a journey into Morristown, New Jersey's past and brings it back to life as it was.

For many Americans, Morristown evokes pictures of ragged troops huddled in log huts, shivering in the bitter cold of winter—but there is more to the history of the town than its important role in the Revolutionary War. By the early 19th century, Morristown was a thriving community, whose growth was accelerated by such projects as the Morris Canal and the railroad. It was finally incorporated in 1865 and the city attracted wealthy New Yorkers who built magnificent mansions, many of which can still be seen today. In 1878, the Library and Lyceum opened, bringing art and culture to the booming town. Immigrants were also attracted to Morristown and the Association of Work Among the Italians was founded in 1898 (later renamed Neighborhood House as the ethnic population diversified further), which instructed the new immigrants in English and provided services for their children.

The 20th century saw many changes. The first trolley rumbled around the Green in 1909, and motor cars soon appeared on the streets. Young men and women went off to two world wars to serve (and many to die for) their country. With the 1960s came urban renewal. As many old buildings were destroyed, corporations took the place of many of the large mansions and new highways were developed. Yet, still, in the quiet back streets, and among some of the old buildings, a hint of the past can still be seen.  This piece will delight young and old, visitor and resident alike.

The Borough of Belmar was carefully laid out by developers so that most streets run between the Atlantic Ocean and Shark River, capitalizing on the cool breezes and scenicviews of this area. In the early days there werenumerous luxurious hotels, many of which are pictured in this new pictorial history along withnostalgic images of swimming, boating, and fishing in the early years of this century. Drawing on rarely seen photographs and other materials from the Teaneck Public Library and private collections, author Jay Levin chronicles the intriguing history of Teaneck.

Originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Indians and settled by the Dutch, Teaneck has come to embody the American experience. Created in 1895 from the vast, wooded estate of its most eminent citizen, William Walter Phelps, the bucolic township along the Hackensack River boomed in the 1920s, its population quadrupling during construction of the nearby George Washington Bridge to New York City. Developers could not put up homes fast enough in a suburb offering beauty, location, and every convenience. It is a community of myriad distinctions: exemplar of successful municipal management, “model town” deemed worthy of emulation, college town, and, in the 1960s, the first majority-white community in the United States to voluntarily integrate its school system.

As colonial New Yorkers expanded their housing and employment options beyond Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, southeast Queens became a destination for Dutch and English families who wanted more land and a better life.

Beyond the confines of the village of Jamaica in Queens emerged a community of strivers - farmers and entrepreneurs - who founded St. Albans in 1899. A housing boom in the 1920s and 1930s in Queens brought more residents with European heritage to St. Albans. Yankee slugger Babe Ruth spent so much time at the St. Albans Golf and Country Club that many area residents thought he lived there. Meanwhile, a racial covenant in Addisleigh Park, an affluent section of St. Albans, threatened to keep African Americans out of the neighborhood until the federal government outlawed the practice in 1948. Over time, many African American jazz musicians and entertainers along with middle- and working-class families have called St. Albans home. Today, St. Albans is a predominantly middle-class African American and Caribbean American neighborhood that continues to embrace its ambitious past through strong connections to business, civic, political, and religious groups.

Since 1708, the hamlet of Bay Shore has developed a rich heritage through embracing the tapestry of multiculturalism and utilizing its natural resources to build a vibrant, enduring community.

Known as Penataquit among the Secatogue Indians, Bay Shore residents have borne witness to the American Revolution, the rise and fall of the fishing industry, the boom and bust of the Gilded Age, the impact of deinstitutionalization, and community revitalization. From Bay Shore's beginning, the community has birthed artists, activists, athletes, industrialists, laborers, and politicians. The heirs of this 26,000-person hamlet's heritage continue to build and define the place as a viable community in the 21st century.

A frozen history of the Ice Box of New York Cityas told by archival and private images from the people who experienced it.

Rockland Lake, Hook Mountain, and Nyack Beachare located just 30 miles north of New York City. From the 1830s to 1930, the area was one of the largest producers of natural ice and was also the site of large traprock quarries.

On the western side of Hook Mountainlies Rockland Lake, the only natural spring-fed lake entirely located in Rockland County. The lake was known around the world for its famous pure blue iceand was referred to as the ice box of New York City. The Nassau County Police Department was created in 1925 out of an urgent need for a professional law enforcement agency to provide swift, reliable, and trusted protection for its citizens

During those unprecedented times, Greater New York was rapidly encroaching on Nassau County's western border, and the escalating crime rate in this bucolic island setting was due in large part to the Volstead Act, which ushered in the mob-infused Roaring Twenties, with its related violent and turbulent unrest. After the rebellious 1920s and the Great Depression followed a long dark period of global hostilities and impending threats of homeland invasions from foreign enemies in World War II. The founding members of this department, equipped with little other than their dedication, bravery, fortitude, and self sacrifices, established a strong foundation for one of the finest police departments in the country today.

Brimming with a rich history and local flavor that has gone largely undocumented for more than three hundred years, Belleville began as a small Dutch settlement in the 1670s and has grown into a busy suburb of 32,000 people, located only fifteen miles west of New York City. Situated on the west bank of the Passaic River, early Belleville was a center for early industry and water transportation and is noted as the birthplace of America's industrial revolution. From the legendary secret tunnels running beneath the Dutch Reformed Church to the beauty of Belleville Park, which sits beside one of the largest annual cherry blossom tree displays in the nation, Belleville tells the story of an often forgotten but noteworthy era in the turbulent development of early America. The summer retreat of Stone Harbor at the Jersey shore is shown here in pictures from its earliest days.

On a barrier island near the southern tip of the Jersey shore lies the borough of Stone Harbor. Resting between the shore and the salt marshes, Stone Harbor was recognized in the early 1900s as a natural summer retreat. Stone Harbor presents the development of this popular vacation destination with historical pictures and the previously unpublished photographs of Percy J. Cole. As seen through the lens of this talented photographer, Stone Harbor in the 1930s through the 1970s represents days remembered as those of ideal summers at the shore.

Stone Harbor has the distinction of being one of the earliest planned resorts. The Risley brothers were responsible for transforming idyllic dunes into broad avenues for a town that boasted all the modern utilities. Photographs of the construction scenes that brought about this change, architectural overviews of the first cottages, other scenes from the then sparsely populated town, and wildlife photographs from the only town-supported heronry in the United States are just part of what make up this beautiful collection. Stone Harbor includes a look at the nautical life of this seaside resort, which is home to the Comet class sailboat.
