Otsego

9780738550718

$24.99

Heavily laden with deciduous trees and interspersed with lakes, rivers, ponds, and prairies, the area of Otsego was part of the region known as the Big Woods. Located at the junction of two major waterways, the Mississippi and Crow Rivers, this fertile land attracted its first settlers of European descent in 1852. After only a few short years the land was clear, businesses, schools, and homes were built, and an abundant future in agriculture had begun. The story of Otsego, as told through pictures, newspaper clippings, and the memories of local residents, shares how generations of war heroes, agricultural scientists, and entrepreneurs survived years of hardship to eventually form what is now the youngest city in
Minnesota, having been incorporated in November 1990.

Waterloo and Byram Township

9780738550268

$24.99

Throughout its history, Byram Township has thrived upon its rich natural resources. Farmers worked its fertile soil and industrialists exploited the area's rolling hills—thickly forested and full of iron ore—long before Pennsylvania became the capital of the United States steel industry. Byram Township, however, is perhaps best known for its many lakes and ponds, which have spurred the community's
industries, transportation, and recreation. During the nineteenth century, the township's rivers and lakes helped to form the Morris Canal, a man-made water highway for the transportation of cargo from Phillipsburg to Jersey City. Once a stop along the Morris Canal, Waterloo is now a historical attraction and a living testament to how Byram Township residents once lived and worked along the canal.

Berea

9780738533308

$24.99

Quarrying was a major industry from roughly 1850 to 1950 in
Berea, attracting large numbers of immigrants in search of work.
Baldwin Institute and University (1846) and German Wallace College (1863) created an academic atmosphere, and Berea's citizens became an eclectic and resilient mix of academics, business people, and immigrants. Eventually, quarrying ended, and the downtown business district, the Triangle, was nearly destroyed by fire three times. Each time the determined residents of Berea rebuilt. Today, Berea is a unique Cleveland suburb. Baldwin University and German Wallace College merged, and the south side of town has been devoted to recreation by the Cleveland Metroparks System and the City of Berea. The largest quarry became Coe Lake, a site for fishing, canoeing, art fairs, concerts, and ice-skating. Coffee shops, boutiques, and art galleries now thrive in old livery stables, icehouses, and hardware stores. Many of the grand homes of the 19th century still stand, proudly boasting their bronze Century Home plaques.

Brighton

9780738569413

$24.99

The town of Brighton was founded by railroad man and real estate developer Daniel F. Carmichael at the junction of the Denver Pacific (now Union Pacific) and Denver and Boulder Valley Railroads. Carmichael determined, "There should be a town here that would do credit to the splendid valley." The junction, originally named Hughes after the first president of the Denver Pacific Railroad, had a long history as a crossroads of the West. The town grew into an agricultural center for the Platte River Valley with a thriving sugar beet industry, dairies, and canning factories, but the changing economy would transform Brighton first into a suburban community and now into one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.

Near beautiful cascading waterfalls, European immigrants found a magnificent place to share hard work, old-world customs, family traditions, and pride in their new home. Lisbon's history is as intricately woven as its fine Worumbo cloth. The town has suffered ravaging floods and fires, yet it has triumphed with the indomitable spirit of the community. Hancock County

9780738543314

$24.99

Hancock County, West Virginia, located in the Upper Ohio Valley, was first settled during the Revolutionary War. Over the next century, it transformed from a frontier forest into rolling fields, pastures, and orchards. In the 1830s, investors began building brickyards in New Cumberland, which would become the county seat. Hancock County was still primarily home to farmers and brickhands until the construction of potteries (including the world's largest pottery, Homer Laughlin China), which gave birth to the towns of Chester and Newell. The location of a steel mill near Hollidays Cove created the town of Weirton. The new industries tripled the county's population and provided employment to three and four generations of county residents. Recently tourism and recreation have become increasingly important to the local economy, evolving from the bygone days of Rock Springs Park to the ever-expanding Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort of the present.

$24.99

West Boylston is located at what was the junction of the Quinapoxet and Stillwater Rivers and the south branch of the Nashua River. The town's center developed here to take advantage of the waterpower for industry. In the 1890s, the state of Massachusetts recognized this abundance of water as ideal for a reservoir. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, the center of town and almost all the local industries were destroyed to create the Wachusett Reservoir, which began providing water to the growing city of Boston. Only one building, the Old Stone Church, was allowed to remain. It still stands by the side of the water, providing one of the most picturesque views in all of New England. West Boylston tells the story of this town's history and how it has survived and flourished.

Plymouth, Connecticut

$24.99

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the town of Plymouth, Connecticut—formerly known as Northbury—was settled only by scattered groups of Indians and hearty newcomers from Europe. As time went on, however, the Town of Plymouth developed into an industrial community composed of nine organized districts: Plymouth, Greystone, Allentown, the Lakes, Pequabuck, Terryville, East Plymouth, and the Holt District. Residents of Plymouth were industrious and inventive from the very beginning. In 1793 Eli Terry founded the clock-making business that became the foremost enterprise in the town's history, and in 1854 the expansion of the Eagle Lock Company fostered the development of Terryville. During the course of the nineteenth century, a plethora of smaller companies developed along the town's many waterways, manufacturing everything from furniture to toys, plows, and hats. Plymouth, Connecticut chronicles the development of the town through the years with a remarkable series of vintage images and informative text.

For most of her 170 years, Carl Keith Greene writes, London has been just like any other town in America. But Greene, a prominent photographer, knows that this is what makes London special; that the community spirit and friendliness of a small town are invaluable in a world where time seems to pass ever faster, as the computer age makes

North Aurora

$24.99

North Aurora: 1834–1940 is a quintessential study of what happened when settlers arrived in the Midwest in the 1830s. The village's location on the Fox River provided plentiful trees and waterpower for sawmills. Soon other mills, smelting works, a packing plant, a door-sash-blind factory, and a creamery all came to town. The village's railroad enabled its Boswell Cheese Factory to ship cream cheese to England in 1877. By 1922, North Aurora had a huge entertainment complex, a popular racetrack, and a hotel. Today the village is growing rapidly but still maintains its rural atmosphere.

Growth in the primarily agricultural region was slow until the coming of the North Missouri Railroad and the Graduation Act that made land available from the federal government for 12.5¢ an acre. With the introduction of breeding and training saddle horses, the discovery of fire clay deposits, and the implementation of more efficient means of turning the clay into heat resistant brick, Mexico's star ascended. During its heyday, the city was known as the saddle horse capital and the firebrick capital of the world. Today Mexico continues to survive and thrive as main street of the Midwest.

Andrew Jackson passed through Lincoln on his way to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, when the town was still known as Kingsville and before it was renamed in 1856 for a famous soldier who fought in the War of Independence. Douglas/Grand Boulevard

$24.99

The history of Chicago can be told through its neighborhoods, and perhaps none is more telling than Douglas/Grand Boulevard on the city's south side. The future site of the neighborhood remained a sparsely settled prairie until the early 1850s, when Stephen A. Douglas purchased a large tract of land and began developing a residential subdivision for the wealthy. Douglas/Grand Boulevard: A Chicago Neighborhood explores the development of this distinctive community and the many obstacles its residents encountered. Originally a predominately white neighborhood, Douglas/Grand Boulevard became an African-American community during the Great Migration when thousands of Southern blacks moved north seeking greater opportunities. After the 1919 Race Riot, an increasing number of white residents moved away from the neighborhood, and the community became a national model of black achievement.

Navasota

9780738595023

$24.99

Navasota is named for the nearby Navasota River. The naming of the river is linked, most plausibly, to an encounter on its banks in the 1540s between Indians and a Spanish expedition led initially by the then-deceased Hernando de Soto. Indians believed that spirits of the dead were associated with rivers. Accordingly, though he was interred earlier in the Mississippi River, the Indians saw de Soto's spirit reborn in their river, hence the legendary term Nativity de Soto, shortened to Navasota. As this book shows, the history of Navasota has revolved around the theme of birth. It stands in the Cradle of Texas, associated endemically with the founding of Spanish Texas and later with the birth of the Republic of Texas. At the crossroads of Texas, Navasotians have pioneered new industries while moderating equilibrium between a genteel society bent on expanding the mind and a ruffian element tamed only at the hands of an icon in American folklore.

Since its formation in 1855, Snyder County has played many important roles. It was a key link in the nation's first mass-transit system, the Pennsylvania Canal; the home of the commonwealth's last three-term governor, Simon Snyder; and the seat of one of the nation's oldest coeducational colleges, Susquehanna University. Snyder County explores this area's rich history through beautiful photographs, many of which were culled from treasured family albums. While this volume commemorates more than one hundred fifty years of history, particular attention is paid to the period from 1860 to 1960 through two hundred original photographs, many of which are published here for the first time.

Union County

9780738515885

$24.99

Nestled in the heart of the Northeast Georgia Mountains, Union County is a unique blend of modern America that maintains the charm of the legendary Appalachian era, a developing community surrounded by pristine forests, a land of scenic beauty, and friendly people. It was formed from land once inhabited by the Cherokees and came into existence in the early 1800s. Descendants of Scottish, Irish, and English lineage became the predominant settlers in the area. Many generations of "mountain people" in Union County have led lives filled with determination, endurance, resourcefulness, and self sufficiency.

Those character traits continue to be evident among those who call one of America's most scenic areas home. Part of the Chattahoochee National Forest covers approximately one-half of the land in Union County-much of it wilderness as it has been for centuries. From the mountain peaks to the lakes, along the roadways and wilderness trails, Union County features flowing streams, waterfalls, native animals, spectacular flora, and magnificent views of abundant forests. This volume will delight readers as they journey through the history of such areas as Choestoe, Arkaquah, Brasstown, Gum Log, Ivy Log, Dooley, Young Cane, Coosa, Owltown, Cooper's Creek, Gaddistown, Suches, and Blairsville. This pictorial chronicle brings to life the perseverance of those who have gone before, providing a record of their contributions and accomplishments.

Marcy

$24.99

Marcy is not a town but rather a township made up of several hamlets, Stittville being the largest. These hamlets originated with groups of various religions and nationalities, such as Welch, Methodist, and Baptist. The one thing they all had in common was their desire to survive and prosper. The answer was in farming and all the hard work that had to be done every day. In the late 1850s, everything changed when the railroad came to town. Travel outside the farm fences became easy and enjoyable. Residents could catch the train and, in only 20 minutes, be in Utica, a whole different world, with stores and merchandise unlike anything on the farm. Today the farming has all but gone, and Marcy is largely a bedroom community with a mixture of small shops, electricity and water distribution systems, and higher education institutions.

Nodaway County

9780738552217

$24.99

One of six counties carved out of the Platte Purchase, added to Missouri in 1836, Nodaway County appeared to its first white explorers to be a rolling prairie, marginal for agriculture but full of opportunity for those willing to bring hard work and ingenuity to the land. Within a generation of building cabins and experimenting with a wide variety of agricultural enterprises, the county boasted at least 17 towns, four railroad lines, 16 newspapers, and all the economic and cultural institutions necessary for boosters to lay claim to progress and civility. While residents of towns and the countryside often drew distinctions between one another, their lives were intertwined by mills, horse farms, livestock shows, new technology, churches, schools, public entertainment of every sort, and occasional times of hardship. By the 1920s, the communities of Nodaway County, supported by a vibrant and diverse rural economy, reached a zenith of locally generated economic growth and community activity, captured artfully by photographers during the decades that bracketed the turn of the 20th century.

College Park has the look and feel of small-town America, with its central business district and tree-lined residential streets, schools and churches, and strong sense of community. College Park, though, was never a town; it developed as a neighborhood within the city of Orlando. The name originated not with a college but instead with a developer, who gave the streets in his new subdivision college names in 1921. In 1925, another developer named the first of several subdivisions College Park. The name caught on and became official with the naming of the College Park Post Office in 1954. Images of America: College Park commemorates 90 years of its history and community. From the 19th-century citrus groves, to new subdivisions in the 1920s, to tract housing in the 1940s and 1950s, College Park evolved as a desirable place for families.

Located south of Provo and artistic Springville, Mapleton was named in 1901 for its abundance of colorful maple trees. For centuries, American Indian tribes had regarded the bench overlooking Hobble Creek and the valley below as sacred ground and gathered there annually. Catholic explorers hiking down Spanish Fork Canyon, nestled beneath a majestic mountain, first mapped the area in 1776. These Spaniards named the peak Sierra Bonita, though nearly everyone today calls it Maple Mountain. By 1850, Mormon pioneers had settled in Springville, using the rich earth between the creek and the river as farmland. Little by little, they built homes and stayed. The continued perseverance of this community to maintain its country charm is evident throughout the city. Conservation of the foothills and open spaces is an ongoing concern to residents.

Rugged in beauty and rich in history, Constitution Island lies at a picturesque bend of the Hudson River, opposite West Point and north of New York City.

As the location of the first fortifications built to defend American independence, it was the anchor site of the great chain, which stretched across the Hudson to impede British passage. During the 19th century, it was the home of two extraordinary sisters, Susan and Anna Warner. Raised in wealth and comfort, they struggled with their father's economic ruin during the panic of 1837. Accomplished and resourceful, they turned to writing for a living. Susan's best-selling novel, The Wide, Wide World, made her a celebrity, while her sister Anna's hymn, Jesus Loves Me, became known around the globe. In the early 1900s, Otisville became a chief supplier of butter for the New York City market. Lake Quannapowitt

$24.99

Lake Quannapowitt is named for James Quonopohit, a member of the Pawtucket tribe of Nipmuc Indians and signer of the 1686 deed selling land to European colonists. A town called Redding (now Wakefield) developed on the shore of the lake that provided colonists with a bounty of fish, including salmon and alewives, until mills stopped their passage upstream. The town remained rural until the Boston and Maine Railroad arrived in 1845. Overnight, new markets became accessible, and Lake Quannapowitt ice was exported to destinations worldwide. Icehouses dominated the shoreline and stood side-by-side with boathouses and bathhouses. Some in Wakefield remember the last days of ice harvesting, although barely a trace of its existence remains. More residents remember Hill's Boathouse and Dance Hall, where many a romance began. For recent arrivals who walk and jog its idyllic 5-kilometer shore, the lake's industrial and complex past will come as a surprise.

The Esterly Harvesting Machine Company and the Winchester and Partridge Wagon Works established their first factories in Whitewater after the coming of the Milwaukee and Mississippi. Their manufactured goods were known around the country for exceptional quality. A myriad of new inventions and patents came from Whitewater's business population, and Whitewater's farmers and dairymen consistently won prizes for their produce, while its factories produced reapers and wagons that won national competitions. In the 1890s, however, development suddenly stopped and Whitewater lost its economic clout in a few short years. This book explains what happened to Whitewater.

Fueling Perry's vibrant history are the many people who came to town seeking opportunity. From the arrival of early European settlers to the development of a Latino community in more recent years, Perry continues to be a place for people to set down roots and find a home. The town became notable primarily for the climactic Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. Middletown is home to several important institutions, including the Wayside Inn, the oldest continuously operating inn in America, and the great Wayside Theater, which operated for 52 seasons and hosted prominent actresses like Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates. Through vintage photographs ranging from the establishment of Virginia's first agricultural high school to the inception of Lord Fairfax Community College, which developed from humble beginnings into one of the fastest-growing colleges in the state, Middletown is a visual celebration of a community that has blossomed into a picturesque town.

Grand Rapids in Stereographs

$24.99

Beginning around 1865, as the fledgling art and science of photography began to appear in cities and towns across the United States, a small group of photographers, using new methods and equipment developed a few years before in Europe, began producing and offering for sale stereographic views of the people, places, and events that made up daily life in the then nearly 40-year-old city of Grand Rapids. These photographic views were unlike others
that had preceded them and when viewed using a special device, they presented a detailed, three-dimensional portrait of the young city. Once introduced, stereographic views of the city, alongside those of more distant lands, became wildly popular and soon graced the homes of many in this city and elsewhere. The stereographic cards themselves today offer a rare and detailed glimpse of
the city, its residents, and some of the special and unusual events that occurred nearly 150 years ago.

Ingram Historical Society (A)

Ingram

9780738549934

$24.99

Founded in 1902, the history of Ingram borough goes back to 1752, when the land was part of Chartiers Township. A grand jury granted a petition to incorporate Ingram as a borough in 1902, and it was named after Thomas Ingram who owned much of the land. The new borough was promoted as a peaceful community located away from the smoke and noise of Pittsburgh's heavy industry. Efficient transportation came to the area in 1865 when the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad completed a line west of Pittsburgh known as the Panhandle. At its peak, a total of 98 trains operated along this route each day. With the coming of electric trolley cars and the formation of Pittsburgh Railways Company, Ingram had two reliable modes of travel.
Through vintage photographs, Ingram showcases how this dedicated and friendly community has forged into the 21st century while remaining committed to its many fond traditions.

Escondido Grape Day Festivals

9780738559490

$24.99

Escondido is the lilting Spanish name meaning hidden and was given to an irregular-shaped inland Southern California valley where an investment group planted 100 acres of grapes in the early 1880s.

The dry-farmed grapes grew unusually large and sweet, which prompted business leaders to envision an attraction similar to Pasadena's Tournament of Roses. The first Grape Day Festival in 1908 commemorated an auspicious occasion in Escondido's water history and celebrated the grape as a symbol of the agricultural abundance of the region. The event attracted thousands of guests who could view the valley, farm displays, a grand parade, and entertainment while eating their fill of free grapes. But by mid-century, Grape Day disappeared along with the grape in Escondido. With the memory of the grape remaining clear, the Escondido Historical Society began the revival of the celebration in the 1970s.

Urbanna

Urbanna is one of oldest English-settled towns in America. In 1680, the Virginia Assembly created the town by approving the Act of Cohabitation, which was designed to create 19 towns in Virginia. Urbanna was officially established in 1706 by the assembly, which named the town Burgh of Urbanna, Latin for City of Anne, after Queen Anne of England. Throughout the colonial period, the town was a tobacco inspection port. It was invaded by the British during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and then by Union troops during the Civil War. After the Civil War, oysters from the Rappahannock River became the primary source of income for residents until the 1960s. As a tribute to the oyster, the town annually holds the Urbanna Oyster Festival, which draws over 60,000 people to the shores of the little town.

Snowflake

9780738548388

$24.99

A temple with the traditional angel-tipped spire stands on a little juniper-covered hill in the northeastern Arizona town of Snowflake as a testament to the hard work and sacrifices of early Mormon pioneers. These ranching and farming families, sent from fruitful Utah to colonize a land only marginally suitable for farming, became experts in irrigation as they struggled to utilize the waters of Silver Creek and the Little Colorado River. Through sheer determination, they turned alluvium into verdant fields, and the surrounding well-drained Great Basin Desert Shrub became their pastures. But their religion and their families were always the main focus. Today the growing communities of Snowflake, Taylor, and Shumway attract new residents and visitors alike with the beauty of their natural setting, mild yet distinct seasons, and hometown charm. Many historic pioneer-era buildings have been restored to honor the area's unique past.

Located within the boundaries of the towns of Allenstown and Pembroke, Suncook, first granted as a township in 1728, has developed a rich history all its own. Railroad transportation was instrumental to the establishment and growth of three large textile mills. The first railroad system, the Concord and Portsmouth line, began in 1852. A second line, the Suncook Valley Railroad, followed in 1869. Drawn by advertisements in Canadian newspapers, French Canadian workers began migrating from Quebec in large numbers. By the late 1800s, Suncook had become known as "le Petit Canada." The power of the Suncook and Merrimack Rivers, scenic beauty in the area, and the connectivity brought through transportation helped transform a small industrial village into a vibrant and lasting community.

In 1881, the Arizona legislature broke from the tradition of naming counties after local Native American tribes when it carved Graham County out of Pima and Apache Counties and named it for the 10,516-foot Mount Graham, the highest peak in the area. The last refuge of the legendary Native American war leader Geronimo, the region also boasts some of southeastern Arizona's most beautiful topography, including the Santa Teresa Range, Mount Turnbull, the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness, Roper Lake, the Pinaleño Range, and the Gila River. Moore operated a freight station on the west bank of the river, but after an argument with a postal inspector who proclaimed that homemade "hooch" was not to be sold in an enterprise that handled government mail, the post office was moved to the Avondale Ranch and took on the ranch's name as the Avondale Post Office. Manhattan Beach Police Department

9780738520896

$24.99

The small community of Manhattan Beach, located in the county of Los Angeles, is situated on the shore of the Santa Monica Bay. Late in the 1800s, there was little need for law enforcement: this unspoiled terrain along the ocean coastline with its shifting sands, scrub brush, and native wildflowers had yet to be cultivated. By 1912, the sparsely populated area had been incorporated and the city fathers appointed the first peace officer, Fred W. Petway, who was one of three marshals to serve the new town. In 1924, the position of police chief was created with the appointment of Fred Garvin. However, it would be many years before a first-class police department would oversee the safety and security of the growing community. This volume tracks a century of social change and dramatic episodes that challenged a long line of dedicated men and women in law enforcement. Each of these professionals raised the bar on the high standard of police department service that operates in this seaside municipality today.

Life is always changing by the falling waters of the Presumpscot. This new photographic history compiled by the members of the Westbrook History 2000 Committee brings to life the deep heritage of an area that has gained strength and spirit from the river that flows through it. Over time, the river has been used as a source of food, recreation, and power for mills. Sadly, it has also been abused with overuse and pollution. It is now being slowly
restored, through legislation, modern technology, and human consideration. This book takes readers on a journey into the days when steamers plied the Presumpscot and life was a bit quieter. From Cumberland Mills and Highland Lake to Duck Pond and Prides' Corner, we view turn-of-the-century schools, homes, trolleys, street scenes, parades, and festivals. We also see where some of Westbrook's earliest residents lived and worked. Images of Frenchtown, Irish Hill, and Scotch Hill vividly show what life was like for the laborers and mill workers in the S.D. Warren and Dana Warp Mills.

Central College

$24.99

The area of Amalthea, better known as Central College, was platted by Timothy Lee in 1816. Situated three miles southeast of Westerville, Central College was built along Big Walnut Creek. A college known as the Blendon Institute was formed in 1832. In 1842, the institute was given to the Presbyterian church to form the Central College of Ohio. However, due to financial struggles, the school—later known as Central College Academy—closed in 1894. The Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association purchased the defunct school property and created the Ohio Home for the Aged and Infirm Deaf; it was the first home of its kind in the state. The village of Central College filled with excitement when the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon and Delaware Railroad was slated to pass through town in 1873. However, the railroad announced that it would instead pass through Westerville, and because of the lack of public transportation through Central College, the town failed to grow.

In 1861, a group of hardy pioneers ascended the "Provo Bench" that overlooks Utah Lake. With dreams of fruit orchards and vegetable fields, they uprooted the sagebrush, dug irrigation canals, and planted crops. These farms were successful, and they helped transform Orem into a dynamic community by the time the railroad arrived. The produce was boxed and shipped across Utah on the Orem Line, and the Provo/Orem area earned the nickname "Garden City of Utah." Incorporated in 1919, Orem was transformed again during World War II when the U.S. government constructed Geneva Steel Mill on the shores of Utah Lake. Blue collar workers joined farmers and ranchers in building a city. Orem supports higher education and is home to Utah Valley University. Although malls and subdivisions have replaced many of the orchards and the steel mill has closed, Orem remains rooted in its past while growing towards its future.

The area claimed in 1833 by the Meacham brothers, who traveled from the east in search of land and opportunities, encompassed parts of present-day Roselle, Medinah, and Cloverdale. The Meacham brothers and those who followed formed an agricultural community that thrived in its location on a major thoroughfare, the Chicago Galena Highway. Retail was an important part of Bloomingdale by the time the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad came through the northern part of Bloomingdale Township in 1873. Settled early by immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and other European countries, Fords was an agricultural community until the twentieth century, when local industry flourished. Fords exhibits vintage photographs of the very early Cutler House, old shops in the business district, local churches, Dalina's Tavern, and the Fairfield Union School. This book is about the people of Sharonville-the folks we read about in the "neighbors" column of a local paper, our grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great grandparents, the human beings inside the uniforms. Sharonville: And Its People shows how different we are from those that lived here 50, 100, or 150 years ago; and yet, how much we are the same. Since its founding in 1788, the town of Sharonville (originally Sharon) has been called home to generations of people who have built homes and businesses, churches and schools, and a vibrant community that will be called home by the generations to come. The story of these people is told here through over 200 photographs from the collection at the Society for Historic Sharonville. As a 21-year-old German immigrant, Franz Huning could not have envisioned his future in New Mexico when, in 1849, he signed on as a bull whacker for a wagon train heading down the Santa Fe Trail. From his beginnings as a clerk in Albuquerque's Old Town, Huning's entrepreneurial talents flourished over the next half-century. He took on the roles of merchant, flour mill operator, and land speculator, helping to secure Albuquerque as a division point with a depot, offices, and major repair shops for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Huning's 700-acre estate, home to the once-legendary but now-demolished Castle Huning, fronted Albuquerque's main thoroughfare midway between Old Town and the bustling new downtown one mile east. It was a front-row seat to the city's development after the flood-prone Rio Grande was stabilized. Hampden

9780738510118

$24.99

Originally part of Springfield's outward commons, Hampden was called Wilbraham and then South Wilbraham until it was incorporated as Hampden in 1878. Its main street parallels the peaceful Scantic River, surrounded by mountains that lend a sense of mystery to this lovely New England village. By harnessing the Scantic's energy, this farming community became a booming mill town in the 1800s. When plans to build a railroad for transporting products from mills and quarries failed, industry collapsed. The town reverted back to farming and later became a bedroom community.

Hampden brings readers back to the days when world-renowned Thornton W. Burgess wrote his Peter Rabbit books beside Laughing Brook and when Maude Tait, pioneer aviatrix whose speed record beat Amelia Earhart's, taught school in Hampden. The book tells the exciting stories of the people and places that formed the town, such as the early workers, businessmen, preachers, and teachers. Included in Hampden are early photographs of parades and plays, picnics and personalities, and the way of life before the advent of modern transportation, communication, and manner of business.

Fork Shoals

9780738590837

$24.99

Tucked away in southern Greenville County and surrounding the Reedy River, Fork Shoals, one of the county's first settlements, is a region that has been witness to an almost forgotten but proud history. Ancient artifacts, most notably a Clovis point, have been unearthed from these Cherokee hunting grounds, and the only Revolutionary War battle in Greenville County was fought nearby. In the late 1700s, a wave of settlers moved to the vicinity, establishing farms and plantations, schools and churches, and shops and mills. Fork Shoals School was one of the first accredited rural high schools in the state, and several of the churches are the oldest of their denomination in the county. Over time, Fork Shoals became unique for farming and textiles, with many individuals working at both. In these pages, the reader will learn about silk growing, early electricity, local communication systems, and textile ball teams and enjoy anecdotes about special people and places while poring over photographs that tell the story of Fork Shoals.
