During the 1900s, Lawrenceburg offered a textbook example of

the things that make the small towns of the Bluegrass Region

culturally and historically unique. The gently rolling topography is

engraved with abandoned channels, caves, sinks, and springs and is

limestone. The ability to use resources provided by the land

determined the lifestyles of area residents prior to and during the

In 1843, LaRue County was named after John LaRue, an early settler in the area. Hodgenville, the county's largest town, was established in 1818 and later became the seat in 1843. LaRue County is best known as the birthplace and childhood home of Abraham Lincoln; he was born on February 12, 1809, at the Sinking Spring Farm. In 1909, in honor of Lincoln's centennial birthday, New York sculptor Adolph A. Weinmann created a life-size statue of the 16th president, which still stands in the Hodgenville square. Firefighting in Hopkinsville

Organized in 1832, the Hopkinsville Union Fire Company represented the first attempt to provide fire protection for the town of Hopkinsville, which had 1,260 residents at that time. Succeeding volunteer groups (called runners) were created through the remainder of the 19th century. By 1900, a paid, professional fire department had been established with the firemen and equipment housed in the old town market house at the intersection of Fifth and Main Streets. Five years later, the City of Hopkinsville completed the new Central Fire Station located on East Ninth Street between Liberty and Clay Streets. In October 1924, the destruction of this building by fire generated widespread comment. A new station was built within the original walls of the burned building. This facility served as the Hopkinsville Fire Station until the department moved to the new Main Station on West First Street in May 1964.

Images of America: Garrard County in World War II depicts the citizens of a small, rural central Kentucky county who served their nation in war-torn areas worldwide and on the home front. Images courtesy of veterans and their families show the sacrifices made and honor those who served. With photographs of all branches of the armed services, the county's war story is told in representative vignettes at numerous fronts. Through interviews, news accounts, and letters, many veterans' stories of courage, humor, and despair come to life. Here at home, patriotic efforts began in 1940 when school children made "bundles for Britain" and continued throughout the war years with residents sacrificing at home to spend every available dime on war bonds. In fact, in 1943, Garrard Countians bought more bonds per capita than citizens in any other Kentucky county. To reward their patriotism and sacrifice, in March 1945, the government commissioned the USS Garrard, an attack transport ship. A member of the crew donated to the county's historical society photos of the ship and his diary. Survivors of the USS Garrard held a reunion here in 2002.
