Greeks in Tarpon Springs
9781467115469
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%These pictorial images of Greek heritage illustrate the people and events that have shaped the culture and history of Tarpon Springs.
Beginning in 1905, large numbers of Greeks from the Dodecanese and Saronic Gulf islands settled in Tarpon Springs to work in the sponge business. They significantly expanded the industry and changed Tarpon Springs forever. Greektown flourished with residences, stores, churches, restaurants, and recreational facilities stretching from the sponge docks to downtown. Sponge fishing and related activities served as the economic base for the community. By 1913, as many as half of Tarpon Springs residents were reputedly Greek, and many businesses displayed both Greek and American flags. Today, Tarpon Springs' Greek community preserves a strong ethnic and maritime heritage. While some major US cities have a larger Greek population, no other has a greater percentage with Greek heritage than Tarpon Springs.

Scotland County

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%River, Scotland County boasts features reminiscent
of the country for which it was named. But the county has
held fast to much more than kilts and bagpipes; its Scottish
heritage is entwined with aspects of other cultures to produce

a relatively young county, having been formed in 1899 from

Carolina became a royal colony in 1729, Scottish Highlanders
were already living in the area.
Scotland County serves as a testimony to the lives and
experiences of county residents, past and present. Local heroes,
important streets, businesses, schools, and churches, which have
all helped to shape the county's identity, come to life through
word and image within the pages of this volume. Longtime
residents and newcomers alike are sure to find themselves
captivated by the photographs and accompanying captions that
celebrate the county's coming of age.

The job of carrying out many of the proposals in the plan fell to the Civilian Conservation Corps, a Depression-era federal agency that combined work relief efforts with conservation work. The laborers, known as the CCC boys, developed the layout of the park from 1933 to 1941. Much of their work remains and is still used by visitors today.

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%Location, location, location: this catchphrase speaks to a dominant theme in the shaping of Cecil County's history.
Cecil County is at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, with rivers defining two boundaries and the famous Mason-Dixon Line delineating the northern and eastern boundaries. Close to major cities and known as the most rural county along the northeast corridor of I-95, Cecil has held on to its agricultural heritage while at the same time accommodating the flow of trade, tourists, recreational visitors, dignitaries, military supplies, armies, the navy, and romantic couples ready to be married. The county has added its own agricultural products, natural resources, industrial goods, and citizens to the flow of traffic on the county's historic waterways and highways. Separated from Baltimore County in 1674, Cecil was a few decades from celebrating its bicentennial when the first itinerant photographer unpacked his equipment at the courthouse and began the process of preserving the county's history through images.

These stalwart men and women faced with determination the challenges of natural disasters and economic uncertainty and carved their prosperous community out of the harsh Florida landscape. Prominent people, such as the McNab brothers, George L. Blount, the Garner family, George and Mary Butler, Blanche Ely, the Rolle family, and others, took part in the developing tale of Pompano Beach, while local landmarks and events, such as the Kester Cottages, the State Farmers' Market, Pompano Harness Park, Goodyear Blimp, the Holiday Boat Parade, the Broward County Fair, and Pioneer Days, helped to shape the area's rich heritage. Featuring over 200 vintage photographs of such people and places, this pictorial retrospective captures, in word and image, the scenes of Pompano Beach's unique history.
Druid Hills
9781467103688
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%A collection of photographs that highlight historic Druid Hills in Atlanta, Georgia and the history behind the influential suburb.
Three remarkable people were responsible for the beginnings of Atlanta's historic Druid Hills. The first was entrepreneur Joel Hurt, who having already experienced success with his rail-served development of Inman Park set his sights on a second community. With remarkable vision, Hurt hired renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. to plan his new subdivision. Druid Hills would be Olmsted's last design and also his only one in the Deep South. Hurt eventually sold the land for his subdivision to a group of wealthy and influential businessmen, headed by Coca-Cola owner Asa Griggs Candler. The men retained Olmsted as landscape architect and planner. The story of historic Druid Hills weaves the genius of America's father of landscape architecture with the acumen of the owners of the Druid Hills Corporation. With its central linear park, curvilinear streets, and an abundance of trees, Druid Hills succeeded in becoming an ideal suburb that eventually became home to the civic and business lions of Atlanta.
