Since opening in 1980, Sesame Place® theme park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, has been the Northeast's premiere destination for fun, learning, and entertainment for children and adults alike.

This wonderful playland has seen immense change and growth from opening day, ever adapting like Sesame Street® itself to engage the newest generation of kids. Here, the original Muppets™ from Sesame Street created by Jim Henson, such as Big Bird, Grover, and Cookie Monster, as well as the newer residents, such as Elmo, Zoe, Murray, and Abby Cadabby, come right out of the television and into attractions, shows, parades, meet-and-greets, and more.

Elmwood Park Zoo was established in 1924 when roughly 16 acres of land and a small group of animals were donated to the borough of Norristown. Although the early years of the zoo were more akin to a small farm, it has gone through an extensive expansion during the past few decades. This expansion and the continued revitalization of Elmwood Park Zoo include some notable residents, such as the zoo's owl, who has become the mascot of Temple University, and its bald eagle, a sideline regular for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. The zoo today, with new features including a zip line and a giraffe exhibit, looks to the future, with plans for even more exhibits, a new restaurant, and an additional 20 acres yet to be developed.

Nestled along a horseshoe curve of the Monongahela River in the Mid-Monongahela Valley of southwestern Pennsylvania, Monessen was settled in the mid-1800s, though it was not formally established and named until 1898, then chartered as a city in 1923. Throughout the 20th century, Monessen was known mainly for its industry, especially steel and wire. The city served as a site for Pittsburgh Steel until the decline of the steel industry. That has not stopped the caring and determined residents of Monessen from trying to recapture the vibrant culture of the city. This book reflects on the history of the city through the second half of the 20th century, showcasing how current residents have led Monessen into the 21st century.

In the mid-1900s, Coatesville was a manufacturing gemstone amid the rolling farmland of Chester County. It was home to Lukens Steel, maker of the steel "trees" that became the first nine stories of New York City's World Trade Center. Retailers such as JC Penney, JJ Newberry, and Woolworth's were large employers serving Coatesville citizens and visitors from neighboring counties. By the mid-1970s, Coatesville's commerce was deeply affected by the influx of shopping malls and big-box stores. Thanks to locally minded developers and community advocates, Coatesville's revival is very real and centers on the arts, boutique retailers, faith-based progress, and handshakes. Coatesville marks its centennial in 2015.

Lawrence Park Township and Wesleyville Borough are suburbs of Erie, Pennsylvania, and both communities are proud of their comfortable residences, many churches, parks, and business districts. Wesleyville grew along Buffalo Road, while Lawrence Park was developed by the General Electric Company a century later. Four Mile Creek, with its picturesque wanderings, is shared by both communities, and local legend suggests that it might have played a part in the Underground Railroad and the activities of rumrunners. In the early 1960s, the rival schools of the two communities merged to form the Iroquois School District. Amazingly, in 1965-1966, the first year of the merged district, the football team won the Erie County league championship. Many more accolades have come to Iroquois students for athletics, music, art, and intellectual achievements, and it is certain that they will continue, so "Roll on Big I."

After incorporation in 1866, Scranton demonstrated an indomitable spirit that made it the Electric City and the Anthracite Capital of the World. Nestled in the scenic Lackawanna River Valley, Scranton carried that spirit through the changing economic landscape of the mid-20th century as its coal, railroad, and textile industries declined. In a cityscape that recalls its past, Scranton continues to find creative uses for its iconic structures. The community of Scranton embraces growth and change while celebrating its rich heritage with traditions like trips to the Saturday farmers' market at the historic Iron Furnaces, rides along the old Laurel Line trolley tracks to a RailRiders baseball game, celebrations of rich ethnic heritage at festivals throughout the year, and many more.

York experienced great changes following World War II. People began moving from the city to the suburbs, and many department stores, like Bear's, Wiest's, Jack's, and Gregory's, closed. Long-standing companies such as AMF and York Air Conditioning were sold or moved, while banks, industries, and businesses merged. The York County Shopping Center opened on the East End, attracting customers who had formerly shopped downtown. WSBA TV went on the air in 1952, starting a new era in communication and a business empire that still has a strong presence today. The band Live grew from a group of local high school students to well-known musicians that graced the cover of Rolling Stone. Jeff Koons became one of the most celebrated artists in the world, Kim Bracey became the first African American mayor, and York businessman Tom Wolf became governor. York continues to celebrate its rich heritage as the "Factory Capital of the World."

With events such as La Corsa dei Ceri - commonly referred to as St. Ubaldo Day - in Jessup on Memorial Day Weekend and La Festa Italiana on downtown Scranton's Courthouse Square over Labor Day Weekend, every town in the county with an Italian population has its own story. Whether the people can trace their origins to Guardia or Gubbio, Felitto or Perugia, the Italians of Lackawanna County all share one thing in common: a strong sense of pride in their ethnic origins.

About 20,000 years ago, the late Wisconsinan glaciation reached its maximum extent. Glacial deposits identify the moraine, or farthest area covered by the glacier. Muddy Creek was a north-flowing stream that was blocked by the south-advancing glacier, forming a huge lake that lasted until the glacier dam began to retreat. The lake rapidly drained, eventually exposing the vast Muddy Creek basin. Dr. Frank Preston envisioned recreating the ancient glacial lake and worked with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to begin the project that became 16,725-acre Moraine State Park. Its centerpiece, man-made Lake Arthur and the surrounds, provide outstanding outdoor recreation and relaxation opportunities.
