Natchez, Mississippi, attracts thousands of visitors annually. One look through these pages and it is easy to see why. Beautiful exterior shots, rare interior photographs, and moving descriptions capture the essence of one of the largest and best-preserved collections of antebellum architecture in the country. Natchez truly is a living museum.

King's Tavern, circa 1789, is believed to be the oldest building in Natchez and still operates as a tavern and restaurant. The stately Greek Revival Stanton Hall occupies an entire city block and is considered one of America's finest house museums. Longwood, the largest octagonal house in the country, stands unfinished today because Northern workers stopped in their tracks and left for home at the outbreak of the Civil War.

For those fortunate enough to experience this bastion of the Old South or for those who hope to visit one day, The Majesty of Natchez makes the perfect memento or gift book. It presents the grandeur of this quintessential Southern town in all its radiant splendor.

Pelican's acclaimed Majesty Series takes detailed looks at the unique architecture of historic cities and geographic areas throughout the South. The nine titles currently in the ever-growing series include Colonial Williamsburg, Savannah, and New Orleans.

Majesty of Williamsburg

Williamsburg was one of the most important cities of eighteenth-century America. Capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1780, it was a political and economic center especially before and during the American Revolution. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., recognized its status in 1926 and led the way in restoring the town to its original splendor. Today, Colonial Williamsburg attracts millions of visitors each year to its authentically recreated eighteenth-century village. Full of historically significant, beautiful buildings, Williamsburg is a wonderful place to explore. Now you can walk the streets and view the town without even leaving your chair with The Majesty of Colonial Williamsburg . The main houses, public buildings, and taverns plus museums, crafts, and stores are represented here in more than two hundred full-color photographs. The homes are elegantly furnished in period style, which is shown here in rich detail. The book also showcases Carter s Grove, a plantation built in 1751 and located eight miles away, and two buildings from the College of William and Mary. In addition to documenting Williamsburg in pictures, the author recounts the town's history. The Majesty of Colonial Williamsburg is the eighth volume in Pelican s acclaimed Majesty architecture series. Anyone who has been to Williamsburg in person will treasure this photographic remembrance; anyone else will simply enjoy seeing this lovely, historically accurate village up close and learning more about colonial American life. Peter Beney has been a professional photographer for more than forty years. This is his third book in the Majesty series for Pelican; he has also written and photographed The Majesty of Savannah and The Majesty of Charleston.

The Majesty of the French Quarter

"highly recommended for architecture, photography, and history collections everywhere." --Library Journal

"McCaffety knows how to capture the fleeting beauty of a moment." --Times Picayune

For many, the French Quarter is New Orleans, yet how much do they really know about the Vieux Carr? Truman Capote wrote, "Of all secret cities, New Orleans . . . is the most secretive. . . . [Its] architecture deliberately concocted to camouflage, to mask, as at a Mardi Gras Ball, the lives of those born to live among these protective edifices."

Through striking photographs and polished prose, The Majesty of the French Quarter opens the locked door and invites readers to discover a multitude of hidden marvels. Among the discovered gems is the 1828 Bourbon Street mansion of Lindy Boggs, U. S. ambassador to the Vatican and former congresswoman. Pictured are many such homes' secret, overgrown gardens where, noted Capote, "mimosa and camellias contrast color, and lazing lizards, flicking their forked tongues, race along palm fronds." Also featured are rare glimpses of the antique-filled and artfully decorated interiors of some of the Quarter's most majestic homes, including that of New Orleans novelist Julie Smith.

While this series has examined New Orleans as a whole and the city's Garden District in particular, the French Quarter has quietly kept her secrets to herself-until now.
