From Wilmington, Fayetteville, Greenville, New Bern, Elizabeth City, Wilson, Kinston, Goldsboro, and many points in between, this book offers a brief look at many of the historical asylums and sanatoriums, as well as temporary hospitals of war and disaster, in Eastern North Carolina. It shows what they were and what they became as they transformed into the great hospitals of today. Many of these old buildings have long since been torn down or reused in a variety of ways seldom connected to their past. This book provides a glimpse of these great buildings, several of their artifacts, and images of what health care used to be in Eastern North Carolina and the role medicine has played as the region has grown.

Breeding fine horses has been both big business and pastime for Middle Tennesseans since settlers first entered the Cumberland Valley during the American Revolution. The fertile pastures and mild climate of the area lent itself to horse breeding, and the populace embraced the benefits. Horses functioned as the technology that plowed fields, moved goods and people, and serviced the military. Horse racetracks dotted the landscape, and a person's social status sometimes rested on the possession of fine horses and good horsemanship. This combination of culture and geography in Middle Tennessee gave rise to some of the most celebrated horse breeders in the nation.

In 1935, American industrialist Alfred I. duPont sparked what would become a model of pediatric medical and research excellence. With an endowed trust, his widow, Jessie Ball duPont, established the Nemours Foundation. In 1940, the foundation opened the Alfred I. duPont Institute, a small pediatric orthopedic hospital on the duPont estate in Wilmington, Delaware. Today, duPont's legacy lives on at Nemours Children's Health, the nation's only multistate pediatric health care network. With two children's hospitals in Delaware and Florida, nearly 100 pediatric care locations, an office of policy and prevention in Washington, DC, and award-winning patient education initiatives such as KidsHealth.org, Nemours has touched the lives of millions worldwide.

For over 60 years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has worked tirelessly to address infectious diseases and other health hazards. Through the vision of Dr. Joseph W. Mountin, the Communicable Disease Center was created in 1946 as the successor to Malaria Control in War Areas (MCWA), a division of the Public Health Service based in Atlanta. The new agency, CDC, was charged with monitoring and controlling malaria, typhus, and other infectious diseases nationwide. Known today as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is recognized as the nation's premier health promotion, prevention, and preparedness agency and a global leader in public health. Nearly two decades after it closed, the South Carolina State Hospital continues to hold a palpable mystique in Columbia and throughout the state.

Founded in 1821 as the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum, it housed, fed and treated thousands of patients incapable of surviving on their own. The patient population in 1961 eclipsed 6,600, well above its listed capacity of 4,823, despite an operating budget that ranked forty-fifth out of the forty-eight states. By the mid-1990s, the patient population had fallen under 700, and the hospital had become a symbol of captivity, horror and chaos. Author William Buchheit details this history through the words and interviews of those who worked on the iconic campus.

Over the last decade Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY, has put a new face on the concept of equine aftercare.

When Michael Blowen first dreamed of creating Old Friends, he envisioned a place where Thoroughbred stallions could retire with dignity following their racing or breeding careers. He also wanted people to visit the iconic horses.

In 2003, Old Friendsopened on leased land with a miniature horse named Little Silver Charm, a gelding named Invigorate and a mare named Narrow Escape. Today, the two-hundred-plus-acre farm in Georgetown has more than 160 retired Thoroughbred stallions, geldings and mares, including two Kentucky Derbywinners. It even welcomed two satellite farms, one in New York and one at Kentucky Downsracetrack.
