Los Angeles, California

9780738508122

$23.99

Los Angeles was founded in 1781 as one of the two original Spanish pueblos in California. At the time of statehood in 1851, Los Angeles began to reconsider its cow town condition, and gradually transformed an American city into the magnificent metropolis we know today. Drawn from the collections of the University of Southern California, the Los Angeles Public Library, and the Los Angeles City Archives, Jeffrey Samudio and Portia Lee record the history of a community that established itself culturally as it grew exponentially. By 1945, the small town that had begun with 28 square miles in the late 19th century had grown to 450 square miles through almost 100 annexations. Businessmen constructed a downtown streetscape whose architecture elicited envy in other cities, hotels catered to visitors with such enthusiasm that guests eventually returned with ambitious schemes of their own, and the construction of an elaborate freeway system suddenly made Los Angeles a drive-in city.

Mount Lowe Railway

9780738547534

$24.99

Opened with great fanfare on July 4, 1893, the Mount Lowe Incline Railway was hailed as Earth's Grandest Mountain Ride. Built by Civil War balloonist Thaddeus S. C. Lowe and railroad engineer David J. Macpherson in the mountains above Altadena and Pasadena in Los Angeles County, this funicular was operated for 43 years and served nearly four million passengers from around the world. Where else could one find four hotels, an observatory, the world's largest searchlight, a dance hall, miniature golf, a zoo, horseback riding, tennis, and snowcapped peaks, all within a day's journey from the Pacific Ocean and downtown Los Angeles? The San Gabriel Mountains continue to be a great natural resource and recreational escape for many Angelenos, but the spectacular railway lives on only in these vintage photographs.

Huntington Beach, California

9780738518787

$24.99

Incorporated in 1909, Huntington Beach remained a sleepy seaside town until the city's legendary oil boom in the 1920s. Wells sprang up overnight, and in less than a month, the city's population more than doubled. As the area developed culturally through the decades, the once tiny farming community increased its size with 25 miles of annexations to become one of Southern California's major tourist destinations. Pictured here in nearly 200 vintage photographs is the evolution of this small seaside village into a classic, Southern California beach city, known as Surf City to nearly a million tourists a year. Showcased here are images acquired from city records, including shots of the famous Huntington Beach Pier as it evolved over the century, rare amateur photos of one of the largest gushers in city history, vintage beach scenes, rarely seen historic aerial views, images of the turn of the century Tent City, the infamous flood of 1938, and nostalgic shots of the Saltwater Plunge.

In this collection, Tim Grobaty remembers growing up in the fast-growing new neighborhoods of East Long Beach, the beloved places downtown that were part of the city's mid-twentieth-century fabric and a few obscure spots in the margins. Long Beach's memory lane includes the dearly departed restaurants the Golden Lantern in Los Altos and Rusty's in the Wrigley District, the Circle and Los Altos Drive-Ins, great concerts of the 1970s in the arena and auditorium and the shoppers' paradises of Uncle Al's Toy Korral in the Plaza and Buffum's downtown. Join Press-Telegram columnist Tim Grobaty as he records Long Beach residents' recollections and taps his own boomer-years memories.

Grass Valley

9780738546971

$24.99

Grass Valley was named for its spring-fed meadows, but its history springs from deep below the soil. An immeasurable wealth of gold lay in ancient river courses, embedded in quartz, or scattered capriciously in surface gravel. Vibrantly entrepreneurial since its inception, Grass Valley echoed with the roar of stamp mills crushing gold-bearing quartz 24 hours a day, every day, for decades. Its mines produced $350 million, and millions more are thought to be buried beneath the modern city. Grass Valley's wealth drew flamboyant stars like Lola Montez and gold-camp-urchin-turned-star Lotta Crabtree. It was here that philosopher Josiah Royce was born and Cherokee writer Yellow Bird (John Rollin Ridge) lived his final days. Grass Valley was often the subject of Alonzo Delano's tales of the gold rush, and more recently, it was the setting and inspiration for Wallace Stegner's best seller Angle of Repose.

Railroads of Nevada County

9781467128452

$24.99

The Central Pacific Railroad was the first railroad to enter Nevada County as it constructed eastward in 1865. At the base of the eastern slope of Donner Pass, the railroad established a construction camp, now known as Truckee, before following the Truckee River to the Nevada state line. Truckee became home to expansive locomotive facilities for helper locomotives on trains westbound over Donner Pass after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Through the end of the 19th century, additional railroads were constructed, bringing the outside world closer to the remote corners of the county. Railroads like the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Nevada County Traction Company served the gold rush–era boomtowns of Grass Valley and Nevada City. Lumber companies like the Towle Brothers and the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company brought rail into the forests and filled the demand for lumber throughout the region.

Clarke Historical Museum

Eureka and Humboldt County

9780738518725

$24.99

The cry amongst the redwoods-Eureka!-was the shout heard from early pioneers in 1850 as they came to settle in Humboldt County. Discovery of gold permanently changed the area's history, and eventually lead to the extraction of Humboldt's other natural resource: the red gold of its forests. Captured here in over 200 vintage photographs is the pictorial history of this bountiful county and its residents.

As the gold fever faded in the late 1800s, Humboldt County's primary source of industry became the lumbering of its vast redwoods. Pictured here are the men and machines that felled, transported, and milled the lumber, as well as photographs of the elegant Victorian mansions of the industry's lumber barons, such as William Carson. Weaving the history of Humboldt County together are the stories of its earliest residents, including the Native American tribes, fevered Gold Rushers, the early Chinese community, railroad workers, shipyard sailors, and industrious farming families, all of whom created the foundation it prospers on today.

Monterey County's North Coast and Coastal Valleys

9780738546773

$24.99

Fog billows gently across Monterey County's north coast, a white blanket tucked up against the hills of Aromas. Beneath its protective shroud, fishing boats gently rock, artichokes thrive, and shorebirds build nests along Elkhorn Slough. In this muffled landscape of fertile loam crisscrossed by sloughs, settlers built four distinct communities. Juan B. Castro subdivided his family's rancho to found Castroville, now known as the artichoke capital of the world. Captain Moss and Cato Vierra opened a port, a sea gate to a premier agricultural area. Moss Landing later hosted whalers, a salt works, canneries, and a power generation plant. John Porter's ranch was a safe haven for Chinese immigrants. Their apple-drying businesses spearheaded Pajaro's development as a central rail-shipping point with several produce-packing companies. Aromas pioneers judged their valley well suited for growing apricots. Drifts of white blossoms buried Aromas in spring, while summer's vistas were golden with trays of drying apricots.

The Russian River

9780738520605

$24.99

The Russian River begins in the hills of Mendocino County and meanders past Cloverdale and Healdsburg on its way to the sea. But when locals say The Russian River or even just The River, they're talking about the region of redwoods and riverbanks in Sonoma County between Forestville and Jenner, celebrated since the late 19th century as a paradise for camping and fishing. Captured here in over 200 vintage photographs are the area's settlers, stores, festivals, resorts, and beaches-attractions that have drawn Bay Area tourists for over a century.

Native Americans camped and fished along the lower River, but it was the potential for lumbering that drew the first White settlers and in the 1870s led to the building of railroads. Towns formed, resorts and businesses sprang up, and the River fell into a seasonal rhythm of catering to summer visitors. Spanning over 150 years, this book documents the events and attractions of the lower Russian River, including the towns of Forestville, Rio Nido, Guerneville, Monte Rio, Duncans Mills, Cazadero, and Jenner.

A flood of explorers from all over the world poured into the Lower Sacramento River Delta, and soon towns were settled on the banks of the river. As settlement flourished, each new community gave birth to stories of early pioneers, shipwrecks, murder, robbery, vigilante justice, bootleggers and more. Here for the first time in this remarkable collection, local historian and author Philip Pezzaglia reveals the true stories behind some of the tales that have passed through generations, becoming legends of the Delta.

The Stagecoach in Northern California

9781626192546

$23.99

New England stagemen followed thousands of bedazzled gold rushers out west in 1849, carving out the first public overland transportation routes in California. Daring drivers like Hank Monk navigated treacherous terrain, while entrepreneurs such as James Birch, Jared Crandall and Louis McLane founded stagecoach companies traveling from Stockton to the Oregon border and over the formidable Sierra Nevada. Stagecoaches hauling gold from isolated mines to big-city safes were easy targets for highwaymen like Black Bart. Road accidents could end in disaster--coaches even tumbled down mountainsides. Journey back with author Cheryl Anne Stapp to an era before the railroad and automobile arrived and discover the wild history of stagecoach travel in California.

Gardena Heritage Committee

Gardena

9780738546766

$24.99

From its beginnings around 1880, Gardena was noted for its cultural mix. Its Spanish rancho-era name perfectly described the community's regionally famous vegetable and strawberry fields, which were primarily tended by settlers of Japanese descent, in Los Angeles County's South Bay area. The city of Gardena, incorporated in 1930, remains one of the nation's most ethnically balanced communities, drawing visitors worldwide to its diverse cultural activities. For nearly 40 years, Gardena was the only place in the county to have legalized gambling, and the city's unique history includes the fact that more public poker tables once existed here than in the rest of the United States combined. Located at the nexus of four major freeways, the City of Opportunity thrives today with more than 60,000 people on six square miles only a short distance from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

James Lenhoff

Oroville

9780738518541

$24.99

Oroville, California, has always been a land of innovation and resource. While the Feather River was dredged for millions in gold in the late-19th century, the climate of Oroville was discovered to be well suited to growing oranges and olives, as well for a viable logging industry. One of America's first electric railroads passed through the town, and in 1937, the Feather River Highway stretched all the way to Reno. In 1968, the largest dam in the nation was constructed, and that feat of engineering provided electricity to a large number of California residents. Captured here in over 200 vintage images, James Lenhoff shows readers a California town that boomed with the Gold Rush and today remains a thriving community. Showcasing photographs from personal and community collections, the images in this book portray the residents that made Oroville what it is today, from the famous miners to the local farmers. Here are stunning vintage and rarely seen photographs of Oroville, including the foothills, the Feather River Canyon, and the building of its famous dam.

Petaluma

9780738518992

$24.99

The river comes in and the river goes back out-this was the central fact that dictated the ebb and flow of life in early Petaluma. This river provided a natural link with San Francisco, and Petaluma became a ready-made market and eventually a prosperous trading hub. Captured here in over 200 vintage images is the story of this once fledgling creek-side village, and its evolution into one of northern California's thriving commercial centers. As waves of American settlers besieged the area following the Gold Rush, the early cabins and shanties gave way to warehouses and storefronts. Pictured here are the elements that made Petaluma prosperous: the banks, parks, bustling hotels, lively businesses, and stately Victorian homes. From the first steamer Gold plowing its way with the region's wares down to San Pablo Bay, to the nation's first pioneering commercial hatchery, Images of America: Petaluma captures the spirit and ingenuity of this riverside town and its residents.

Kimberly Wooten

Sutter Creek

9780738546865

$24.99

Between 1848 and 1849, whispers of gold in California became a roar. The gold rush was on, and thousands established rough camps in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Among these camps, nestled in a small valley, was Sutter Creek. The town is named for the famous John Sutter, whose discovery of gold at Coloma started the rush. And though many gold-mining tent cities died out over time, Sutter Creek transitioned to a solid community with wide streets, two-story businesses, and beautiful homes. Blacksmiths, foundries, and other industries provided services to the ever-deepening mines, among the world's richest. Settlers used the ideal soil and climate to produce crops and livestock, gradually replacing head frames and hoist works, as the last mine finally closed in the 1950s. Thousands still journey to Sutter Creek, some for gold, but most are attracted by the rich heritage still visible along historic Main Street.

Skiing at Lake Tahoe

9780738589060

$24.99

Organized ski racing in America started near Lake Tahoe in the 1860s when gold miners rode 15-foot boards that reached speeds near 100 miles per hour. By 1895, residents of Truckee had started the nation's first winter carnival west of the Rocky Mountains and soon built the largest ski jump in California. Today's Lake Tahoe, with significant annual snowfall, has become home to the largest concentration of ski resorts on the continent. Places like Mount Rose, Squaw Valley (home of the 1960 Winter Olympics), Sugar Bowl, Heavenly Valley, Homewood, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood, Diamond Peak, Donner Ski Ranch, Granlibakken, and Northstar-at-Tahoe have seen skiing styles, sports, and fashions churn through the decades, while now gone resorts, such as Edelweiss and White Hills Ski Resort, echo the memories of yesterday's skiers through the pines.

San Diego's Little Italy

9780738547800

$24.99

Italian immigrants settled along San Diego's waterfront in the early 1900s and formed the Italian Colony, a tightly knit community that provided refuge, shared culture, and heritage. Extended families, new businesses, and church traditions formed the foundation for a lasting social code. It was no coincidence that the area would become known as Little Italy—it was exactly that for its inhabitants—a home away from their native land. But by the mid-1960s, changes brought by
war and urban modernization began to unravel the community. Take a compelling journey through this unique immigrant enclave. Vivid images and descriptive captions highlight essential elements of this community, such as labor and longing, fishing and family, ritual and revitalization. Through photographs contributed by local community members, this volume traces the evolution of a humble fishing village into the chic urban neighborhood that is Little Italy today.

Encinitas

9780738546650

$24.99

Through four generations, back to 1906 when German patriarch Albert Ecke originally settled in California, the Ecke Ranch name has been synonymous with the crimson poinsettia. With the transplanting of the Ecke business into the heart of the sleepy township of Encinitas in 1923, the area became known as the Flower Capital of the World. Now a diverse 20-year-old city embracing five distinct communities, the split personality of the area reveals itself as an eclectic mix of suburban and rural, historic and contemporary, laid-back and energetic. Nestled between the Batiquitos Lagoon to the north and the San Elijo Lagoon to the south, Encinitas dominates six miles of spectacular San Diego County coastline. From the pioneer Hammond family to famed skateboarder Tony Hawk, Encinitas is a notable city with memorable citizens.

The Tiburon Peninsula

9780738546513

$24.99

The Tiburon Peninsula was once a part of the vast El Rancho Corte Madera Del Presidio, owned by generations of the pioneering Reed family, whose dairies colonized the rolling grasslands and willow groves of Tiburon, Belvedere, and Strawberry. Nearby Angel Island was militarized during the Civil War, later supporting an immigration station, and finally, a state historic park. Tiburon became the steaming, smoking terminus of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, with ferries and trains dominating its industry for over 80 years until the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge signaled the end of the rail era. Slowly regaining its original serenity, the peninsula attracted urban refugees seeking a quiet haven by the bay, and new upscale residential neighborhoods and tourist magnets gradually filled in the gentle landscape.

Chinese in Tehama County

9781467161442

$24.99

Nineteenth-century Chinese pioneers voyaged across the vast oceans to reach the last steamboat stop in the 旄舝 Gold Mountain, bringing centuries of wisdom from China’s ancient civilization.

Tehama County played a crucial role in shaping California’s early statehood. Its fertile terrain presented ample opportunities to succeed. Despite harsh discriminatory laws and racially driven tunnel folklore to perpetuate a negative narrative, five original families— Foey (Wong), 謯 Chew (Yuen), 鄺 Fong, 衒 On (Liu), and 蠊 Chin—made Red Bluff their permanent home, thriving as merchants and productive citizens. Individuals like Dr. Chew Yuen and Bo Do Hong operated traditional Chinese medicine practices throughout America with Red Bluff as their headquarters. Tehama County blended cultures, with its most distinguishable townsmen attending an annual Chinese and American banquet in Red Bluff’s Chinatown, merging the two cultures together. The deep bonds formed would culminate into a powerful petition by 20 influential leaders in support of the Chew family, who were detained at Angel Island in 1916, proving that Tehama County valued the Chinese community. This single act of kindness set the stage for a 20th-century Chinese American pioneer to be born, Dr. Kenneth Kendall Chew, and his research in aquaculture would change the world.

The Helen and Joe Chew Foundation has selected rare images from its collection and invited Chinese American descendants to narrate their origin stories, preserving the legacy of these pioneering families for future generations.

Karen Sorensen

Albany

9780738547671

$24.99

Located directly across San Francisco Bay from the famous Golden Gate, the small city of Albany has a history far larger than its size would suggest. Just one-and-a-half-miles square, the Albany area has been
the home of many diverse people and interests. The first inhabitants were the Huchiun Indians, followed by the Peralta family and their vast Rancho San Antonio. The Gold Rush brought new settlers and
dynamite manufacturers, an incompatible pairing that could not last. Albany's population swelled after the great 1906 earthquake, when many San Franciscans moved to the East Bay. By the 1920s, new homes built
by well-known developers like C. M. MacGregor attracted many more families. During World War II, Albany's population expanded yet again with the influx of shipyard workers housed at Codornices Village, now known as University Village. Albany has evolved to keep pace with modern times but also has maintained much of its small-town, familyfriendly
character, a combination that makes it one of the most soughtafter locations along the East Bay shore.

Napa County Wineries

9780738520575

$24.99

Situated in one of the most beautiful valleys in the state, the Napa Valley Wine Country is home to many of California's premiere wineries. As the Native California population of the area declined, more and more of the land was transformed into an agricultural community, with viticulture quickly winning out. One of the unique features that has been defining California's wine history from the earliest days of its Spanish heritage has been both the variation of the vintages and the vintners. One need only to read the names of these visionaries and wineries to gain a sense of the diversity: Beringer, Far Niente, Beaulieu, Charles Krug, and Inglenook. The picturesque setting of the roaming vineyards, along with the attractive quality of the estates and tasting rooms, has made the Napa Valley wineries one of the most popular and fast-growing tourist destinations in the state of California. In this new book, America's most celebrated wine-producing region is presented for visitors and wine connoisseurs alike, using over 200 vintage images to showcase the area's heritage, Golden Age, and incredible expansion. Alongside these photographs are collages of the famous wine labels and illustrated maps.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department

9780738546636

$24.99

The largest county in the continental United States has seen its share of colorful pursuits of suspects and fugitives, including the search for the last Native American in the United States to be tracked to his tragic end by a lawman's posse: Willie Boy at Ruby Mountain. San Bernardino County also was the setting for the shoot-outs at Baldy Mesa and Lytle Creek. Yet gunplay lore is only one aspect of the epic of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Today the department deploys nearly 5,000 salaried and volunteer employees to protect and serve its 20,186 square miles of deserts, mountains, forests, and increasingly urban areas. This original cow-county sheriff's office went through many developments that are detailed in these vintage photographs–sheriffs' administrations, equipment, investigations, and other exploits–all culled from the department's archives, private collections, the California Room of the San Bernardino Public Library, and the San Bernardino Pioneer Historical Society.

Cemeteries of the Eastern Sierra

9780738547862

$24.99

California's Eastern Sierra region, encompassing Inyo and Mono Counties, is a paradise of striking contrasts and beauty. Early settlers came to this area—now known chiefly for recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, and skiing—for its mining and agricultural prospects. Towns like Bodie, Lundy, and Keeler rose with the promise of quick riches but failed when the promise dimmed. Throughout this unique landscape are sprinkled the poignant resting places of early pioneers. Reflecting the diversity of the natural setting, the area's cemeteries range from the Mono County Cemetery overlooking Mono Lake to the overgrown cemetery at the Civil War–era Fort Independence to the garden cemeteries of Bishop. The monuments in these cemeteries, along with the beautiful country that surrounds them, honor the men and women who once carved lives out of this rugged wilderness.

Glendora

9780738508269

$24.99

Growing up under the Spanish mission system, much of Glendora's vibrant history is founded on the sweat of the farmers, ranchers, and entrepreneurs who tempered the land and made it what it is today. Author David Landers captures the history of Glendora and the surrounding area through over 200 vintage images, from its early hacendados days to its glory as one of the nation's largest citrus producers. Easterner Henry Dalton came to the Glendora area in 1843, and, capitalizing on the revolutionary troubles that California was embroiled in with Mexico, created a community of ranches, farms, vineyards, and tanneries. The 1870s brought many new settlers, including some of the future leaders of the city that would be called Glendora: Cullen, Bender, La Fetra, and Warren. Chicago industrialist George Whitcomb bought over 200 acres, and the city of Glendora was finally established. Pictured here are some the earliest photographs of the region, including images of the Santa Fe Railroad that established the citrus industry in Glendora, the Glendora Fruit Association and the families that diligently worked for it, the packing houses, buildings, and early residents.

Golden Memories of the Redwood Empire

9780738518732

$24.99

The high-tech paradise just north of San Francisco, known as the Redwood Empire, was once a land of vineyards, chicken ranches, orchards, and dairies. Using their own words and vintage photographs, here are the stories of the area's residents and their 100 years of history, from the lost glitter of the Gold Rush to end of World War II. The stories recalled here come from the reflections of the people who kept their towns and farms running on a daily basis. Among the voices heard in these chapters are Healdsburg's Ferguson family, pioneer survivors of the westward trail, and David Wharff, who brought the first chickens to Sonoma County, helping create the World's Egg Basket. Through the great Santa Rosa earthquake of 1906, to the devastating flu epidemic of World War I, to the Santa Rosa-Petaluma Big Game riot of 1943, these diary, interview, and newspaper accounts cover a century of rich history in the Redwood Empire.

Rockridge

9780738547992

$24.99

The spirited Oakland neighborhood of Rockridge has been spotlighted in the national media twice in recent years. Hard-hit by a disastrous fire and named a top livable neighborhood by a national magazine, the north Oakland neighborhood has had a diverse and eventful history. Early booms in commerce and population pushed Oakland city boundaries east and north through farmland, toward the university town of Berkeley, and the neighborhood of Rockridge was formed. Shaped by its farms, homes, streetcars, interurban trains, shops, markets, movie houses, a quarry, and Oakland's first reservoir, Rockridge's story is one of hard labor in the quarry and the practice of the fine arts, of ethnic markets and the short-lived grand estates of mining tycoons, of the taming of wild creeks and the subdivision of open spaces. The town witnessed experiments in planned development, the effect of freeways and rapid transit, changes brought by the Depression and World War II, the transformation of College Avenue, and trends in home building that today allow the landscape to reveal Rockridge's history.

Napa

9780738518695

$24.99

Though world-famous for its miles of superior vineyards, Napa offers much more to the historian than its reputation as wine maker. Just an hour from San Francisco and Sacramento, the many towns of the Napa region are small enough to be walkable, friendly, and unique in design. The 240 images in this new book, with some photographs never before collected, demonstrate the architectural and historical diversity of this beautiful region, presented in walking-tour format. Through vintage photographs, the reader is pulled back in time to 1880 Napa, where a scant but diverse 4,000 residents reside. Of those people, only 163 were actually born in California, which accounts for the variety of architectural styles throughout the county. The multinational heritages of Irish, German, English, Canadian, Swiss, Scottish, French, Swedish, Mexican, Italian, and Chinese settlers are richly expressed through the architecture and landmarks of Napa's villages and towns. Captured here are the homes and structures that give the region its glow, including Napa's Churchill Manor, Greystone Winery in St. Helena, Magnolia Hotel in Yountville, and Stags Leap manor in the heart of the Stags Leap District.

San Francisco Beer

9781626199521

$21.99

The story of beer in San Francisco is as old as the city itself. San Francisco had its first commercial brewery by 1847, two years before the gold rush, and went on to reign as the major brewing center in the American West through the nineteenth century. From the 1930s to the early 1950s, iconic San Francisco–based breweries Lucky and Acme owned the statewide California market. In the 1960s, Fritz Maytag transformed San Francisco's tiny and primitive Anchor Brewing into America's first craft brewery. Now, well into its fourth generation of craft breweries, San Francisco has seen more new breweries open in the second decade of the twenty-first century than were opened in the entire previous century, proving that tech is not San Francisco's only booming industry. Join local author and beer enthusiast Bill Yenne as he explores San Francisco's rich tapestry of beers and breweries that have made it a brewing capital in the West.

They initiated a large and vibrant Mexican American community, one that has virtually been ignored by conventional histories.
