Salt Fork State Park

9780738541334

$24.99

Salt Fork State Park is Ohio's largest park, covering about 20,000 acres of rolling, forested terrain just eight miles northeast of Cambridge. Despite the park's timeless wilderness feel, for almost 150 years farmers worked this land, many occupying the same property for five generations. In the 1960s when the park was created, evidence of that agrarian past quickly receded. Over time, new forest reclaimed fields and pastures, and wildlife returned in abundance. All but one of the region's farms, mills, covered bridges, and schoolhouses were removed—the Kennedy Stone House Museum lives on as a reminder of the region's past, dedicated to preserving the stories of the families who once made a life on these lands. Salt Fork State Park celebrates the heritage of the parklands, offers glimpses into the lives, labor, and leisure of its residents, and points the curious explorer toward some of the many remnants of the park's agrarian past.

Giant City State Park

9780738584188

$24.99

Anyone wanting to understand how Giant City State Park in rural Makanda earned its name need only hike on the Giant City Nature Trail. Here they walk through the park's namesake rock formations, carved 20,000 years ago by the melting waters of a Pleistocene glacier that stopped a mere 1.5 miles from the park. Yet it wasn't until 1933 to 1941, when the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) operated its three work camps, that man blazed his most notable trail in the park's history. The CCC's work since then has been enjoyed by millions of park visitors to its stone picnic shelters, trails throughout the park, and the massive Giant City Lodge.

Breakheart Reservation

9780738597799

$24.99

Comprising over 600 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and hilly terrain, Breakheart Reservation has expansive views that reach south to Boston, north to New Hampshire, and east to the Atlantic Ocean. What began as a parcel of common land awarded to new settlers arriving in Saugus in the early 1700s is today considered a gem in the Massachusetts state park system. In the 1890s, businessman Benjamin Johnson and two friends bought the land to create a private hunting retreat called Breakheart Hill Forest. The tranquil forest was catapulted into the limelight in 1900 when their caretaker was brutally murdered. Three decades later, Johnson and his partners sold the land to the state. It became a camp for the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps and was later transformed into a recreational area.

Yellowstone National Park (French version)

$24.99

Hacklebarney and Voorhees State Parks

9780738536798

$24.99

Hacklebarney and Voorhees State Parks recounts the history of two beautiful natural sanctuaries at the southwestern end of New Jersey's Highlands. Managed as a single unit by the state park service, the two parks are Hacklebarney, 977 acres along the Black River corridor, and Voorhees, 640 acres of gently rolling farmland. Their stories are similar: both parks were created in the 1920s on privately donated land and were developed by the federally operated Civilian Conservation Corps. With more than two hundred unique photographs, many published here for the first time, Hacklebarney and Voorhees State Parks shows life at the CCC camps, the building of trails and roads by hand, and the repair of forests.

Mass Audubon

9780738537825

$24.99

Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall might be surprised to see what their simple discussion over tea in Boston's Back Bay in 1896 has led to more than one hundred years later. Concerned about the widespread killing of birds for use in the millinery trade, the ladies asked other society women not to wear dead birds on their hats and to join the Massachusetts Audubon Society for the Protection of Birds. Today, sixty-eight thousand households across the state support the protection of all native Massachusetts wildlife on more than thirty thousand acres of sanctuaries from Wellfleet Bay on Cape Cod to Pleasant Valley in Lenox. Mass Audubon carries the reader around the state to meet the farmers, entrepreneurs, and donors who owned, worked, and loved the land before it passed into the protective embrace of this conservation organization.

Kentucky's Horse-Drawn Era

9781467111867

$24.99

Images of America: Kentucky's Horse-Drawn Era takes a look at the days when animals—mostly horses and mules—supplied the horsepower for daily life in Kentucky. The animals' work included hauling buggies, carriages, wagons, hearses, circus wagons, parade floats, bookmobiles, coal cars, school buses, and everything and everyone in between. This book even has a photograph of a mule team pulling a two-story house down the street of a small town in Kentucky; other unusual images feature a high-diving horse and the winners of the Mule Derby. These vintage photographs highlight horses and mules in some of the many roles they filled before the advent of the automobile, the pickup truck, and the tractor.

Oak Park and the Montgomery Zoo

9780738553115

$24.99

Established at the beginning of the 20th century with a total of 41 acres, Oak Park was the social and recreational center of Alabama's capital city, Montgomery. It was here in 1935 that a menagerie of animals was housed in facilities built by the Works Progress Administration called the Oak Park Zoo. As the civil rights movement gathered steam in the 1950s, there was a class action suit to desegregate the city's parks, including the zoo. In response, all parks were closed, including Oak Park. In 1967, plans were approved for a 34-acre recreational park in north Montgomery, which included acreage for a small zoo. Unfortunately, although the zoo was scheduled to open in 1971, thirteen years after the closing of Oak Park, the opening was delayed for almost a year when the zoo's first director died in a car accident just 37 days after accepting his post. The opening of the new Montgomery Zoo was finally celebrated in 1972 and included the happy homecoming of a female capuchin monkey, an original resident of Oak Park.

San Gorgonio Search and Rescue Team

9780738555768

$24.99

In February 1958, a tragic climbing accident occurred on Big Falls, in Forest Falls, California, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old boy. Rescue attempts were futile because there were no experienced personnel or climbing equipment available. As a result of this unfortunate tragedy, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department
spearheaded a recruitment of volunteers, forming the county's first mountain search and rescue team. Since that time, the San Gorgonio Search and Rescue Team has performed thousands of searches, rescues,
and body recoveries. The organization is the oldest of its kind in San Bernardino County and is proud to have second-generation team members. This book tells the story of these dedicated volunteers through photographs taken by team members and through the stories retold by those who were there.

Ely and Winton

9781467163521

$24.99

Today, Ely and Winton are known as the end of the road in northeastern Minnesota. Originally settled by the Obijwe and mapped by the voyageurs, these two towns sat among some of the best timber and iron ore in America.

Incorporated in 1888, the mines along the north end of Ely required hundreds of workers to extract the iron ore that the country needed for steel. At the same time, three miles away, the town of Winton grew around the shore of Fall Lake. By the end of the 19th century, the area was booming and neighborhoods were built around the mines and sawmills. Located in Ely and Winton’s backyard are the Boundary Waters, over 1,000 lakes on the border of Canada. Visitors soon discovered the appeal of a place in the woods on a lake or a canoe trip in the wilderness. Industry and recreation existed side by side, attracting different people from all over—outdoorsmen, nature lovers, businessmen, and students.

Reed Petersen is a history instructor at Minnesota North College–Vermilion and gives tours at Soudan Underground Mine State Park. Born and raised in Ely, he lives there with his family and is active in the Ely-Winton Historical Society. The Ely-Winton Historical Society was officially formed in 1961 to preserve the legacy of the history of the area, centering on the area and its people.

The Knickerbocker Snowstorm

9780738597904

$24.99

On the evening of January 28, 1922, several hundred people fought their way through the greatest snowstorm in Washington's history to see a show at the Knickerbocker Theater, the city's largest and most modern moving picture theater of the time. Unbeknownst to the theater patrons, the Knickerbocker Theater's flat roof was tremendously burdened by the weight of the snow. During the show's intermission, the snow-covered roof crashed down upon the crowd. As the roof fell, it collapsed the theater's balcony and pulled down portions of the surrounding brick walls, killing 98 people and injuring 133. Some of Washington's prominent politicians and business owners were among the casualties. The disaster ranks as one of Washington's worst in history, and the snowstorm continues to hold the record for Washington's single greatest snowfall.

Around Susquehanna State Park

9780738518183

$24.99

In 1608, Capt. John Smith navigated the waters of the Susquehanna River and named it Smith's Falles. At that time, the surrounding land was occupied by the Susquehannock Indians, and after their departure, land grants were awarded to English colonists. These early settlers hewed timber from the dense forests for shelter and
cultivated the land to grow crops of corn, wheat, and tobacco. The waterway served as a means of travel and as a source of food for these adventurers. They fished from the river and nearby streams and harnessed water power to operate their flint and grist mills.

Tacoma's Parks

9780738548968

$24.99

When civic benefactor Clinton P. Ferry donated a graceful, elliptically shaped plot of land in 1883 for the first park in Tacoma, he hoped his adopted hometown would do him proud and become a veritable city of parks. The young community did not disappoint. Landmarks such as Wright Park, Lincoln Park, and Point Defiance Park graced the landscape by 1900, a testament to Tacoma's appreciation for beauty, conservation, and recreation, which continues to this day. In 1907, residents voted to establish the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma, Washington's first independent parks municipality, to act as steward of these civic treasures. A century later, Metro Parks Tacoma embraces some 57 parks covering 2,700 acres, as well as swimming pools, sports complexes, community centers, and recreational programs for all ages.
