Although its land had been settled by Dutch, English, and French homesteaders as early as the seventeenth century, the borough of Fair Lawn was not established until 1924. It had been part of Saddle River Township and, before that, of New Barbadoes. As late as 1876, it was an agricultural community, home to several vegetable and fruit farms and dairies. The need to house workers in the mills of nearby Paterson led to the rapid suburban development of the town. Noted for its residents' civic volunteerism and for its history, Fair Lawn is home to eight sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places-sites such as the Cadmus House and the Dutch House-all of which are included in Fair Lawn. This book contains images of the nationally famous Radburn planned community and the construction of Memorial Park and Pool, completed entirely by volunteer efforts, beautifully combining the borough's agrarian past with the community spirit of the twentieth century. This richly detailed book is a testament to the devotion of Fair Lawn's residents to their hometown.

Montclair, New Jersey, like most American towns, has grown dramatically over the course of the last one hundred years.

Much of the early 1900s landscape has been disguised, and the town has come to reflect the popular styles and fashions of changing eras. Streets have been paved, the facades of commercial buildings have been updated, and homes have been altered to reflect contemporary tastes and accommodate modern conveniences. Egg Harbor City was founded as a refuge from the sweeping nativism of the Know-Nothings, a group that tried to limit immigration and naturalization into the United States. Egg Harbor City was a place where German Americans could maintain the traditions, language, and lifestyle of their fatherland. The city was designed in rectangular blocks with lots for building, gardening, or farming. Parks were built and a harbor was planned on the north side of the city with rail lines connecting it to the Camden and Atlantic Railroad. Following the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Egg Harbor City's wines earned the community great respect, and it became known as the ""Wine City,"" drawing hundreds of visitors to its many wineries. Egg Harbor City celebrates the early years of the place once known as the most German city in the United States of America.

Long Branch is one of the greatest nineteenth-century American cities.

For decades it was the premier summer resort in the Northeast, and a list of visitors to the area reads like a Who's Who of the nineteenth century: Presidents Arthur, Garfield, Grant, Hayes, Harrison, McKinley, and Wilson all vacationed here, as well as Diamond Jim Brady, Lillian Russell, General Winfield Scott, Henry Ward Beecher, ""Buffalo"" Bill Cody, Horace Greeley, and General George Meade. Leaders in fashion, finance, theater, politics, and the military flocked to Long Branch by the hundreds because of its tremendous natural beauty, Victorian mansions and hotels, and proximity to New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D. C.

Manasquan, with its quaint, tree-lined streets and hometown flavor, offered much more. To its visitors, who came from New York, Philadelphia, and everywhere in between, Manasquan was the quintessential seaside resort. To its residents, the town has always been the perfect place to live, work, and play. Manasquan Revisited, the second volume of Manasquan's photographic history, delightfully captures more rare moments from the past of this historic town. From shops along Main Street, to tours of Victorian homes, to the boats and docks along the Glimmer Glass, it is easy to see that Manasquan is a tranquil corner of yesterday's way of life. The history of the Holmdel region of Old Monmouth began in 1664. In the beginning, Holmdel was part of Middletown, and residents traced their roots to individual villages or neighborhoods within the area. Not until the early 1830s was the name Holmdel agreed upon for the area's first post office. Only in 1857 was Holmdel officially designated as a separate township. Holmdel and Pleasant Valley chronicles the development of the township from its earliest independent days. Many rare and important photographs of Holmdel settlers and their houses, barns, and meeting structures appear in this volume that have never before been published. The evolution of the rural township and its agrarian economy over the years are revealed in fascinating detail.
