Regular price $24.99 Sale price $18.74 Save 25%Photographer Joseph Bowman engages readers with a visual tour of the railroads of Western North Carolina. Enjoy scenes of busy mainline action on Norfolk Southern and CSX mainlines including unit coal and manifest freight action on the once busy Old Fort Loops. Joseph also documents several short line railroads which play a vital role in the local economies. Steam enthusiasts will not be disappointed, as multiple tourist railroads and mainline steam excursions are covered.
Joseph has been photographing trains since 2005 and has photographed many unique events including the last train to Lenoir, NC, along with the last excursions that Norfolk Southern allowed to be operated to Asheville, NC. The most featured section of railroad covered in the book has also experienced quite a few changes in recent years, and Joseph shares with us many scenes that haven't taken place in years, and as of being published, are not likely to happen any time in the near future, if ever again.

North Carolina is a state that has progressively worked to shake the old South mentality against a modern backdrop. Yet, the haunting and brash facts lie in a legacy of crumbling walls and barely standing skeletons. Hoodoo and Satanism alike writhe in its belly like Culebra masked only by superstition. Enslavement and suppression were its stronghold from 8,000 B.C. and now again in the present day. While attempts to thwart and rise above the past play out, the one thing that remains true is the bones of the structures that held them. Guiltless, blameless wood, frame, metal, brick, or stone tell the tales of long ago, with pictures for some being the only proof of their existence.

Ask any older inhabitant of the mountains about their recollection to enjoy hours of conversation. With some cities left without inhabitants to tell their stories, Alexa Atkins has worked to meticulously capture the remaining details in film. Surrounded by these places as a child, Atkins finally began to express her fascination by photographing the areas near her childhood home in 2017. First filling rolls of 35mm covering Burke County, she began to stop the car and dig for a camera every few minutes when on the road in Western North Carolina. Growing up near beauty and a wealth of relics to the past can lead to stagnation--a boredom of views others would kill to see. This project began as an effort to capture the sites passed without a second glance. However, taking these photos reinvigorated the artist's love and appreciation for these abandoned sites, and with this book she hopes to open many more eyes to this beauty while reintroducing others to their home.

Leslie Moody and Frances Johnson Moody never owned the company outright, but their dreams shaped North Carolina's Hyalyn Porcelain, Inc. and drove it forward to the satisfaction of an emerging, increasingly modern post-World War II America. Hyalyn's reputation for high quality led to its association with top designers like Michael and Rosemary Lax, Eva Zeisel, Georges Briard, Charles Leslie Fordyce, Herbert Cohen, Erwin Kalla, and Esta Brodey.
Before moving to North Carolina in 1945, ceramic engineer and designer Less Moody prepared to organize and operate Hyalyn Porcelain, Inc. From Zanesville's Mosaic Tile Company, Ohio State University's ceramics department, Love Field Pottery, Abingdon Pottery, San José Potteries, and Rookwood Pottery, he gained expertise in clay formulation, glaze chemistry, product design, plant operation, project planning, advertising, and employee management. With the aid of investors, his dream came true when, in 1946, Hyalyn's first lamp bases and flower containers emerged from the shop's tunnel kiln.
Thoroughly documented and illustrated with 425 images, hyalyn: America's Finest Porcelain is a complete history of Hyalyn Porcelain, Inc., and its successors, Hyalyn Cosco, Hyalyn, Ltd., and Vanguard Studios.
