In 1910, Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, one of Edwardian Canada's wealthiest men, started building his famed Casa Loma in Toronto. At the same time, he also started work on his country farm and estate in King Township called Lake Marie, named after his first wife, Lady Mary. Created as a place of respite for Pellatt, his wife and their many friends, the property later was developed into an agricultural farm school by a group of Basilian leaders. And in 1942, the Augustinians established a Monastery and Retreat Centre called Marylake on the land they continue to steward today. Historic First Presbyterian Church Cemetery was established in 1831 and over time has survived vandalism, storms, an earthquake, and threats of removal. It is a lasting remembrance to the early citizens of Greensboro who carved a city out of the wilderness. Originally the cemetery was located on the edge of town, but because of Greensboro's growth, it is now nestled in the center of the cultural district behind the Greensboro Historical Museum. Two years later, Michigan Memorial Park opened its gates to begin serving the needs of this growing community tucked away in a corner of the township located southwest of Detroit. One century after Chicago's incorporation, the city hosted the 1933 World's Fair, which was so successful it was held over for 1934. Spokane's Expo '74

In the late 1960s, Spokane's civic leaders were desperately looking for a way to revitalize a large section of downtown, especially a motley collection of little-used railroad lines and polluted industrial sites along the Spokane River. Their solution was to use the area for Expo '74, which was billed as the first ecologically themed world's fair. Critics predicted the project was sure to fail, as Spokane was the smallest city to ever host a world's fair, but history proved them wrong. From the minute the gates opened on May 4, 1974, the crowds loved the fair. Hosting 5.4 million visitors, with participation from several major companies and countries, Expo '74 was a success. As planned, it launched a rebirth along the river that left a permanent legacy, the popular Riverfront Park.

St. Louis Casa Loma Ballroom

In 1927, on the northeast corner of Cherokee and Iowa Streets in south St. Louis, a multistory, multipurpose building was erected. Retail shops and a bowling alley occupied the first floor, while upstairs was a place that defied the imagination of someone driving by in their brand new Model T Ford. Today, that upstairs space, with its lofty ceiling, huge maple tongue-in-groove dance floor, and wraparound balcony, is the Casa Loma Ballroom--St. Louis' last grand ballroom. In 1907, William and Florence Sloane began construction on a five-room summer cottage on the banks of the Lafayette River in Norfolk. Over the course of 30 years, they would expand their home from its origins as a summer retreat into a 42-room Arts and Crafts mansion nestled on 12 acres of gardens and grounds. As their home grew, so did their desire to bring an arts scene to southeastern Virginia. In 1937, the Sloanes turned their attention to repurposing their home as a museum. By opening the site to the public, the Sloane family created a new space for the arts and education in Norfolk. Today, visitors continue to enjoy their vision through an expansive art collection and acres of gardens and grounds.

Congress created Perrysburg in 1816 to secure control of its strategic trading location on the largest river flowing into Lake Erie, the Maumee River, an integral waterway for shipping and also an important passageway for western migration. As a busy port and shipbuilding center, Perrysburg attracted entrepreneurial pioneers from the East, who, as they prospered, built remarkable homes, buildings, and other structures. During the World War I era, wealthy Toledo industrialists also arrived, building riverside mansions. Over 100 of this small 19th-century community's architectural treasures still stand, and they include examples of nearly every major domestic architectural style popular from the 1820s to the 1930s. Most of the structures that make up the historical character of Perrysburg are best represented in the Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Since its beginnings in 1882, the Osterville Village Library has long fulfilled its founding promise to be a free library and reading room at Osterville in the Town of Barnstable in this Commonwealth and to support the promotion of study and reading. Architecture is defined as the design of structures for various uses, but the passion of the designers and builders makes it much more than that. Milton
Architecture shows the unique views of the town's style from its earliest days. Known as Unquety by the Neponset Tribe of Indians, Milton was founded
in 1640, and was incorporated in 1662. During the town's first century, the architecture was post-Medieval or First Period construction. Describing the town in 1839 for his Historical Collections of Every Town in Massachusetts, John Warner Barber said, Milton is adorned with some pleasant country seats, and contains at the two falls [Lower Mills and Mattapan], and at the bridge where the Neponset
meets the tide, manufactories of cotton, paper. . .
Today, Milton's architecture is represented by a wide spectrum of styles from the earliest houses in town, the Capen House (c. 1655) and the Tucker House
(c. 1670), to the Daniel Vose House (known today as the Suffolk Resolves House) and the Isaiah Rogers-designed Captain Robert Bennet Forbes House. Each of the architectural styles is the reflection of an architect's or a builder's idea of adaptations of period designs. Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and numerous Victorian styles are just a few that can be viewed in Milton Architecture.
