For nearly 40 years, the quirky little narrow-gauge railroad, begun in 1889 by the Ilwaco Railway and Navigation Company, ran along the North Beach Peninsula in southwestern Washington. The train provided the primary transportation link from Ilwaco in the south to Nahcotta in the north, making peninsula communities accessible to one another and supplying a reliable route to outside markets for the area's major industries--oystering, logging, and cranberry farming. A tide table, not a timetable, governed the railroad's schedule, allowing coordination with the steamers that met the train at either end of its daily journeys. Old-timers of the area still speak affectionately of the train's unorthodox schedule and its informal and accommodating service. Originally settled by the Germans, Swiss, and Dutch, Ballentine is a small town in what is known as the Dutch Fork area. This area includes the land from Newberry to Columbia and between the Saluda and Broad Rivers. Alan Ballentine moved his family to this rural farming area in the 1850s. His descendants operated a sawmill, gristmill, cotton gin, general store, and an oil company at various times from the 1890s to the 1990s. In the 1890s, the railroad came through the Ballentine property and had a stop that was known as Ballentine's Mill. Later it became known as Ballentine. The town of Ballentine, like so many small towns and communities in the area, sprang up around the railroad. While some towns like Chapin incorporated, others like White Rock, Hilton, and Ballentine did not, so the area, while successful, retained the feel of a small town. With Lake Murray nearby and the interstate within minutes, Ballentine's history has been preserved as a wonderful place to live and visit in South Carolina.

When describing the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site in a 1945 interview, Tennessee historian Samuel Cole Williams said, "No other site in Tennessee compares with this in its historic interest." Five original structures, six reconstructed and restored buildings, a limestone cave, and a small family cemetery bear witness today of the rich and diverse history of Tipton-Haynes, which spans the Pleistocene Ice Age, Native American settlement, Tennessee statehood, the American Civil War, and the Great Depression.
