Campobello Island

$24.99

During its long, legendary history, Campobello Island has been known by many names: the Native American word for it was Abahquict, French explorers called it Port aux Coquilles, and the English named it Outer Island. Campobello rises on the outer edge of Passamaquoddy Bay just across the water from Eastport, Maine, and only a stone's throw away from the Narrows at Lubec, Maine. Campobello Island features rare historical photographs gleaned from the collection of the Campobello Public Library and Museum, other archives, and private collections of many local families. The book chronicles the century-long rule of the Owen family, depicts the fishing villages of Welshpool and Wilson's Beach, salutes the island's military heroes, and captures the faces of countless residents, including the Roosevelts, who were members of the summer colony for more than half a century. The story of "Sunrise at Campobello" rounds out this extraordinary history.

Saint John

In its 225 years of existence, Saint John has undergone numerous transformations to become the city it is today. In 1783, an influx of American settlers resulted in upwards of 16,000 residents, and
by 1867, the city was the fourth largest in Canada. The most catastrophic fire in the city's history came in 1877, resulting in the loss of some 1,600 homes and businesses. Many of the structures were
rebuilt and are still standing today, contributing to the city's Victorian character. By the 1950s, historic structures began to disappear in the name of progress, and a huge urban renewal development was
carried out in the 1960s. Saint John: 1877–1980 highlights the many changes the city has seen over the years, through photographs of its neighbourhoods, play places, tourist attractions, and residents.

East Saint John

$24.99

East Saint John, affectionately called the East Side, became a part of the City of Saint John in 1967. For decades prior to its merger, the city and east side community of the Parish of Simonds cooperated in many areas of municipal service. East Saint John contained many industries, including the dry dock, Foleys Pottery, and McAvitys, and later K. C. Irving's oil refinery at Silver Falls. During World War II , Fort Mispec was established at Mispec Point, and in 1970, the fort site became Irving Oil's Canaport. More than just an industrial area, East Saint John was the site of recreational fishing and boating and home to the neighbourhoods of Forest Hills, Glen Falls, Champlain Heights, and Jean and Belgrave Streets. East Saint John was also the home of the Moosepath raceway, Exhibition Park, and the Simonds Arena. Rothesay Avenue was the commercial heart of the east side until the 1970s, when new malls and shopping centers opened nearby.

Lancaster

$24.99

For many, the City of Lancaster lasted less than one generation. Incorporated as Canada's newest city on January 1, 1953, Lancaster was swallowed up in an amalgamation with Canada's oldest city, Saint John, on January 1, 1967, Canada's centennial year. Since then, the name Lancaster has conjured up images of that part of Saint John known as the west side, or Saint John West. Yet even prior to 1953, when Lancaster was a collection of communities including Fairville, Beaconsfield, Randolph, Milford, and South Bay, area residents have been bonded by a unique sense of community and pride. The name lives
on today in the Lancaster Mall and the Lancaster Centennial Arena, as well as in the names of local sports teams.

Saint John West

9780738501666

$24.99

Saint John West Volume II adds to and continues the story of the West Side's struggle for existence. Always dependent on seasonal industry, initially fishing and shipbuilding and later the railway and seaport, the area has seen high and low points in its 200-plus years of existence. At one time, residents imagined times would become so prosperous that King Street would be transformed into a major boulevard paved with gold and Courtenay Hill would be the site of a huge, decorative cathedral dedicated to the inner spirit. In reality, the fish have stopped coming, the wooden ships are no longer built, and the Canadian Pacific railway that provided hundreds of jobs and promised such hope has left the Maritimes. Changing trade patterns and political favours to keep the St. Lawrence open to Montreal has devastated the winter-port operations. Many Saint John West residents have had to close their businesses and move on. Others were displaced when the construction of the Harbour Bridge tore three full blocks out of the heart of the community in 1968. Still others have chosen to remain, and today, though little industry exists, the area is still vibrant and working hard to hold together some vestige of the pride of former times.

Bridging Saint John Harbour

9781467120104

$24.99

In the 1850s, lumber mill owner W. Kilby Reynolds, with engineer Edward R. Serrell, succeeded in building the first suspension bridge to connect divided Saint John. This operated as a toll crossing until 1858, when it became a government-owned structure. From then until the present, there have been two vehicular-pedestrian bridges and two rail bridges serving travelers crossing Saint John Harbour at the gorge at the Reversing Falls. By the third quarter of the 19th century, there was talk and plans for a second bridge, one which would cross at Navy Island to the North End. It took about 80 years before this plan came to fruition, and the Saint John Harbour Bridge opened in 1968. Through this rich collection of photographs, Bridging Saint John Harbour clearly shows the importance of the varied connector bridges over Saint John Harbour and how they came to be built.

Saint John West and its Neighbours

9780738572697

$24.99

This fascinating collection of photographs brings to life the dramatic and colourful history of Saint John West and its neighbours. Over two hundred images show how this area developed during the last century as the fishing, shipping, and rail centre of Saint John; how it saw its business and residential districts gutted; how it struggled to rebuild itself and grow again, only to suffer a disastrous fire, revive a second time, and then slide slowly into decline during the latter decades of this century.

Together David Goss and Fred Miller guide us through the city's vibrant past: the events, industries, places, and people which have defined Saint John West over the decades. Photographs show the arrival of the railway, the flood of new immigrants, the development of the harbour, and the growth of the shipping industry. We see how significantly working conditions have changed over the decades for fishermen, foundry workers, and other local people. We see how much the local landscape has changed, with pictures of buildings both familiar and long gone and bustling streets such as King Street, Protection Street, and Union Street complete with drugstores, chowder houses, saloons, and other local landmarks no longer with us. The images capture catastrophes such as the Waterfront Fire of 1931 and celebrations such as parades and festivals. Most of all, they preserve and honour the lives of the ordinary people of Saint John West: streetcar drivers, firemen, harbour workers, fishermen, store owners, tipplers, schoolchildren, and foundry workers, amongst many others. We see how buildings, technology, fashions, and lifestyles have changed while a sense of community and a zest for life among local residents has remained constant over the decades.
