A Life in Antebellum Charlotte

9781596290884

$21.99

In 1837 Sarah Frew Davidson began keeping a private journal recording the events of her daily life. Years later, her collection provides an intimate glimpse into antebellum life in North Carolina. Sarah, as mistress of one of North Carolina's largest plantations—The Grove—offers the reader a nineteenth-century perspective on slavery, education and the impact of religion on the lives of Southern women. Begun in the wake of the religious revival that swept the South in the mid-nineteenth century, this journal serves as a candid perspective into life in the changing village of Charlotte, capturing the effects of the newly constructed U.S. Mint and the Carolina gold mining rush on this small community. Editors Dyer, McConnell and Williams, along with a team of Rosedale historians, meticulously transcribed the original hand-written journal to be presented here in its entirety. Also included in this edition are supplementary historical annotations, maps and biographical details that provide a comprehensive background for the events and people mentioned in the journal. The day-to-day events of Sarah's life reveal much about the realities of plantation life as well as an understanding of the complexities of religion and slavery in the antebellum period.

Martin County Revisited

9781467120524

$24.99

Situated along the south bank of the Roanoke River, Martin County was established in 1774. Vast pine forests in the region assured the county's early economic success with the production of naval stores, tar pitch, and turpentine. By the late 19th century, large-scale lumber concerns and tobacco and peanut farming ushered in a new era of prosperity. Today, the area leads the state in the production of peanuts and cotton. Twice during the 20th century, the county made national headlines—first with the 1925 Needleman Case and later with the famed Williamston civil rights events of 1963 and 1964. Fond memories of church dinners, family gatherings, parades, and intriguing personalities like local baseball legends Jim and Gaylord Perry are recalled through images that make this return visit to Martin County all the more worthwhile. Martin County Revisited showcases the rich agrarian and social history of this eastern North Carolina county.

King

9780738542225

$24.99

Nestled at the threshold of the Piedmont Foothills, King, North Carolina, is blessed with rural beauty, a neighborly spirit, and small-town Southern charm. The community, rooted in agriculture, was originally called King's Cabin after one of the first homes built in the area around 1826. It was settled in the 1880s by several founding families whose wisdom, along with the railroad, helped awaken the quiet countryside to new life. Ironically this town named after a home has become one of the fastest growing bedroom communities in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad. Images of America: King captures the history, heritage, and heart of a community founded by families who saw beyond the setting sun. These settlers helped establish churches, schools, businesses, and a community spirit that still, more than a century later, lives today.

Winston-Salem's Historic Salem Cemetery

9781467115254

$24.99

In the shadow of Winston-Salem's tall buildings and within hearing distance of highways and railroad yards, Salem Cemetery exudes calmness and serenity throughout its rolling landscape. The hills and ravines that comprise its terrain made it an unlikely location for a cemetery. Since it was chartered in 1857, Salem Cemetery reflects the personal taste and imagination of individuals who designed their family plots, vaults, and markers. A walk along the winding paths, noting names on markers and vaults, is a walk through the city's history, recalling the people who lived, labored, and loved here. The story of the people who find eternal rest in Salem Cemetery is the story of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Sedalia and the Palmer Memorial Institute

9780738516448

$24.99

Sedalia and the Palmer Memorial Institute traces the growth and development of a rural Southern community that made an impact on the nation.

Sedalia, North Carolina, has a rich and diverse history. In 1901, the American Missionary Association hired a young woman, Charlotte Hawkins Brown, to teach at a small school in eastern Guilford County. The school closed in 1902, and at the request of the local residents, Brown remained and opened the Alice Freeman Palmer Memorial Institute, which in later years became a world renowned African-American preparatory school that educated children from the wealthiest families in the United States and six foreign nations.

Pleasant Garden

9781467133838

$24.99

The 20th century brought dramatic change to the closely knit yet independent-minded farming community of Pleasant Garden, North Carolina. Although descendants of the families who migrated from the Eastern Shore of Maryland still lived on the lands of their ancestors and attended Pleasant Garden Methodist Episcopal Church, which was organized in 1788, they welcomed progress. The community became home to one of the first state-supported high schools, and the Pleasant Garden Company built manufacturing businesses alongside the Atlantic & Yadkin Railroad, where eight trains passed each day. These improvements created a ripple effect of development that began with housing needs for students, faculty, and employees. Following World War II, the community no longer had passenger trains; however, new factories relied on rail service. These industries found qualified employees from the surrounding community. As housing developments and recreational and retail opportunities evolved, and as many baby boomer families began commuting to nearby cities for work, Pleasant Garden became a bedroom community. In 1997, it incorporated as a town.

Weaverville

9781467133654

$24.99

Native Americans, particularly the Cherokee, inhabited Western North Carolina for thousands of years prior to white settlement. Legend has it that the name Dry Ridge derived from what the natives called the area. When Michael Montraville Weaver provided the land in the 1870s, Weaversville was born. The name was changed to Weaverville a few years later. In the time since, Weaverville has slowly grown. It now offers a quaint and historic downtown, along with substantial newer commercial development on Weaver Boulevard leading to Interstate 26. With the bustling town of Asheville just a few miles down the road, Weaverville has become a haven for retirees, longtime residents, and newcomers who want the cultural offerings of Asheville and the charm of a small town.

Winston-Salem's Historic West End

9780738516820

$24.99

From its beginnings as a regional spa resort and an exclusive community of wealthy tobacco and textile families, Winston-Salem's West End has become an island of calm in the midst of a bustling Southern city of 200,000 residents. Built around one of the first electric streetcar lines in the country, the West End boasted "Millionaires' Row," where the Reynolds and Hanes families kept homes bought with manufacturing fortunes. When urban re-design and the aging of the neighborhood in the 1960s threatened the West End's streetscape, local residents and friends stepped in to preserve its beauty.

Raleigh and Wake County Firefighting Volume II

9780738516202

$24.99

This second collection of historic firefighting images covers 1940 through 1990, five formative decades for fire protection in North Carolina's capital county. During this period, the Raleigh Fire Department quadrupled in size, smaller municipal fire departments modernized, and rural fire departments formed to protect outlying areas. As populations increased and technology advanced, 20th century firefighters found their duties evolving from simple smoke eating to include emergency medical services, rescue and extrication, and hazardous-materials training.

Raleigh and Wake County Firefighting, Volume II, depicts fires, fire equipment, and firefighters in over 200 images culled from newspapers, archives, and personal collections. Included in this second volume are rare, early photographs of the Six Forks Road, Western Boulevard, and Wake Forest #2 fire departments.

Johnston County Revisited

9781467123624

$24.99

Created in 1746, Johnston County is located along the fall line between North Carolina's Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions. Smithfield, on the Neuse River, has been the county seat since 1771. In 1856, Johnston County became part of the Fertile Crescent along the east-west North Carolina Railroad, which spawned the thriving towns of Princeton, Pine Level, Selma, and Clayton. In the 1880s, a north-south rail line, eventually known as the Atlantic Coastline, brought Kenly, Micro, Four Oaks, and Benson into existence. Johnston County boasts film legend Ava Gardner, bootleg kingpin Percy Flowers, Vicks VapoRub, and other local claims to fame. It is still a farming county, although recent growth from the Research Triangle region has brought marked changes to the rural landscape. In recent years, Wilson's Mills and Archer Lodge have gained corporate status. These historical images tell a story not only of the extraordinary people who have called Johnston County home but also of the ordinary, everyday individuals who have left their mark.

Roanoke Island's Boating Heritage

9781467125888

$24.99

Those fortunate enough to live on Roanoke Island have always depended on boats. In exploration-era sketches, Native American Algonquins were depicted in their dugout canoes. English settlers took the native concept a step further, developing kunners and, later, periaugers. Sloops and schooners made it possible to trade with far-off lands. Shad boats allowed fishermen to catch enough fresh product to ship to northern markets. Shrimp boats, crab boats, and trawlers brought about a new level of financial independence. Charter boats went past the limits of sound waters to the deep sea, carrying sport fishermen who were ready to pay for the chance to land a Gulf Stream trophy. Today's luxury yachts would boggle the minds of 20th-century backyard boatbuilders. Whether the need for a boat was transportation, subsistence fishing, making a living, or recreation, boatbuilding became a skill many residents picked up out of necessity. This skill matured into a trait that many believe runs deep in the genetic makeup of the local population.

9780738543109

$24.99

Originally the cemetery was located on the edge of town, but because of Greensboro's growth, it is now nestled in the center of the cultural district behind the Greensboro Historical Museum. Those buried in the cemetery are from all walks of life–from wealthy to poor, those with doctorate degrees to the illiterate, the famous to those whose names are lost for all time, the newborn to the centenarian, the saint to the sinner, and the slave owner to the abolitionist. The early builders of the city and state and veterans of four wars now rest in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
