This is a visual history of the architecture of tourist accommodations in Maryland's famous beach resort. These have ranged from the Atlantic Hotel to the most recent chain hotels and condominiums that have so altered the streetscapes and skyline of the barrier island. Ocean City's architectural evolution paralleled national developments; it began on boardwalk-adjacent and beachfront sites with turreted and gabled cottages and shingle-clad Victorian hotels. By the 1920s, porticoed boardwalk hostelries emerged, and as the popularity of the automobile increased, auto camps and groups of cottages developed into motor courts and mom-and-pop motels during the mid-20th century. Located in the center of the Delmarva Peninsula on the Wicomico River, Salisbury is a town steeped in history. Formed by an act of provincial legislature in 1732, Salisbury lies on the east bank of the river on the original land of William Winder. Salisbury developed into the commercial center of the peninsula by the time of the Civil War--it was the southernmost point at which all goods were shipped north. This strategic location also made Salisbury the distribution point for goods coming south, an advantage that placed the region at the center of the state's economic boom. In 1867, Wicomico County was formed and Salisbury was chosen as the county seat. In the 20th century, Salisbury prospered into a communication and financial center for all of lower Maryland.

Situated on the fickle Marshyhope Creek, Federalsburg, has long reached out to Maryland and the rest of the country with trade on its waterways and rails. In 1791, Isaac Nichols called a tract of land in the middle of the eastern shore of Maryland "Rawley." The name became "Federalsburg" in the late 18th century when the small village, consisting of only two streets, was dominated by Federalist influence. Before the Civil War, Federalsburg was involved in the shipbuilding industry; later its energies were invested in mills, farming, and canneries. When the railroad arrived in 1867-1868, trade in Federalsburg proliferated even more as refrigerated cars allowed produce to be shipped to major cities in the North. Federalsburg's agricultural heritage has since continued to endure.

When Somerset County, named in honor of Lord Baltimore's sister Lady Mary Somerset, was first established by the Colony of Maryland in 1666, it encompassed more than 16,000 square miles on the Eastern Shore, including what are today's Worcester and Wicomico Counties and part of lower Delaware. By the end of the 18th century, the county, much smaller in geography by then, had become home to more than 15,000 residents.
