It was regarded as the ""World's Largest Specialty Store."" William Filene's Sons Company was founded in 1870 and brothers Edward and Lincoln Filene were revolutionaries who championed employee relations and innovative merchandising. In 1909, Edward organized and opened Filene's famous Automatic Bargain Basement, while Lincoln helped found the Federated Department Stores Company in March 1929. Filene's was a pioneer in branch-store development.
In its heyday, the store hosted appearances by fashion designers, such as Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin, and Pauline Trigère, in addition to celebrities, like Zsa Zsa Gabor, Gloria Swanson, and Gene Autry. A victim of retail consolidation, the flagship downtown Boston store closed its doors in 2006. Its building, designed by the internationally renowned architect Daniel Burnham, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012 and anxiously awaits its redevelopment. Now, you can see some of these historic photographs that come directly from the Filene Marketing Archives at the Boston Public Library.

Cleveland and the Civil War
9781467147736
Regular price $21.99 Sale price $15.39 Save 30%Though removed from the frontlines, Cleveland played an active role in national events before, during, and after the Civil War.
President Lincoln visited this abolitionist hotbed after his 1860 election. Following his assassination five years later, his funeral train made a stop there. Cleveland and Cuyahoga County sent over 9,000 troops to war. More than 1,700 never returned. Born just outside Cleveland, James Garfield emerged from the war to become President of the United States. Most vitally, the economic prosperity of the war years began the transformation of this small but thriving village into a future manufacturing powerhouse.
Author W. Dennis Keating, member and past president of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable, creates a panoramic view of the city through one of the nation's most troubled times.
The Majesty of the Garden District Postcard Book
9781565546400
Regular price $5.95 Sale price $4.17 Save 30%Under a canopy of magnolias and live oaks, bordered by the streets of Jackson, Magazine, Louisiana, and St. Charles, spacious mansions serve as a gallery of fine architecture in a section of New Orleans known as the Garden District. Once home to a grand plantation, the property was sold and divided for residential use more than 150 years ago. Now, where fertile crops once grew, a garden of magnificent houses has come to bloom, representing one of the most characteristic features of the Crescent City.
In his final work, critically acclaimed photographer Paul Malone visits forty-three picturesque landmarks of the Garden District. With historical text provided by his wife, Lee Malone, The Majesty of the Garden District displays these remarkable homes inside and out, with an emphasis on the gracefully decorated interiors. These brilliant full-color photographs capture the history, design, and grandeur of this New Orleans neighborhood.
Among the buildings in this collection are notable homes ranging from Toby's Corner, believed to be the oldest house in the district, to the Edward Davis house, which is now more commonly known as the headquarters of the New Orleans Opera Association's Women's Guild. The Malones even veer from the usual architectural features to focus on some unusual characteristics of the borough such as Christ Church Cathedral, Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, and the world famous Commander's Palace restaurant.
The Majesty of the Garden District is the fifth book produced by Paul and Lee Malone. Paul Malone was a portrait photographer and a member of the Professional Photographers of America. Lee Malone is a former manager of the Paul Malone Photography studio in New Orleans. Their delightful collaboration of textual history and color photography has also produced Louisiana Plantation Homes: A Return to Splendor, long known as the premier photographic book of Louisiana's plantation gems and The Majesty of River Road . The Malones completed work on The Majesty of the Garden District just weeks prior to Mr. Malone's death in 1993. This book serves as a fitting tribute to his photography career.

American Prisoner of War Camps in Colorado
9781634992619
Regular price $23.99 Sale price $16.79 Save 30%American Prisoner of War Camps in Colorado describes the experiences of prisoners of war in the state, such as the story of two POWs who escaped from a camp in Trinidad. Was it treason, or were the three Japanese enemy alien sisters seduced by the German POWs who used their map? Stories of other escapes are detailed, such as two men who were shot to death as they tried to flee. All fifty-one prisoner of war camps and hospitals in Colorado during World War II are described, along with the names and burial locations of the seventeen German, Japanese, and Italian POWs who died in Colorado. These experiences are well documented through interviews with former prisoners and guards, translators, and civilians who worked with the prisoners of war. They are further documented by visitation reports from the Vatican Secret Archives, the prisoner of war files at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, and by many books and articles published after the war by former prisoners, guards, and scholars.
The generally humane treatment of the prisoners, led by the Geneva Convention of 1929, as well as the friendship formed between the prisoners and their guards and the farmers whose land they worked, was essential to the development of our current positive relationships with the countries of Germany, Italy, and Japan.
