South Carolina

Coastal South Carolina was among the first places in the New World to be settled. Among the plantations in the Charleston District, part of which was to become Berkeley County, were four overlapping the area that was later to be established as the city of Hanahan. Following the Civil War, as the plantations were broken up into many small farms and the city of Charleston expanded, a search began for a nearby, new source of fresh water to replace water from contaminated wells. That search led to Goose Creek, where, in 1903, a dam was built and a pumping station established, named Hanahan for the chairman of the Charleston Water Commission. Military installations and housing, thriving businesses, and schools began to meet the needs of the developing community. Hanahan would grow over the years and incorporate into a city in 1973, known for its beautiful landscape and community culture. Today, Hanahan is the heart of the Lowcountry in location and, most importantly, in spirit. Despite its growth, it maintains the original small-town feel, drawing and keeping people into this community that they love.

In 1968, the family-based Cherry Grove, Ocean Drive, Crescent, and Windy Hill Beaches were consolidated into one municipality, gaining a stronger presence with a new name of North Myrtle Beach. In July of 1780, when the Revolutionary War in the Southern states seemed doomed to failure, a small but important battle took place on James Williamson's plantation in what is now York County, South Carolina. The Battle of Williamson's Plantation, or ""Huck's Defeat"" as it later came to be known, laid the groundwork for the vicious partisan warfare waged by the militiamen on the Carolina frontier against the superior forces of the British Army, and it paved the way for the calamitous defeats that the British suffered at Hanging Rock, Musgrove's Mill, Kings Mountain, Blackstock's Plantation and Cowpens, all in the South Carolina backcountry. In this groundbreaking new study, historian Michael C. Scoggins provides an in-depth account of the events that unfolded in the Broad and Catawba River valleys of upper South Carolina during the critical summer of 1780. Drawing extensively on first-person accounts and military correspondence, much of which has never been published before, Scoggins tells a dramatic story that begins with the capture of an entire American army at Charleston in May and ends with a resounding series of Patriot victories in the Carolina Piedmont during the late summer of 1780---victories that set Lord Cornwallis and the British Army irrevocably on the road to defeat and to surrender at Yorktown in October 1781.

Few locations in South Carolina have figured as prominently in the early history of the state as the old town of Ninety Six. As a witness to two Revolutionary War battles, two Cherokee War battles, a trading post, three forts and two towns, the site is perhaps one of the richest archaeological sites in the South. In recognition of its rich history the Ninety Six National Historic Site became part of the National Park Service in 1976.

The unusual name that was given to the site is believed to have taken root in the early 1700s. English traders estimated the distance to the Cherokee village of Keowee in the upper South Carolina foothills to be ninety-six miles. By the 1770s, Fort Ninety Six and the adjoining village--located at the crossroads of twelve roads--reached its peak as an important backcountry outpost, boasting a growing population, a newly constructed courthouse and jail. However, the onset of the American Revolutionary War would end this progress and the first land battle south of New England was fought at Ninety Six in 1775. The fort and town would change hands many times between those fighting for independence and those still loyal to England, leaving the town in shambles by the close of the war.
