South Carolina

St. Paul's Parish is a bedroom community outside the greater historic city of Charleston, South Carolina. The parish is comprised of a series of small, close-knit communities, including Meggett, Yonges Island, Hollywood, Rantowles, Ravenel, and Adams Run. Over the years, it has been a site of key Revolutionary War battles, a mobilization point for Confederate forces, a summer vacation spot for Charlestonians, home of South Carolina's second oldest settlement, and, most importantly, an area dominated by agriculture and industry. The entire parish has been dependent on agriculture since the first settlers arrived. By the early 1900s, St. Paul's Parish had become a vegetable-growing super center that surpassed many larger cities and towns across the United States. At one point in time, Meggett was the cabbage capital of the world! Truck farming, as it was known, made the "Cabbage Patch" and its citizens world-famous and rich until the 1950s; it started to slowly decline and came to a halt in the early 1960s.

Georgetown lies just inland of the Atlantic Ocean at the upper reaches of Winyah Bay. For eons, five rivers have flowed through the countryside, offering lifeblood to a town and its people. Founded in 1729, Georgetown has seen the heights of prosperity in the indigo and rice crops and the depths of despair in the aftermath of the Civil War. Many famous names have connections here, such as Francis Marion, better known as the Swamp Fox; the Marquis de Lafayette; Thomas Lynch, a signer of the Declaration of Independence; and Vice Pres. Aaron Burr, just to name a few. Presidents and other dignitaries have visited with us over these 200-plus years and millions have luxuriated in the waters of our nearby beaches for generations.

Known for its unique beauty and complex history, South Carolina's Lowcountry is one of the South's, and the country's, most fascinating regions. A wonderful blend of picturesque coastlines, expansive marshes, mysterious swamps, and verdant landscapes, the Lowcountry has played a vital role in our nation's history, from its importance as a port in colonial times, to its strategic location during the American Revolution, to its most famous landmark, Fort Sumter--the incendiary starting point of the Confederacy's struggle for secession. In this volume, you will explore this region as never before, through a rare collection of stereoscopic images. Also called stereoviews, these twin images were made by an early photographic technique which allowed the viewer to experience a vibrant and intriguing three-dimensional effect. Simeon B. Chapin was an entrepreneur and visionary who, along with Franklin G. Burroughs, helped create the foundation of what is Myrtle Beach today. B.B. Benfield built and opened the area's first movie theater, and Lawrence Boulier was a landscape artist and founder of the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild. John Woodside built the grand Ocean Forest Hotel. Col. H.B. Springs was the town's first insurance and real estate agent, and James Bryan Sr. was the first president of Myrtle Beach Farms. Blanche Floyd was a beloved teacher and author, and W.L. Harrelson made history by serving as Myrtle Beach's first mayor. Earl Husted brought the first amusement park rides to this area, and Anthony James left after high school to make a name for himself as the first widely known actor from the Myrtle Beach area. The stories of these Myrtle Beach notables and many more fill the pages of this book. Some of these names may be unfamiliar, but each of these legendary locals, in his or her own way, has helped make Myrtle Beach the historical hometown and vacationers' paradise that it is today.

On December 19, 1801, the South Carolina legislature established the South Carolina College, one of the nation's first publicly supported institutions of higher education. In the past two centuries, the institution has evolved from a small liberal arts college with one campus into a large modern university with eight spacious campuses. Carolina's heart, however, remains firmly nestled in the site of its original campus, the historic Horseshoe. Throughout its history, Carolina has faced challenges that at times threatened its existence, including the burning of Columbia in 1865, when the destructive fire swept up to the walls of the campus. Several reorganizations and name changes culminated in the school's final reorganization in 1906 as the University of South Carolina. The university adapted to history's societal changes, including the admission of women, desegregation, and the student unrest of the 1970s. This volume draws extensively from the collections of the University of South Carolina Archives to chronicle Carolina's remarkable history through images of its founders, administrators, faculty, campus, and most importantly, its students.
