Camp Upton was one of 16 cantonments built to train soldiers quickly upon the United States' entry into World War I in 1917. The camp was located on nearly 20,000 acres of scrub pine forest on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. Later, it was a Civilian Conservation Corps camp and was rebuilt for use in World War II. It is now the site of Brookhaven National Laboratory. It was the home of the 77th "Liberty" Division, whose soldiers, many from the New York area, distinguished themselves in battle in the Argonne Forest in France near the end of the war. Its most famous soldier, Irving Berlin, wrote "God Bless America" and Yip Yip Yaphank, a "military mess," while training there.

The declaration of war in 1917 and the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, stirred the men and women of Kane County, Illinois, to action and service. Cleveland's contribution to the war front began on May 25, 1917, with the Lakeside Hospital Unit becoming the first American detachment to land in Europe. With the outbreak of World War I, industry in Southington--previously an agrarian community--grew in both size and profit. The citizens of Southington banded together to help in the war effort by joining the American Red Cross and Home Guard and selling Liberty Bonds. Industrial growth continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Though few factories closed, most were forced to reduce their workforce and hours of production. By the end of the 1930s, the nation was preparing for a war most people hoped would never happen. Factories rehired former employees and created new job opportunities, and four months after Pearl Harbor, Southington's 17 factories were working around the clock to produce wartime goods. The First World War was an unprecedented event, and some of its effects on the state of Maryland can be seen to this day. Maryland's civilian contributions included agricultural and industrial production, providing goods ranging from canned oysters to light artillery pieces.
