U.S. Army chaplain Winfield Scott and his wife, Helen, founded Scottsdale in 1888 as a small farming and ranching settlement on undeveloped desert east of Phoenix. After World War II, many people were attracted by the dry climate, desert landscape, and business opportunities. The community encouraged creativity in architecture, and Frank Lloyd Wright, Paolo Soleri, and Paul Schweikher designed buildings here. To draw tourists, the business community adopted "The West's Most Western Town" as a slogan in 1947. In 1907, William and Florence Sloane began construction on a five-room summer cottage on the banks of the Lafayette River in Norfolk. Over the course of 30 years, they would expand their home from its origins as a summer retreat into a 42-room Arts and Crafts mansion nestled on 12 acres of gardens and grounds. Bristol, originally known as West Woods, formed later than other Colonial towns. Bristol's mother town of Farmington was settled in 1640 and became a town in 1645, but pioneers did not lay out the remote and unpopulated section of Farmington until 1721. When the Henry Belin Jr. Waverly Community House and Park was dedicated in 1920, Margaretta E. Belin intended both to honor her husband and benefit residents of Abington Township. The community house was envisioned by its progressive donor as the educational, cultural, and social heart of rural Waverly. By 1930, when Margaretta and Henry's six children added land and two wings to the original building in honor of their mother, chautauquas, concerts, clubs, sports teams, and Scout troops were filling the annual calendar of events. On site, a post office provided mail delivery, a canteen supplied merchandise from ammonia to pencils, and residents of Dalton, Factoryville, Clarks Summit, and Clarks Green pumped gasoline. No activity, however, was more celebrated both locally and regionally than the annual fair that united Waverly in purpose, labor, and pleasure at summer's end. Since its inception, the Waverly Community House has set and achieved ambitious goals to enrich community life, a mission that successive generations have strived to follow.
