Yellowstone National Park contains over half the world's active geysers, with more than 700 within its 3,472 square miles. The broad valley of Jackson Hole and the ridges and slopes around what would become Jackson, Wyoming, had long been a crossroads to the region’s Indigenous peoples when fur trappers arrived in the early decades of the 19th century and made Jackson Hole a lynchpin of their continental commerce. Many came and went, but some stayed, with a settlement taking form near the banks of Flat Creek at the base of East Gros Ventre Butte. Two beloved national parks just to the north added to the flow of visitors as postwar prosperity funded new road trips and mountain vacations.

Twenty years after Cheyenne was founded by Union Pacific, the city had outgrown its three-room board-and-batten depot and began to lobby for a new, grander building that better represented the lustrous community.

They came first for the healing. Whether it was Native Americans, settlers, or early visitors, the goal was to seek relief at the "Big Spring.'? Many came, including Chief Washakie of the Eastern Shoshone, Chief Sharp Nose of the Northern Arapaho, Butch Cassidy and outlaws, Buffalo Bill, and others. They enjoy the mineral waters that originate at the Big Spring at 125-127 degrees and cool to a comfortable 104 degrees in water parks, hotels, and a state bathhouse. The Big Spring is one of the largest flowing hot mineral springs in the world.

The Wyoming State Legislature approved the formation of Park County—named in honor of Yellowstone National Park—on February 15, 1909. Early fur traders such as John Colter and George Drouillard traversed the area in the early 1800s, opening trade with the indigenous Crow and Shoshone. Immigration in the Equality State

Long before Heart Mountain Internment Camp brought Japanese prisoners to Wyoming, an immigrant work force put down lasting roots. Beginning in 1892, Japanese came to toil on Union Pacific’s railroad and coal mines. But they weren’t warmly welcomed. Newspapers charged every Japanese section worker was secret Japanese Army. Allegedly, 600 Japs in Utah, [and] about 400 in Wyoming and probably 100 in Colorado, were ready to serve Japan during the Japanese Russo War. George Wakimoto said the number was closer to six. Such misinformation about Japanese laborers spawned violence against Asians. The citizens of Evanston tried to blow them up. Rawlins ran the Japanese out of town. And in Laramie, young boys threw stones and dragged a Japanese man through the street. Author Dan Lyon chronicles Japanese perseverance, before and after both world wars, in their adopted state.
