Smyrna

9781467110891

$24.99

Smyrna began as a religious campground in the 1830s and was then settled by pioneers along the Western & Atlantic Railroad line running from Atlanta through Smyrna to Chattanooga. In the summer of 1864, the Civil War battles of Smyrna and Ruff's Mill devastated the area, but the community recovered, and the town was incorporated in August 1872. It grew as businesses opened along US Highway 41, bringing travelers to local gas stations, hotels, and diners. The Smyrna economy changed in 1942 when the Bell Aircraft Corporation began and again in the 1950s when the Lockheed Corporation took over the former Bell bomber plant. Today, Smyrna ranks as a highly desirable metropolitan Atlanta area in which to live and raise a family.

Sandy Springs

9780738566702

$24.99

Sandy Springs has always been a community in transition. Bounded to the north by the Chattahoochee River, the area was contested by both the Cherokee Nation and the Creek Confederacy, who used the river as a territorial marker. To the south, the urban center of Atlanta has blessed and, at times, cursed her rural neighbor with close proximity. Today Sandy Springs is still in transition. From a rural village to one of Georgia's newest cities, the history of Sandy Springs is a story of change.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation

9780738553290

$24.99

Located where the Altamaha River empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Brunswick, Hofwyl-Broadfield was the last of the coastal plantations to grow rice.

With welcoming views of the broad and expansive marsh, oak trees draped with moss, and a huge sky overhead, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation was home to five generations of one family. Its story involves a love of the land—fertile yet sometimes unyielding, binding to it the people who owned it and those who worked it. It was this legacy that Ophelia Dent bequeathed to the State of Georgia at her death in 1973. Her hope was that future generations would enjoy the beauty of this special place and understand how each family found a way to bestow it upon the next. The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site, operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Parks, and Historic Sites Division, captures and tells the story of a special era.

Brief History of Catoosa County, A

9781596295551

$21.99

Catoosa County's rich history touches upon many of the defining events and social changes of America's past. As settlers expanded westward, Georgia forcibly removed Native Americans from the boundaries of what would eventually form Catoosa, a Cherokee name that the settlers adopted as their own. As the site of the second most costly battle in the Civil War, Chickamauga set the stage for much that followed in Catoosa's history, from the end of a three-thousand-year-old mode of warfare to the beginnings of women's service in the military. Though nearly one million people visit Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park each year seeking to understand and connect to the Civil War struggle, many remain unaware of the larger part Catoosa played in the unfolding drama of America. Join local historian Jeff O'Bryant as he brings this valuable heritage to light.

Union County

$24.99

Nestled in the heart of the Northeast Georgia Mountains, Union County is a unique blend of modern America that maintains the charm of the legendary Appalachian era, a developing community surrounded by pristine forests, a land of scenic beauty, and friendly people. It was formed from land once inhabited by the Cherokees and came into existence in the early 1800s. Descendants of Scottish, Irish, and English lineage became the predominant settlers in the area. Many generations of "mountain people" in Union County have led lives filled with determination, endurance, resourcefulness, and self sufficiency.

Those character traits continue to be evident among those who call one of America's most scenic areas home. Part of the Chattahoochee National Forest covers approximately one-half of the land in Union County-much of it wilderness as it has been for centuries. From the mountain peaks to the lakes, along the roadways and wilderness trails, Union County features flowing streams, waterfalls, native animals, spectacular flora, and magnificent views of abundant forests. This volume will delight readers as they journey through the history of such areas as Choestoe, Arkaquah, Brasstown, Gum Log, Ivy Log, Dooley, Young Cane, Coosa, Owltown, Cooper's Creek, Gaddistown, Suches, and Blairsville. This pictorial chronicle brings to life the perseverance of those who have gone before, providing a record of their contributions and accomplishments.

Camilla

9780738553566

$24.99

In December 1857, a bill passed in the Georgia State Senate that carved out everything in Baker County to the east of the Flint River into a new county called Mitchell. It was to be named after Gen. Henry Mitchell, who had served valiantly in the Revolutionary War and had continued his public service as a leader in the Georgia legislature for many years. David West, a local resident, provided 50 acres at the center of the new territory for the organization of a new county seat and the construction of a new courthouse and other public buildings. In fewer than 12 months, construction was underway, and the town of Camilla had been incorporated. It was named after Camilla Mitchell, the 19-year-old granddaughter of General Mitchell.

The small town of Madison in Morgan County, Georgia, was once considered the South's most cultured and aristocratic town. Since the end of slavery, Morgan County's African-American community has worked hard to carve out its own history and culture "on the other side of Madison's tracks." The engaging vintage images within these pages are sure to evoke treasured memories for longtime county residents and spark an interest in history and heritage among the younger generations.
