Lowndes County, located deep in the wiregrass region of southern Georgia, has been continuously occupied since ancient times. Through the centuries, various Native American tribes inhabited the region, but they lingered relatively briefly and left few tangible traces. The area's written history began with the establishment around 1623 of the Spanish mission of Santa Cruz de Cachipile in southern Lowndes. Georgia's general assembly created Lowndes County from the southern half of Irwin County in 1825 and named it for William Jones Lowndes of South Carolina. The present county seat, Valdosta, dates from the construction of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad across Lowndes from 1859 to 1860. Ultimately the county was to have five railroads, which, combined with U.S. Highways 41 and 84 and Interstate 75, were to be major factors in dramatic local growth."

In December 1857, a bill passed in the Georgia State Senate that carved out everything in Baker County to the east of the Flint River into a new county called Mitchell. It was to be named after Gen. Henry Mitchell, who had served valiantly in the Revolutionary War and had continued his public service as a leader in the Georgia legislature for many years. David West, a local resident, provided 50 acres at the center of the new territory for the organization of a new county seat and the construction of a new courthouse and other public buildings. In fewer than 12 months, construction was underway, and the town of Camilla had been incorporated. It was named after Camilla Mitchell, the 19-year-old granddaughter of General Mitchell.

Glennville

The area that would become modern Glennville was first opened to settlement in 1773. In the early decades of the 19th century, settlers converged around the intersection of Hencart Road and Reidsville-Johnston's Station Road. The community that grew around this intersection came to be known as Philadelphia--a name it would hold until 1889, when the village's first post office was established. The village was then renamed after a prominent schoolteacher and minister, Glenn Thompson, who was instrumental in securing the post office for the village. The city of Watkinsville was founded in 1801. By 1819, there were two churches, two hotels, three stores, and a score of dwellings. The arrival of the Central of Georgia Railway in 1888 and the fact that Watkinsville is the county seat helped the city grow. By 1940, the population was 558. The community had grown to include two more churches, a high school, a radio shop, a hardware store, a gas station, a café, several general stores, a beauty shop, and a drugstore with a soda fountain. The photographs in this book are part of the Bobby Gordon Collection and were taken during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Robert Sydney Gordon was born on August 19, 1923. As a teenager, he became interested in photography and obtained a used camera. He grew up in Watkinsville, graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in business administration, and served during World War II as a radio operator with the 106th Cavalry.
