Smyrna began as a religious campground in the 1830s and was then settled by pioneers along the Western & Atlantic Railroad line running from Atlanta through Smyrna to Chattanooga. In the summer of 1864, the Civil War battles of Smyrna and Ruff's Mill devastated the area, but the community recovered, and the town was incorporated in August 1872. It grew as businesses opened along US Highway 41, bringing travelers to local gas stations, hotels, and diners. Established in 1790, Elbert County was carved from adjacent Wilkes County and named in honor of American patriot and former governor Samuel Elbert.

Located in Northeast Georgia on the Savannah and Broad Rivers, the territory witnessed Revolutionary War fighting and the creation of Fort James, Dartmouth, and Petersburg, occurring all before 1790. Later Ruckersville, Heardmont, Bowman, and Dewy Rose were established. In the 20th century, cotton production was overshadowed by the growth of granite quarrying and finishing, leading to Elberton becoming the ""Granite Capital of the World.""

In December 1857, a bill passed in the Georgia State Senate that carved out everything in Baker County to the east of the Flint River into a new county called Mitchell. It was to be named after Gen. Henry Mitchell, who had served valiantly in the Revolutionary War and had continued his public service as a leader in the Georgia legislature for many years. David West, a local resident, provided 50 acres at the center of the new territory for the organization of a new county seat and the construction of a new courthouse and other public buildings. In fewer than 12 months, construction was underway, and the town of Camilla had been incorporated. It was named after Camilla Mitchell, the 19-year-old granddaughter of General Mitchell.

Glennville

The area that would become modern Glennville was first opened to settlement in 1773. In the early decades of the 19th century, settlers converged around the intersection of Hencart Road and Reidsville-Johnston's Station Road. The community that grew around this intersection came to be known as Philadelphia—a name it would hold until 1889, when the village's first post office was established. The village was then renamed after a prominent schoolteacher and minister, Glenn Thompson, who was instrumental in securing the post office for the village. Glennville was incorporated as a town in 1894 and continued to grow remarkably through the coming decades until it became the commercial and agricultural hub of Tattnall County.
