Ligonier Valley Vignettes

9781609495824

$21.99

Secluded between Laurel Mountain and Chestnut Ridge, the Ligonier Valley has been the mountain playground of western Pennsylvania since the nineteenth century. Yet this picturesque retreat was at the tumultuous center of history--during the French and Indian War, Fort Ligonier was key to the British strategy, and in the late nineteenth century, the Ligonier Valley Rail Road helped transform the industry of the region. Author Jennifer Sopko traces the story of the valley and its residents through a series of fascinating vignettes. From the earliest histories to nostalgic reminiscences of the Ligonier Opera House, socials at the Valley Dairy ice cream parlor and bygone days at Idlewild Park, Sopko captures the history and spirit of the Ligonier Valley and its communities.

Crime, Corruption & Politics in Hull

9781596291263

$21.99

If you lived in Hull, Massachusetts, during the first four decades of the twentieth century, you were susceptible to two forces: the political machinations of Boss John Smith and the vitriolic editorial columns of Hull Beacon publisher Floretta Vining. Smith ran the town with an iron fist through fixed elections, padlocked town meetings, kickbacks, graft and bribes. Vining reported on it all and fought it like no other Progressive Era woman could, using newsprint space to lash out at girls who chewed gum in public and small boys who made too much noise at night, and calling for old men over sixty years of age to simply be put to sleep. Hull Times contributor and local historian John Galluzzo brings back the days of Vining and Smith, of steamboats and trains, of Paragon Park and the grand hotels of Nantasket Beach. In this accessible history, the reader gets a ringside seat to some of the most heated political battles in the history of the South Shore, fought in town halls and occasionally spilling into the streets of the once quiet and peaceful Hull Village.

Historic Tales of the Harlem Valley

9781467152075

$23.99

New York's Harlem Valley, with the last stops on the Metro-North train line from Manhattan, has an incredibly eclectic history for a predominantly agricultural region .

A Victorian utopian community claiming to see fairies settled in Wassaic, attracting Japanese samurai and remaking the townscape of Amenia. An early version of the “Borscht Belt” began on the shores of Lake Amenia, where a once-thriving resort community vanished along with the lake itself. Amidst a crisis of dwindling membership, the NAACP was brought together at major conferences held at Amenia’s Troutbeck estate, owned by Joel Spingarn, the organization’s first Jewish president. Young graduates from the Rhode Island School of design and other art schools launched the Wassaic Project, a festival and art residency using a converted agricultural grain elevator as their venue.

Author Tonia Shoumatoff presents these and other fascinating stories from Life at the End of the Line in the Harlem Valley.

The town's early history of wintry hardships, courageous settlers and rebellious farmers sets the stage for a saga of spirited and creative personalities. As this energetic individualism carried over into the twentieth century, the sounds of cow horns and tin pails gave way to the bacchanalian revelry of Maverick music festivals and the wailing guitar of Bob Dylan. The first hippie came to town in 1963, and within a few years this Colony of the Arts was swept up by the counterculture movement of the '60s. In this collection of essays from the Historical Society of Woodstock archives, Richard Heppner captures the unique spirit of Woodstock, where the individual is always welcome and new and creative beginnings are always possible.

Writings of the Islands

9781596290044

$14.99

The islands and Lowcountry history are virtually synonymous. Here were the earliest watchtowers of the 1670s when pirates roamed the coastline. Here rang out the sounds of the great Revolutionary War victories won from the palmetto parapets of Fort Sullivan. It was from the inlet that separates the two islands that the Hunley sailed on its fateful mission against the Housatonic and into legend. And here, in the glory days of the late nineteenth century, the trolley line brought visitors from the world over to the islands' majestic resort hotels. Indeed, Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms are unparalleled for the role they have played in the development of the Lowcountry and of our nation. Here are hurricanes, wars, the famous and the infamous--presented delightfully, sometimes with poignancy, and always with a reverence for the history of these extraordinary islands.

Remembering the Way it Was at Beaufort, Sheldon and the Sea Islands

9781596291362

$21.99

Not long ago, Beaufort County, South Carolina was a quiet, sparsely populated corner of the Old South where the residents were just as likely to travel by tidal creek as they were so slog down the county's dusty, track-worn roads. Generations came and went like the tidal ebb and flow, and eventually Beaufort County—like much of the Lowcountry—was the site of much development, which brought changes to the face and pace of the area. Life in Beaufort County is different now, but many of the old ways have been kept alive in the county's oral histories—stories that have been passed down over time, preserving the past through spoken word.

Now, author and journalist Fran Marscher has captured these rich, vibrant stories for all to enjoy.

Remembering the Way it Was at Beaufort, Sheldon and the Sea Islands is a collection of these priceless oral histories, which offer a glimpse of simpler times and unspoiled landscapes that cannot be found anywhere else. In their own words, the residents of old Beaufort County reveal a time when turnips and scrawny chickens substituted for legal fees among some of the clients of Grace White, the county's first female attorney; when Henry Chambers' Aunt Henrietta—rumored locally to be the richest woman in the world, and an Italian princess to boot—stunned everyone when she brought her magnificent yacht right up the Beaufort River. And much, much more.

Warwick's Villages

9781596295995

$21.99

Since Samuel Gorton's first settlers on the Conimicut shore agreed to live without formal government, the villages of Warwick have been fiercely independent. Despite their individualism, however, their histories are inextricably bound. The ravages of King Philip's War left no village unscathed, as settlers lost their houses, livestock and even their lives. England's trade laws forced these seafaring people to smuggle rum out of Mill Cove, and the famous 1772 burning of the British Gaspee near Pawtuxet ignited the flame of protest across Rhode Island. Tracing the history of five villages, Warwick's beloved historian Donald D'Amato reveals how Rhode Island's second-largest city has retained the feel of a small, close-knit community.
