Evansville in World War II
9781626196759
Regular price $21.99 Sale price $15.39 Save 30%During World War II, the city of Evansville manufactured vast amounts of armaments that were vital to the Allied victory.
The Evansville Ordnance Plant made 96 percent of all .45-caliber ammunition used in the war, while the Republic Aviation Plant produced more than 6,500 P-47 Thunderbolts - almost half of all P-47s built during the war. At its peak, the local shipyard employed upward of eighteen thousand men and women who forged 167 of the iconic Landing Ship Tank vessels. In this captivating and fast-paced account, University of Evansville historian James Lachlan MacLeod reveals the enormous influence these wartime industries had on the social, economic and cultural life of the city.
Abandoned Anderson, Indiana

Regular price $23.99 Sale price $16.79 Save 30%forms of employment move out of the area; in 1912, their sources
of natural gas were depleted causing the factories that employed
most of the town to close their doors and move onto other areas of
the United States to continue their business. Once General Motors
moved in, things started looking up for the city. However, like many
other automobile industry boomtowns in the Rust Belt, once the
industry was outsourced to other countries and the plants closed,
the population fled for greener pastures. The once vibrant city was
left to decay. Schools that once vibrated with the laughter of kids
were left without students; clubs once filled with laughter and joy
were forgotten in the face of overwhelming poverty; hotels that
housed those traveling through were shuttered and turned into
cheap housing before eventually being closed by the city; and
shopping malls that once had thousands of customers were largely
forgotten as the anchor stores closed for lack of profits. A place that
once housed over 70,000 citizens has lost over 20% of the
population since the deindustrialization of the 1970s and 1980s.

Terre Haute’s Notorious Red Light District
9781467151306
Regular price $21.99 Sale price $15.39 Save 30%The author of Hidden History of Terre Haute and Wicked Terre Haute explores the home of sin in the Sin City.
Home to uproarious saloons, swindling gambling dens, and thriving brothels, Terre Haute's infamous West End was so wild the Chicago Tribunecalled it "the scene of a hundred all night carousings.'? Pimps, pickpockets, and conmen roamed the crowded streets where legendary Madam Edith Brown's pleasure palace was the crown jewel of brothels. Yet more than a mere den in inequity, the West End was also a community that could put bickering differences aside and pull together to help their neighbors. And it wasn't only a place for seedy enterprise, but also a place for stores, cafes, and homes.
Historian Tim Crumrin presents the first complete history of this legendary area and separates myth from reality to reveal the very human side of the West End.

Ohio River Towns of Indiana
9781634994972
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%Taken from the Iroquois word, Oyo, meaning "The Great River," the Ohio River stretches through Indiana for over 300 miles. From Lawrenceburg in the north to Evansville in the south, the river winds through towns both rich in history and long forgotten. The Ohio River is a border separating the northern states from the southern. While many structures from bygone eras have been maintained, others have been left to decay and fade away. With the invention of automobiles and later interstate travel, the population of some river towns dwindled as people moved to more urban areas closer to new highways. The towns were left behind. From decaying homes to a 200-year-old courthouse, a captain's tomb overlooking the river to an old lock and dam building rotting from disuse, each structure left behind and long forgotten tells its own eerie story.
Abandoned Eastern Indiana
9781634994903
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%When exploring the abandoned, it is important to plot out multiple destinations and use the back roads. In Eastern Indiana, author Amanda Bennett-Cole was fortunate to discover antiquated houses, schools, and even a church. Exploring Eastern Indiana required numerous eight-hour road trips through several small towns that are no longer depicted on maps. A small town's survival depended on these roads before highways were built. Once upon a time, towns popped up all throughout the country along the railroad lines that connected the country's coasts. Rich agriculture and peaceful meadows in Indiana have given place to villages with cobblestone main streets and lush residential neighborhoods. The ruins of the buildings and landscapes that earlier generations left behind, from the Federal-style buildings of an early pike town to the drive-ins and 1940s-era eateries, enable you to trace the nation's westward expansion.

With dozens of unsolved murders spanning decades, Muncie and surrounding Delaware County might have more killings without justice than any American community like it. In 1962, Maggie Mae Fleming was shot to death as she sat in her living room. Paula Garrett was bludgeoned in her home in 1979, and her son, who survived the attack, wants justice. Garth Rector, killed in 2008, could have been murdered by any number of people he knew--or dated.
Journalists and award-winning true crime authors Douglas Walker and Keith Roysdon shine a spotlight on the victims, and on their loved ones and the investigators still hoping for resolution to long-cold murders.

This simple community came to have an immense impact on our country's art and architecture, public education system, women's suffrage movement, Midwestern industrial development, and more. This book contains over 150 historic images produced by two 19th-century New Harmony photographers--Homer Fauntleroy and William Frederick Lichtenberger. These photographs show historic buildings of New Harmony, many of which have been razed over the years. They also demonstrate the importance of the Wabash River and its influence on settlement and commerce. The people of the community are captured at work and at play, and the reader is allowed a look at the downtown business district of the past and the farms surrounding it.
Hidden History of Mishawaka

Regular price $21.99 Sale price $15.39 Save 30%Remembering the rich past of the Princess City
Mishawaka's history overflows with forgotten stories of people and events that shaped the city and even influenced the nation. The city celebrated one of its most exciting days on July 5, 1909, when thousands watched a massive parade and the dedication of Hotel Mishawaka. A timeless but overlooked photograph captured the patriotism of brave volunteers as they left to fight in World War I on May 10, 1917. The 1926-27 Mishawaka High basketball team made the school's only appearance in the state finals. During the Vietnam War, Talos missiles manufactured in town struck North Vietnam and avenged a captured local pilot.
Author Peter J. De Kever brings to life these and other stories from the Mishawaka of yesteryear.

The town grew as people built businesses with the abundant resources that were available. Meanwhile, Franklin Township was developing into one of the best farming communities in the southern part of the state. Farmers took great pride in their homesteads, and many families still farm the land that gave life to so many generations before them. They worshiped in their churches, they built the schools that educated their children, and they prospered.
