The first recorded Jewish immigrants arrived in New York in 1654 by way of Brazil. Their assimilation and influence on the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, and the continual influx of Jewish immigrants from Germany, Eastern Europe, and Russia, have provided a rich tapestry of historic sites in New York. Author Paul M. Kaplan has written more than a mere travel guide; he has provided a road map to the history of Jewish immigration in this great American city. With a focus on the communities of Manhattan, Kaplan includes museums, places of historic interest, restaurants, synagogues, and entertainment venues of the present and those that no longer exist.

Alive in vintage photos, these sites are divided by their location, traveling from the south to the farthest northern tip of Manhattan. Each section provides a map of the area and a broad introduction to the district's place in the historic timeline of Jewish immigration. Included are the regions known as Lower Manhattan; the Lower East Side; Greenwich Village and the East Village, Chelsea, and Midtown; the Upper East Side and Upper West Side; Harlem and Morningside Heights; and Washington Heights. The author provides suggested itineraries, tips for the visitor, and reference notes for further exploration. Kaplan's historical introduction provides the framework for locals and visitors of every religion and nationality to delve into the rich history and contribution of Jewish immigrants in New York.

The Diary of Asser Levy

$10.95

“The book breathes life into a little-known yet important Jewish figure of early New Amsterdam and New York. Through a series of diary entries based on fact and the author’s creation, the author brings out the emotion, drama, and conflicts of Asser Levy’s turbulent journey to a new land in search of religious freedom. Chronicling much of the mid-1650s, the diary entries depict the ship’s arrival to New Amsterdam only to be turned away. It tells the tale, through fictional accounts combined with historical fact, of Asser’s becoming the first kosher butcher in the new land. The book will add color to classroom lessons on early US history and on Jewish immigration.” —Paul Kaplan, author of Lillian Wald: America’s Great Social and Healthcare Reformer, Jewish New York: A History and Guide to Neighborhoods, Synagogues, and Eateries, and Jewish South Florida: A History and Guide to Neighborhoods, Synagogues, and Eateries For twenty-four years the Dutch colony of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil was a safe haven for Jews who had escaped the Inquisition in Europe. Recife, its capital, was known as “Colonial Jerusalem,” and it was in this religiously tolerant town that Asser Levy grew up. When the Portuguese recaptured the territory in 1654, they brought the Inquisition and its torments with them, forcing Asser and his family and friends to flee to Holland. About fifteen ships arrive safely in Holland; Asser’s ship does not. Through imagined diary entries based on real events, Asser tells the harrowing story of the Jewish refugees who arrived on the island of Manhattan and of some of the first court battles fought to allow religious freedom in America. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, author Daniela Weil is a descendant of Jews who immigrated to South America after fleeing the Holocaust in Europe. Her own connection to Jewish refugees sparked a desire to learn and share more of the history of the first Jews who arrived in America.

On August 6, 1945, everything changed for the people of Hiroshima. Based on true accounts from survivors, this powerful historical novel recounts how an unexpected act of generosity helped the children of Hiroshima’s Honkawa Elementary School rebuild their lives and spark a friendship between the peoples of Japan and the United States. “A wonderful and powerful book that brought back the most unbelievable and painful memories of my childhood. The main character, Hana-chan, and I share many things, especially her sadness and longing for the mother and sister she lost in the bombing of Hiroshima. But the pain of her loss is beautifully balanced by the stories of the children huddled around a cold stove in their leaky classroom, their friendship and vitality, and the gifts they later receive from America. To this day I remember the colorful American marbles they sent and how badly I wanted some. This story has kept our memories alive again. Despite the terrible events of World War II, a beautiful friendship bloomed between Japan and America. I am certain that this book will contribute to world peace.” —Toshimi Ishida, survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima, former student of Honkawa Elementary School “An eloquent tale of the human consequences of the war and shows the undying strength of human love even in the face of hardship and conflict.” —Harriet Fulbright, former executive director of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities

"An effort of genius." -George Washington to Thomas Jefferson, 1785

The world's first submarine was used during the American Revolution. While other men his age supported the country with muskets, Yale graduate David Bushnell sought the answer to one important question: how to defend America against the British Royal Navy. His answer was the American Turtle. Focusing on the vessel's most important mission, sinking Britain's flagship in New York harbor, this concise history follows the development of the invention from drawing table to open water and onwards.
