Baltimore in Vintage Postcards

9780738502427

$24.99

From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this golden age can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of Baltimore, Maryland, showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available.

Grove City

9780738535555

$24.99

In 1798, Valentine Cunningham dammed Wolf Creek in a wild Pennsylvania landscape for the purpose of starting a mill. By 1876, when Isaac Ketler came to start the nationally recognized Grove City College, it was a thriving village known as Pine Grove. Flowing outward from Cunningham's mill, the area now known as Grove City doubled in size, and it doubled again during the early twentieth century. Marketing slogans such as Where Industry and Education Unite and No saloons described the expanding town. Prohibitionist sentiments peaked when local tycoon Edwin Fithian ran for U.S. senator on the Prohibition ticket in the 1920s. All the while in the background, Wolf Creek provided the city with inspiration, energy, and recreation and was even once set ablaze. Grove City looks back at the rich history of this growing Pennsylvania community.

Yorktown

9780738555270

$24.99

Yorktown is one of the northernmost towns in Westchester County. This volume of vintage postcards draws from a time when the railroad was a predominant fixture in the community and travelers flocked to summer hotels and lakeside bungalow colonies. Often thought of as ephemera, something to be used and thrown away, postcard images have proven over time to be a valuable document of a time and place. For those who were visitors and those who received postcards, these striking images capture the past in terms of Yorktown's architecture, entertainment, commerce, and community.

Somerset County in Vintage Postcards

9780738513720

$24.99

When Somerset County, named in honor of Lord Baltimore's sister Lady Mary Somerset, was first established by the Colony of Maryland in 1666, it encompassed more than 16,000 square miles on the Eastern Shore, including what are today's Worcester and Wicomico Counties and part of lower Delaware. By the end of the 18th century, the county, much smaller in geography by then, had become home to more than 15,000 residents. Communities such as Crisfield, Deal Island, Princess Anne, Smith Island, and others have thrived since that time, with the industries of agriculture, seafood, and tourism sustaining the hardworking and spirited residents who have made their home in this county by the Chesapeake Bay.

Around Galeton and Coudersport

9780738557199

$24.99

Potter County's abundance of forests in the late 1800s played a large part in making the town of Williamsport the lumber capital of the world. To the north, Galeton had one of the largest sawmills in the country and was the railroad hub of the county. Austin, Cross Fork, Germania, Shinglehouse, Harrison Valley, and other area towns also contributed a great deal during the logging era. There were sawmills, kindling wood factories, hub factories, stave and heading mills, and tanneries in almost every town in the county. Around Galeton and Coudersport showcases a large collection of vintage postcards of Potter County, opening a window back through time and providing a glimpse of life during the formation of the county.

Hammonton

9780738557861

$24.99

By its own admission, Hammonton has always been a small town with big-city aspirations. Founded by New England farmers in 1866, Italian immigrants later settled in the town, and the two groups found they had much in common. Both cultures embraced the importance of family values, a trait that is still honored to this day. Consequently, the community boasts big-town characteristics while amicably maintaining a genuine small-town ambiance. Hammonton's convenient southern New Jersey location, midway between Atlantic City and Philadelphia, earned it the nickname the Hub of South Jersey, where 20,000 cars a day pass through its quaint downtown.

Around Cooperstown in Vintage Postcards

9780738504704

$24.99

Best known today as the Home of Baseball, Cooperstown and the Otsego Lake area are rich in history and, unlike many places, much of this heritage remains intact. Thus, the Cooperstown area is said to offer us a step back in time. You will not find any fast-food restaurants or chain stores here. A majority of the original buildings are still in use, serving as small shops, offices, banks, and other businesses. Each of the nearby villages—Cherry Valley, Springfield, Milford, Hartwick, and Index—has its own incredible architecture and its own story to tell. Otsego Lake is the famed Glimmerglass in the writings of Cooperstown's favorite son, James Fenimore Cooper. The area also boasts the Glimmerglass Opera, the Leatherstocking Golf Course, and historical museums, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Eastern Montgomery County Revisited

9780738538396

$24.99

Montgomery County was incorporated in 1784, though much of the area was settled in the late 1600s and early 1700s through land grants by Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn. Located immediately northwest of Philadelphia, the Quaker city has always influenced the county. Wealthy mansions, religious institutions, colleges, and industry all have contributed to the fabric of the county. Eastern Montgomery County Revisited explores this scenic and historic area with rare postcards from 1905 to 1970 and is meant to be a companion to Eastern Montgomery County. Although this book visits many favorite and familiar parts of the county, great emphasis has been placed on smaller, lesser-known places that truly make this book intriguing and unique.

Around Montgomery

9780738557663

$24.99

Incorporated in 1887, Montgomery is the youngest borough in Lycoming County, yet it possesses a deeply rich and proud history. Nestled between Black Hole and White Deer Valleys, it was once a bustling industrial community heralded as the "best small town on the Susquehanna." The images in Around Montgomery show rare scenes of Alvira, a community well established for over a century before meeting its tragic end in the 1940s, as well as glimpses of Devitt's Camp, a rural retreat for tuberculosis patients. This volume highlights the first 50 years of the borough and depicts the people and places that made up the dynamic history of Montgomery and its neighboring communities.

Clearfield

9780738511139

$24.99

Cearfield brings to life a time when carriages traveled the streets, lumber floated down the river, William Jennings Bryan visited Curwensville, Houtzdale's "Alley Popper" railway was running, and people enjoyed fine dining and dancing at the Dimeling Hotel. Postcards, once a convenient and easy way to communicate, inadvertently became an important way of preserving history. The cards of this exciting new collection bear witness to many moments in Clearfield history, including World War I soldiers marching down Market Street, the 1936 flood, the collapse of the Nichols Street Bridge, and the aftermath of the Opera House fire.

Wawarsing

9780738562605

$24.99

Established in 1806, the town of Wawarsing is located in the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County. The town is comprised of many small hamlets, as well as the village of Ellenville. The abundance of mountain streams provided electricity to run factories, and in the early 1900s, these communities were flourishing. The Delaware and Hudson Canal opened in 1828 and provided a venue for factories to transport goods. Following the close of the canal in 1898, the Ontario and Western Railroad took over, shuttling summer vacationers from New York City. The vintage postcards in Wawarsing provide views of the Delaware and Hudson Canal, the Ontario and Western Railroad, and a glimpse back to a quieter time when the mountain and valley landscape provided picturesque locations for lovely hotels and boardinghouses.

River Towns of the Delaware Water Gap

9780738563510

$24.99

As early as 1829, Antoine Dutot saw potential for a profitable resort industry at the Delaware Water Gap and began construction of the first Kittatinny House overlooking the Delaware River. After the arrival of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad in 1856, other hostelries of various sizes and appointments followed and were soon filled each summer with happy vacationers from New York City and Philadelphia. Residents of surrounding villages on both sides of the Delaware River also shared the seasonal wealth of this natural playground, yet they still managed to make a living during the rest of the year. River Towns of the Delaware Water Gap salutes the grand hotels, their diminutive "little sisters," and the people who ran them or lived in the gap and its neighboring river towns.

Amityville

9780738576633

$24.99

Amityville, a small, close-knit community located on the south shore of Long Island, was originally referred to as Huntington West Neck South. A more proper name was adopted in 1846 when, after a particularly unruly village meeting, the wife of a prominent local businessman cried, What this meeting needs is a little amity. Amityville depicts the history of the friendly bay village, from its early days of salt hay that once grew abundantly along the shoreline, through the nearly forgotten era of its grand Victorian-style seaside hotels, to the present-day role it plays as a suburban oasis of metropolitan New York. Selected from the archives of the Amityville Historical Society and several private individuals, the postcards in Amityville reveal wide tree-lined boulevards, waterfront vistas, and gracious century-old homes, while depicting the daily comings and goings of early residents and famed visitors alike.

Jefferson County

9781467127202

$24.99

Situated among the rolling hills of north central Pennsylvania, Jefferson County was formed in 1804. Brookville became the county seat in 1830 by virtue of its location at the confluence of the North Fork Creek and Sandy Lick Creek, forming Redbank Creek, and its centrality in the more than 1,000 square miles that comprised the original county. Settlers timbered, farmed, and rafted products to market when water was high. With the completion of the Allegheny Valley low-grade railroad in 1874 and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad in 1882, mining dominated the area. Rail transportation made possible the development of glass, iron, silk, sheet metal, clothing, and furniture factories. During World War II, several companies manufactured materials in support of the Allies. Today, timbering flourishes, as do the powdered metal and glass container industries. The Allegheny National and Cook forests to the north and historic Brookville, Punxsutawney Phil, and the nationally renowned Coolspring Power Museum all attract many tourists.

Morristown

9780738592800

$24.99

The seat of Morris County, Morristown began as a small rural settlement centered around a common green. The small village soon earned its place in American history when George Washington chose to make Morristown the site of his headquarters twice during the Revolutionary War. Just a few decades later, history was made again when Samuel Morse made Alfred Vail his partner in developing the telegraph at Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown. The town continued to grow as successive immigrant groups created ethnic enclaves. The Gilded Age came to Morristown, and by 1900, dozens of millionaires called the community home and brought the trappings of wealth, from lavish homes to social clubs. Today, while Morristown continues to evolve, numerous historic sites and museums document its rich past.

Spring City and Royersford

9780738512112

$24.99

In 1824, the completion of the Schuylkill Canal gave birth to Spring City, and the opening of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad in Royersford soon followed. Spring City and Royersford, through more than two hundred vintage postcards, shares the history of these sister towns: the stove factories, glassworks, and knitting mills that were found on both sides of the river; the floods, fires, and train wrecks that the towns endured; and the bridges, schools, and celebrations that help unite the two communities.

Old Forge

9780738511733

$24.99

Old Forge: Gateway to the Adirondacks is a pictorial history of the transformation of an eighteenth-century lakeside clearing in the wilderness into one of the premier recreational destinations in New York State's six-million-acre Adirondack Park. It is also the story of man's struggle with and passion for the natural world. During the nineteenth century, only a handful of rugged pioneer settlers and sportsmen endured the harrowing, inhospitable twenty-five-mile trek through the foothills of the Adirondack wild forests to the Old Forge lake region. Today, tens of thousands of camp owners and visitors come to share with local residents the magnificent landscapes of the Fulton Chain of Lakes and surrounding hamlets of McKeever, Okara, Thendara, Rondaxe, Big Moose, Eagle Bay, Inlet, and the Stillwater-Beaver River region.

Saugerties

9780738572666

$24.99

Saugerties, nestled between Esopus Creek and the Hudson River on one side and the Catskill Mountains on the other, is an old village first settled by the Dutch. Following the opening of the Erie Canal, industrialist Henry Barclay set into motion plans to use the area's waterpower to turn Saugerties into an industrial community. The village became home to the Ulster Iron Works and Barclay's paper mill, and a rich supply of some of the world's most beautiful bluestone was discovered. Sidewalks for Boston and New York City came from the quarries in the area, and the blossoming industry caused Saugerties to grow from approximately 20 families in 1825 to over 4,000 citizens by the 1880s. Today the village of Saugerties is lined with beautiful Victorian buildings and is home to the first business district in the country to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Brooklyn

9780738535319

$24.99

Between 1905 and 1907, Brooklyn's leading newspaper, the Daily Eagle, published a remarkable series of almost five hundred postcards, most with photographs of local scenes. Brooklyn in that era was, as it is today, a place of great variety, with imposing factories, sprawling riverfront sugar refineries, scores of public schools, elaborate mansions, and hundreds of blocks of middle-class brownstone row houses side by side with public wood yards, free-floating baths, the county jail, reformatories, and hospitals. Brooklyn was known as the borough of churches, and grand religious edifices of all denominations stood on nearly every corner. For recreation, there were social clubs, acres of beautifully landscaped public parks graced by statues of heroes of the past, and the teeming midways and beaches of Coney Island. All of this is captured in Brooklyn: The Brooklyn Daily Eagle Postcards 1905-1907.

This strategic location also made Salisbury the distribution point for goods coming south, an advantage that placed the region at the center of the state's economic boom. In 1867, Wicomico County was formed and Salisbury was chosen as the county seat. In the 20th century, Salisbury prospered into a communication and financial center for all of lower Maryland.

Cumberland Valley

$24.99

Explore the rich history of Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania, and its surrounding areas.

Nestled between the Tuscarora and Blue Ridge Mountains is the center of the Cumberland Valley, an area settled by men and women who crossed the Susquehanna River and built their log cabins in the wilderness. These early settlers were hardy souls who confronted the hardships and struggles of Native American raids, the American Revolution, and the Civil War. The late Victorian resorts of Pen Mar, Monterey, and Buena Vista drew visitors to the valley. Today, within the mountain-protected borders of Mother Cumberland, are the towns of Chambersburg, Mercersburg, Waynesboro, Greencastle, St. Thomas and other small communities each with a rich history of its own.

Its reputation as a railroad town began to fade after World War II, ending with the demise of the railroad by the 1970s. In its place, Guthrie Healthcare now provides the strongest influence on the town. Today the hospital's position in Sayre is as important as the railroad was in its heyday, both serving as the keystones of a town that thousands call home.

St. Mary's County

9781467123396

$24.99

For nearly four centuries, St. Mary's County has been called the land of pleasant living. The county's fertile fields and pristine waters invite visitors and natives alike to revel, relax, and renew. As the Mother County of Maryland, St. Mary's has a rich written history dating from 1634, when George and Leonard Calvert established the first American settlement founded on the principle of religious tolerance. After surviving British raids during the War of 1812 and divided loyalties in the Civil War, the county leapt into the modern era when the US Navy established Naval Air Station Patuxent River, the Navy's premier flight test center and test pilot school. Today, millions of Americans trace their roots to Southern Maryland and are welcomed home as Sons and Daughters of Old St. Mary's.
