After the arrival of the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad in 1852, Whitewater became a regional shipping center that blossomed into a powerful industrial town. The Esterly Harvesting Machine Company and the Winchester and Partridge Wagon Works established their first factories in Whitewater after the coming of the Milwaukee and Mississippi. Their manufactured goods were known around the country for exceptional quality. A myriad of new inventions and patents came from Whitewater's business population, and Whitewater's farmers and dairymen consistently won prizes for their produce, while its factories produced reapers and wagons that won national competitions. In the 1890s, however, development suddenly stopped and Whitewater lost its economic clout in a few short years. This book explains what happened to Whitewater.

Beginning around 1865, as the fledgling art and science of photography began to appear in cities and towns across the United States, a small group of photographers, using new methods and equipment developed a few years before in Europe, began producing and offering for sale stereographic views of the people, places, and events that made up daily life in the then nearly 40-year-old city of Grand Rapids. Over 150 years ago, the area now known as Chadron was vast, open grassland. Nearby water sources, Chartran Creek and Bordeaux Creek, were named for the French fur traders whose main customers were nomadic tribes the French called the Sioux. The area of Amalthea, better known as Central College, was platted by Timothy Lee in 1816. Situated three miles southeast of Westerville, Central College was built along Big Walnut Creek. A college known as the Blendon Institute was formed in 1832. In 1842, the institute was given to the Presbyterian church to form the Central College of Ohio. However, due to financial struggles, the school--later known as Central College Academy--closed in 1894. The Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association purchased the defunct school property and created the Ohio Home for the Aged and Infirm Deaf; it was the first home of its kind in the state. The village of Central College filled with excitement when the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon and Delaware Railroad was slated to pass through town in 1873. However, the railroad announced that it would instead pass through Westerville, and because of the lack of public transportation through Central College, the town failed to grow.

This photographic journal traces Bloomingdale's development chronologically from its earliest days through its sesquicentennial celebration. The area claimed in 1833 by the Meacham brothers, who traveled from the east in search of land and opportunities, encompassed parts of present-day Roselle, Medinah, and Cloverdale. The Meacham brothers and those who followed formed an agricultural community that thrived in its location on a major thoroughfare, the Chicago Galena Highway. Retail was an important part of Bloomingdale by the time the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad came through the northern part of Bloomingdale Township in 1873.
