After the Battle of Perryville in October 1862, the focus of the Civil War in the West shifted back to Tennessee. The Union Army of the Cumberland regrouped in Nashville, while the Confederate Army of Tennessee camped 30 miles away in Murfreesboro. On December 26 the Federals marched southward and fought a three-day brawl at Stones River with their Confederate counterparts. The Confederates withdrew, and both armies spent the winter and spring harassing each other and regrouping for the next round. In the Confederate camp, dissention corroded the army's high command. The critical engagement at Stones River (by percentage of loss the Civil War's bloodiest battle) and the masterful Tullahoma operation will receive detailed attention in this journey through the historic moment in time.

The school that eventually became the University of Tennessee was founded as one of the first three colleges established west of the Appalachians.

In 1794, two years before Tennessee even became a state, the legislature of the Southwest Territory established Blount College with a charter, and the small school struggled with a tiny student body and even smaller staff before changing its name to East Tennessee College in 1807. As the college grew, the trustees of the school scouted potential sites in Knoxville, settling on the site affectionately called "The Hill'? in 1828, and changing its name once again in 1840 to East Tennessee University. During the Civil War, classes came to an abrupt halt as students and faculty were recruited to serve on battlefields, and troops used campus facilities as hospitals and barracks. With a final name change in 1879, the University of Tennessee has exploded in growth in the 20th century, with campuses and programs across the state. In addition to a rich sports tradition, the University of Tennessee is considered one of the best colleges in the Southeast, and among the best institutions of higher learning in the country.

The Tennessee Campaign of November and December 1864 was the Southern Confederacy's last significant offensive operation of the Civil War.

General John Bell Hood of the Confederate Army of Tennessee attempted to capture Nashville, the final realistic chance for a battlefield victory against the Northern juggernaut. Hood's former West Point instructor, Major General George Henry Thomas, led the Union force, fighting those who doubted him in his own army as well as Hood's Confederates. Through the bloody, horrific battles at Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville and a freezing retreat to the Tennessee River, Hood ultimately failed. Civil War historian James R. The Natchez Trace is one of the oldest trails in North America. In 1801, President Jefferson ordered the Army to build a road along the trail to provide a route for moving troops and delivering mail. Jefferson dispatched soldiers down the road in 1803 to protect the Louisiana Purchase, and Andrew Jackson and his troops followed it to battle the British in the War of 1812. As an 1800-era link between Nashville, Tennessee, and Natchez, Mississippi, the road served as a pathway for settling much of what we now know as the South. Twentieth-century writers such as Eudora Welty later embellished its lore of heroes, bandits, and spies, inspiring Southern leaders to revive the Natchez Trace.

With more than 30,000 interred in its 15 acres, Zion Cemetery is the largest African American community burial ground in Memphis. It was opened in 1876 by former slaves to establish a sacred burial ground for people of color. It is the final resting place of luminaries like Reverend Morris Henderson, who led the founding of the cemetery, and Dr. Georgia Patton Washington, Tennessee's first African American physician. Diggs Nolen's name was the byword for crime in 1920s Memphis. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a swashbuckling outlaw. He turned his back on a promising career, his family and consorted with the worst elements of society. Under the tutelage of train robber Frank Holloway, Nolen became a notorious con artist. Later, he and his gun-slinging wife built an empire out of selling narcotics and trafficking stolen goods. Law enforcement caught Nolen, but they could not hold him. Nolen escaped from Leavenworth Prison, led the largest jailbreak in Memphis history and confounded prosecutors with legal wranglings. Author Patrick O'Daniel details Nolen's quixotic quest for criminal fame that earned him the title King of the Memphis Underworld.

Explore the charming town of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee from its humble beginnings as farmland to a bustling tourist attraction.

Pigeon Forge is a booming resort town in Tennessee with the majestic Great Smoky Mountains towering in the background. The national park's birth in 1934 forever changed this once-fertile farming river valley. Pigeon Forge is a vacationing playground with every type of family amusement imaginable, the most noted being Dolly Parton's own Dollywood theme park. The town began with a few large-acre farms and a cluster of farm-related businesses. Its unusual name derived from an iron forge built by Isaac Love in 1819 and the Little Pigeon River that provided power for its operation. The Cherokees, native to the area, named the river because of the countless passenger pigeons lining its banks. Love's son, William, built a gristmill in 1830 that still stands today. The Old Mill is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Over the past 100 years, Kingsport has grown tremendously, becoming one of the pioneer cities in Tennessee in both the areas of commerce and education.

From its humble roots as a frontier town along the Holston River to its emergence as an industrial center in the early 20th century, Kingsport, for many, is an ideal community, a rare combination of Southern mountain beauty matched with urban conveniences typical of larger cities. Camp Forrest was a training, induction, and combatant prisoner-of-war (POW) facility located on the outskirts of Tullahoma, Tennessee.

It was a self-sustaining city where over 70,000 soldiers were stationed and approximately 12,000 civilians were employed throughout World War II. In 1942, the camp transitioned to an enemy alien internment camp and was one of the first civilian internment camps in the United States. By the middle of 1943, it had transitioned into a POW camp and housed primarily German and Italian prisoners. After the war ended, the base was decommissioned and dismantled in 1946. In 1951, the area was recommissioned and expanded into the US Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Complex. Few remains of this important World War II facility exist today; however, the images within provide a glimpse into the effects and realities of a global war on American soil.

Kingsport, the ""Model City,"" was the first American city in the 20th century that was privately financed and professionally planned.

Kingsport's location on the Clinchfield Railroad played a significant role in the development of the city, but it was the early visionaries and leaders who embraced the city's potential and transformed it. Chartered in 1917, it's credited as being the first city in Tennessee to adopt the radical notion of hiring a city manager, and that more than anything is the secret of its success.
