University of Denver

$23.99

The University of Denver (DU) was founded as the Colorado Seminary, in 1864, twelve years before Colorado became a state. For over 150 years, DU has been a part of the Denver community, providing educational opportunities for men, women, professionals, and the working community. The original campus in frontier Denver eventually moved to a treeless prairie donated by Rufus Potato Clark. The move was partially motivated by the fear that the saloons and other distractions of Denver were not conducive to study. In 1982, the institution incorporated Colorado Women's College, and the site became the Park Hill Campus with the law and music schools. DU's concerted efforts to provide its students, and the wider region, with a first-class education are made evident by the tales of resiliency told by faculty, staff, and students as the school overcame brushes with bankruptcy and countless other internal and external threats.

California State University, Northridge

9781467129954

$24.99

California State University, Northridge began like many other institutions in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley, with trees cleared and foundations poured at sites that were once orange, lemon, or avocado groves. While it passed its first years as the San Fernando Valley campus of Los Angeles State College, it became San Fernando Valley State College (SFVSC) before the 1958 fall term. As the campus and student body rapidly grew, SFVSC saw waves of political activism promoting equal opportunities in higher education, protesting racism and discrimination, and denouncing war. Negotiations between student groups, campus administration, and the Faculty Senate ultimately led to the establishment of some of the nation's earliest programs in ethnic and area studies. In 1972, the campus became California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Today, over 2,000 faculty members serve 40,000 students pursuing bachelor's degrees in 69 disciplines, master's degrees in 58 fields, doctorates in two fields, and 14 teaching credential programs.

University of Wyoming

9780738595993

$24.99

The University of Wyoming was founded in 1886, four years prior to statehood. Provisions of the 1862 Morrill Act, also known as the Land Grant College Act, allowed for the teaching of agriculture, mechanic arts, and military tactics but also included literary and scientific studies. With statehood in 1890, the constitution confirmed the establishment of the university, that all students, regardless of gender or race, could attend, and that the cost of instruction may be as nearly free as possible. From a humble beginning in athletics, UW has excelled in football, basketball, and rodeo and has produced such notable figures as Kenny Sailors and Curt Gowdy. Statewide outreach has always been a focus, resulting in a research center in Grand Teton National Park and agricultural farms in many communities. Wyoming's economy relies heavily on the energy industry, and today, the university is a leader in energy-related education and research. Many of the photographs in Campus History Series: University of Wyoming were taken by long-serving university faculty, providing an interesting glimpse of UW's 125-year history.
