Nathaniel Sackett Sr. was head of the secret service at Fishkill, New York, during the Revolutionary War. Monroe was platted by his son Nathaniel Sackett and John Piatt in 1817. The men chose to name this small farming community after the recently elected U.S. president, James Monroe. The Red Onion Hotel, located in the center of town, was a popular stagecoach stop during the 1850s. New London, Connecticut, established its first permanent police force in 1868 when a nightwatch and police station were approved by city council. During those years, farmland started four blocks north of the courthouse. For most people, logging and growing cotton provided income until non-sawmill industries arrived in the late 1950s. Incorporated on July 19, 1949, with a population of 3,000, Northlake's name is derived from its two major thoroughfares: North Avenue and Lake Street. By the 1800s, it was a Mexican land grant named Cucamonga Rancho. Murder, drought, and foreclosure led to the subdivision of the rancho's 13,000 acres. Immigrants from around the world arrived in Cucamonga's renowned wine valley. Italian immigrant Secundo Guasti bought a huge swath of land in southern Cucamonga and planted the world's largest vineyard. Many of Guasti's workers lived north of the winery in an area they named Northtown. Still others planted farms, started businesses, and built schools and churches. The farms are gone, most of the wineries are closed, and parts of the old rancho are now known as Upland and Ontario, but the story of Cucamonga lives on through these and other photographs.

Revolutionary War heroes Thomas Taylor and Wade Hampton I bought 18,500 acres along the Old Camden Road east of the proposed South Carolina capital city of Columbia in 1785. Taylor's family settled what became known as Quinine Hill and Edge Hill. The Dent family moved into the Gills Creek area and established Bethel Methodist Church. In the early 20th century, John Hughes Cooper turned Forest Lake into an upscale residential-recreational development. South Carolina senator James H. Hammond, who had purchased most of Quinine Hill, and Cooper led the creation of the City of Forest Acres in 1935. Cooper was elected the first mayor. Hammond was elected one of the first councilmen. From a community of just 300 people, Forest Acres has grown with churches, schools, parks, and vibrant shopping areas serving over 10,000 residents. Though surrounded by Columbia, Forest Acres is indeed a city apart.

The Missouri State Fair has represented the best of Missouri's agriculture and industry since its commencement in 1901. Oregon's military heritage goes back thousands of years, including native people's warrior traditions.
