Cleveland's Greatest Fighters of All Time

9780738519852

$24.99

Boxing began in Cleveland in the 1880s. As pugilism was an illegal activity, brawling workers from the iron ore docks surreptitiously met on "Whiskey Island" to settle disputes. They would be followed by crowds of spectators who cheered them on and often ended up fleeing from the sheriff. Boxing grew in popularity and soon became a legitimate sport that brought packed houses to such local venues as Cleveland Municipal Stadium, the Cleveland Arena, and the Public Auditorium. Thousands of fans from across the country would come to Cleveland to attend the marquee bouts of many of the city and the nation's most celebrated fighters.

Cleveland's Greatest Fighters of All Time follows the amazing careers of the city's most popular and successful boxers, highlighted by more than 100 rarely-seen images. From the speedy and resilient Johnny Kilbane, Cleveland's first great champion, to the heroic Jimmy Bivins, a true champion in and out of the ring, these stories of triumph and heartbreak are to be enjoyed by boxing fans of all eras. Much of the action inside is described in such a way as to bring the reader ringside.

Columbus

$24.99

Columbus has long been known for its musicians. Unlike New York, San Francisco, Kansas City, Nashville, or even Cincinnati, however, it has never had a definable scene. Still, some truly remarkable music has been made in this musical crossroads by the many outstanding musicians who have called it home. Since 1900, Columbus has grown from the 28th- to the 15th-largest city in the United States. During this period, it has developed into a musically vibrant community that has nurtured the talents of such artists as Elsie Janis, Ted Lewis, Nancy Wilson, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Dwight Yoakam, Bow Wow, and Rascal Flatts. But, in many instances, those who chose to remain at home were as good and, perhaps, even better.

Moses Cleaveland founded the settlement on Lake Erie's shores that would become the city of Cleveland, he opened the way for many dynamic, visionary, and diverse individuals who would not only help Cleveland prosper as one of the greatest cities in the Midwest, but also give the city its unique character. Almeda Adams refused to let her disability keep her from making contributions in education and music. And Zelma Watson George found success in theater and, later, politics as a goodwill ambassador and a delegate to the United Nations. Wapakoneta was officially established in 1833, prospering with the arrival of the railroad, German craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit. It has flourished since and more recently become known in the international spotlight as the hometown of Apollo 11 commander Neil A. Armstrong, the first person to step on the surface of the moon. John Carroll University

$24.99

John Carroll University documents the rich and interesting story of this historic school.

In September 1886, St. Ignatius College opened in a working-class neighborhood on Cleveland's Near West Side. The one classroom building was unpretentious, its mostly Irish and German students were few, its Jesuit faculty numbered four, and its opening was ignored by Cleveland's daily newspapers. Over the next 125 years, the small college became John Carroll University, moved to University Heights, built handsome buildings on a landscaped campus, gained students and faculty, and achieved national recognition. This is the story of how that happened.

Little Cities of Black Diamonds

9780738560410

$24.99

Little Cities of Black Diamonds depicts and documents the history of the Hocking Valley Coalfield communities.

Sitting astride the 14-foot Great Vein of bituminous coal, the communities of the Hocking Valley Coalfield were inextricably linked to the fortunes of a 50-year coal boom. Life in the Little Cities of Black Diamonds was not always easy or prosperous. Employment in the mines and clay plants rose and fell with economic conditions, and labor-management conflict led to strikes and violence. Even today, smoke from a mine fire, set deep underground during a strike in the 1880s, occasionally appears at the surface. Little Cities of Black Diamonds takes an intimate look at the miners, merchants, managers, and magnates who built the cities, villages, businesses, and homes of the Hocking Valley coal boom period. Since collapse of the coal industry around 1920, much has been lost, but the coal boom legacy lives on. In places such as Shawnee, New Straitsville, Eclipse, Glouster, and Haydenville, a small group of dedicated citizens works tirelessly to record, preserve, and celebrate the region's rich heritage.

Waterville

$24.99

Following the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 and the end of the War of 1812, the Maumee Valley became open to settlement. John Pray arrived in 1817, built a dam to run a mill, and the site became known as Pray's Falls. By 1831, Pray had platted the first 50 lots and called it Waterville. Others were attracted to the area, and the trading post inn that Pray had constructed in 1828 was greatly enlarged in 1837. The Columbian House became an important stop on the stagecoach run between Fort Wayne and Detroit and the social center of the village. In 1843, when the Miami and Erie Canal opened through Waterville, there was an economic boom. The business center of town moved from Main Street (River Road) to Third Street, and the town was incorporated in 1882.

Cincinnati Boxing

9780738541129

$24.99

On August 29, 1885, Cincinnati was the scene for the first modern heavyweight championship boxing match using gloves. The Boston Strong Boy, John L. Sullivan, met Dominick McCaffrey at the city's Chester Park that day and came away with the referee's decision. By this time, Cincinnati had been a noted boxing site since the Civil War years, and over the next several decades, it developed a remarkable number of fine boxers in both the professional and amateur ranks. Out of the many gymnasiums in Over-the-Rhine and the West End came world champions such as Freddie Miller, Ezzard Charles, Bud Smith, and Aaron Pryor. This book is the story of a fascinating aspect of Cincinnati's great sports heritage—the boxing game—with all its leather-punching drama. From the frontierlike matches of the 19th-century river town to the urban ethnic and social influences of the 20th and 21st centuries, Cincinnati Boxing brings a rich part of local history to life.

Anderson Township

9781467127134

$24.99

Anderson was established as a township in Hamilton County in 1793, a decade before Ohio became a state. Arriving in the 1790s and early 1800s, early settlers were able to purchase tracts of land suitable for family farms, orchards, and vineyards. Into the early 1900s, Anderson remained a farming community, growing slowly. Railroads introduced into the area in the 1870s offered new opportunities for commerce. Travel along the bordering Ohio and Little Miami Rivers fostered business and recreational activities. The natural beauty of the area attracted families looking for healthy country living. This photographic history of the agriculture, businesses, homes, schools, churches, and other community resources of the area shows how Anderson developed. Many of the amenities residents cherish have their origins in Anderson's early history. Today, Anderson is one of the most desirable places to live and work in the region.

Monroe

$24.99

Nathaniel Sackett Sr. was head of the secret service at Fishkill, New York, during the Revolutionary War. Monroe was platted by his son Nathaniel Sackett and John Piatt in 1817. The men chose to name this small farming community after the recently elected U.S. president, James Monroe. The Red Onion Hotel, located in the center of town, was a popular stagecoach stop during the 1850s. Monroe was a town where everyone met at the stadium for football games, a town where people never locked their doors. A tornado ripped through the village in 1969, and its citizens pulled together in the aftermath. Monroe has retained a very close-knit, small-town atmosphere. This is attributed to the men and women who love this city and donate their time to service organizations that make the town vital. The leaders are very accessible to the citizens and always take the time to smile and say hello.

The Sebrings then decided to find property and build a pottery town, as they had been involved in potteries in East Liverpool and East Palestine. They settled on 200 acres of farmland near the Mahoning River, with the railroad running through the property. After a great deal of work in starting the new town, the Articles of Incorporation were filed in 1899. A Bit of History. Cincinnati, or Losanteville as the place was first named (l'os-ante-ville, the town opposite the mouth), was settled in the latter part of 1788 or beginning of 1789 by a party under Israel Ludlow. The ground on which the city stands was purchased by Matthias Denman, who associated with himself Robert Patterson and John Filson. The latter was killed by Indians on a visit to the site of the proposed settlement, and Ludlow took his place in the enterprise. The date of the settlement is involved in doubt; although Dec. 28, 1788, is generally celebrated as the birthday of the town.

The communities of Stow and Munroe Falls were settled as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve lands laid out in townships in what is now Northeast Ohio. Named after Joshua Stow of Connecticut, Stow Township consisted of rolling hills, dales, and lakes, with the Cuyahoga River running through the southwest corner. The first large party of pioneers arrived in Stow Township in 1804 with William Wetmore. A second group arrived with William Stow (cousin of Joshua) in 1809. By the end of the 19th century, the citizens of Stow and Munroe Falls had turned the wilderness into two villages with schools, churches, businesses, and social activities. Grove City

9780738561721

$24.99

As part of the Northwest Territory, the land encompassing Grove City served as payment to war heroes Gen. Daniel Morgan and Col. William Washington, a distant relative of George Washington, for their Revolutionary War service. They in turn sold this land, and in 1803, the region's first pioneers, Hugh Grant and his wife, Catherine Barr, settled close to what is now downtown Grove City. In 1852, Grove City founder William F. Breck laid out the town plat and helped incorporate the village in 1856. Grove City remained a small farming village throughout the 19th and much of the 20th century, despite its proximity to the fast-growing capital city of Columbus. While the beginning of the 21st century has brought dramatic growth, Grove City continues to hold on to its vibrant, small-town character through its Roaring Twenties-era Thoroughbred racetrack, its picturesque town center, and the numerous educational activities hosted by the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society.

Ohio Valley Pottery Towns

9780738520322

$24.99

The Land Act of 1796 opened the gates for a flood of settlers into the lands of the Upper Ohio River Valley. The natural clay soils of the valley, coupled with an abundance of salt for glazing and the Ohio River as a nearby source for transportation, laid the foundation for what would become the pottery capital of the United States. Naming their new towns for those they left behind-Liverpool, Chester, Newell-English and Irish entrepreneurs established factories for making crockery. The industry boomed and, by the turn of the twentieth century, Ohio Valley pottery was being exported throughout the world. The story of pottery production is more than a list of manufacturers; the towns that grew around these factories and the lifestyles of the people who worked in them provide the social fabric of the Ohio Valley. From the early pioneer villages of the "hand-thrown" period to the towns with bustling shops and regular trolley service, residents built homes, schools, and churches, creating thriving communities.

Legendary Locals of Toledo

9781467101790

$24.99

While Jesup W. Scott proclaimed it the Future Great City of the World in 1868, in reality, Toledo saw little development for the first four decades after its founding in 1837. Plagued by swamps, disease, and unwelcoming occupants, few settled here. But slowly, the city attracted people who saw a chance to improve their lives and perhaps their fortunes, including Edward Drummond Libbey. In 1888, Libbey brought with him the glass industry that would dominate the city's economy and earn it the nickname of Glass Capital of the World. Legendary Locals of Toledo describes the impact of people like Scott, Libbey, and others who shaped Toledo—from the well known whose names grace street signs, buildings, and monuments, to unsung heroes who few remember. Included are pioneers who were the first in their fields as well as leaders of business and industry, representatives of government and the law, and successful entertainers and sports figures. Some were born here and moved on to make their impact, while others lived here and impacted the city.

West Columbus

9781467114639

$24.99

Present-day West Columbus is a collective of neighborhoods born from the western banks of the Scioto River in what became Franklin County on April 30, 1803. The first settlement, Franklinton, was founded by Lucas Sullivant in 1797, platted two years after he received 6,000 acres in payment for surveying the central Ohio portion of the Virginia Military District. Later expansions included the areas of Sullivant's Hill, Rome, and Camp Chase. While the first settlers were farmers and ex-soldiers, the land would also attract Quakers, rail men, real estate moguls, and manufacturers. The neighborhoods found success even though the Scioto River, which birthed the region, on multiple occasions threatened to wash them off the map during three great floods. Characterized by a hardworking and driven population, the community attracted major investments by the mid-1900s, including the expanded operations of the General Motors Fisher Body Plant.

Centered in the midst of the Columbiana County hills, Lisbon was founded in 1803. High hopes for growth and prosperity were first realized through industries producing iron, coal, and pottery; however, even with modern inventions, fascinating people, and hopes for a successful canal, the dream of becoming a city never materialized. During the Civil War, Confederate general John Hunt Morgan and his raiders threatened the community with invasion, but he ultimately surrendered to Union forces. Many political careers had links to Lisbon, including those of Congressman and Copperhead Clement Vallandigham, Sen. Marcus Hanna, Pres. William McKinley, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court John Clarke. Intriguing families such as the Fighting McCooks added to the community's history. Victorian homes abound, and today effort is put into the restoration of other Lisbon homes as well as businesses, creating genuine charm and interest while commercial and industrial progress stretches northward.

Oak Harbor

9780738598796

$24.99

Oak Harbor has a colorful history originating with a man named Adolphus Kraemer, a Toledo merchant who dreamed of developing a town that would rival the likes of Detroit and Cleveland. Adolphus established his dream town near the headwaters of the Portage River, 11 miles inland from Lake Erie. Although it was first platted in 1835 as Hartford by Joseph Wardlow, it was Kraemer who brought his family to settle in the wilderness and develop the town that became Oak Harbor. Since there were several Hartfords in Ohio, Kraemer suggested the name Oak Harbor because the village was located on a river harbor and there was an abundance of oak trees. Initially, Oak Harbor was a lumbering town, but as the timber began to wane, the area saw an influx of German immigrants who understood how to drain and farm the swampy land.

Berlin Center

9780738507095

$24.99

So named as a tribute to the first settlers' native Germany, Berlin Center carries forward a long-held tradition of Ohio farming and artisanship. From its origins as a wooded river region occupied by American Indians, to its eventual development as an agricultural and milling area, Berlin Center has always preserved a commitment to rural living and civic pride. Situated at the crossroads of State Routes 224 and 534, Berlin Center owes a great debt to advances in the rail and river industries. This eclectic community played host to Presidents Garfield and McKinley, and suffered devastation by both flood and fire. Through it all, fortitude carried the town forward to the residential and recreational center it is today. A five-member committee of the Berlin Center Historical Society, whose families have called the area home for several generations, offer an authentic glimpse of the region as it has evolved over the course of a century. Join the authors for an intimate portrait of the area's development, from the milling industry that formed the foundation of the township, to the 1938 Flood Control Act that re-routed the flow of the Mahoning River, to the schoolchildren who shaped the community as they grew to adulthood.

Cincinnati Cemeteries

$24.99

For some who were buried in Cincinnati’s cemeteries, the graveyard is not the last stop on life’s train.

While today Cincinnati is one of the most populous and prosperous cities in the country, its past was not always as bright as its present—from the infamous murder of Pearl Bryan and the 19th century cholera epidemics, to the body snatchers and notorious “resurrection men” who would steal freshly-interred bodies to sell to medical colleges, even going as far to steal the corpse of Pres. Benjamin Harrison’s father. In a city teeming with immigrants and transients, these “sack ‘em up” grave robbers had ample opportunities to supply cadavers to Cincinnati’s medical schools for a hefty profit, and if fresh graves weren't available, they simply lurked for victims in the saloons and dark alleys of Vine Street and the West End.Cincinnati Cemeteriesis not only a history of graveyards and their occupants, but also investigates the culture of death and dying in Cincinnati.

College Hill

$24.99

College Hill, Cincinnati's fifth largest and most diverse neighborhood, owes much of its character to the nineteenth-century colleges that gave the neighborhood its name. Though Farmers' College and the Ohio Female College are long gone, their bucolic campuses left a legacy of park-like streets. Large retirement homes, several more than a century old, make the neighborhood a haven for elderly people, while an abundance of cottage-style homes attract young families, and neat apartments, many dating from the 1920s, accommodate renters. From its earliest days, when settlers dreamed of educating a new generation of American pioneers, College Hill has remained a welcoming home to people of all ages, races, and classes.

Delhi

$24.99

Expeditions led by John Cleves Symmes in 1788 brought the first settlers to the Delhi area. But the township really came to life in 1817, when the Ohio legislature passed a bill to name the area Del High. There are many speculations about the origin of this name, but the true answer has been lost to history. Many farms sprouted up in Delhi, as well as
nearly 60 greenhouses, but only about a half-dozen remain today. As the greenhouses and farms grew, so did the population. Schools, churches, and businesses were built, and in 1829, the Sisters of Charity was established. Residents of Delhi survived the Cholera epidemic of the mid-19th century and three major tornadoes. Delhi citizens
are devout, and many continue to live in the same area in which they were born.

Bryan

$24.99

This book documents the rich and interesting history of the town of Bryan.

Founded by John A. Bryan in 1840, the modest village bearing his name soon came to be known as the Fountain City for its many artesian wells bubbling with clear, cool water. As roads and rail began to crisscross the Midwest, Bryan, the seat of Williams County, grew in local and regional significance as a bustling locale where politics, agriculture, and industry intersected with profit. Perhaps most famous for internationally known products such as the Ohio Art's Etch-A-Sketch and Spangler Candy's Dum Dums pops, Bryan is also the hometown of several notable natives, including a silent screen star, an astronaut, professional athletes, prominent academics, and nationally known authors. Recently named one of the 100 best small towns in the United States, Bryan still reflects the culture and values of traditional America.

Hubbard

9780738532899

$24.99

Hubbard traces its heritage to the historic Connecticut Western Reserve and is the living legacy of Nehemiah Hubbard Jr., a member of the Connecticut Land Company who purchased 15,274 acres and hired Samuel Tylee, Hubbard's first settler, as his land agent to measure and sell lots. Hubbard remained a quiet farming community until
the coal-mining boom of the early 1860s changed its future forever. Immigrants from Europe flocked here to work in the mines, and the industrialization of this small town began in earnest. Prosperity continued until the decline of the region's steel industry in the 1970s and, later, the loss of several major businesses. Along with the new millennium,
however, came the formation of the Joint Economic Development District between Hubbard City and Township, which brought much-needed development to the Interstate 80, State Route 7/U.S. 62 corridor.

Forgotten Columbus

$24.99

A fascinating and insightful look at a forgotten era in Columbus, Ohio's history, today the state's largest city with a robust and exciting past.

Columbus, Ohio, ""an odd amalgam of the planned and the spontaneous,"" was founded on the banks of the Scioto River in 1812 as the new seat of this young state's government. Located in the wilderness of central Ohio, nearly equidistant to the ""real"" cities of Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo, Columbus experienced 100 years of unprecedented growth from which it would emerge the state's capital in more than title alone. Today, it is Ohio's largest city. Forgotten Columbus features many people, places, and events that defined this burgeoning 19th and early-20th century city. And above all, the places--from the Old Ohio Penitentiary, to Fort Hayes, to the recently revitalized Brewery District--which either no longer exist, or have changed so dramatically over the years that they are barely recognizable. Residents and visitors alike will find this a fascinating, insightful, and at times surprising look back at a forgotten era in Columbus's history.

Woodland Cemetery, the second-oldest cemetery in Cleveland, was named after a romantic description of an unseen Cleveland that was part of a popular 1803 pastoral poem, The Pleasures of Hope, by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell. Its 60 acres provide a primer on American cemetery design, from the rural cemetery intricacies of the 1850s to the more rambling style of the late 19th century to the rectangular 20th-century grid. Its mausoleums are designed in Classical, Victorian, Egyptian, and Richardson rustic styles. These varied structures—along with angels, obelisks, and military memorials—are symbolic of the residents resting within the gates.

Sheffield Village

$24.99

The Village of Sheffield was founded on the Lake Erie plain and a sandy ridge of glacial Lake Warren. Black River and French Creek course through rich farmlands, once home to Archaic and Woodland Indians. Originally surveyed as Township 7 of Range 17 in the Connecticut Western Reserve, hearty pioneers arrived here in 1815 from the Berkshire Mountains of New England, naming their settlement Sheffield after their Massachusetts town. In the mid-1800s, another wave of immigrants arrived from Bavaria, adding cultural richness to the community. In 1894, industrialist Tom Johnson constructed giant steel mills on the west side of the river, and Sheffield Village eventually broke away, choosing to retain its agrarian identity. Today Sheffield Village is in transition to a modern residential/commercial community but keeps much of its natural character by virtue of parklands along stream valleys. Fortunately, fine examples of homestead architecture have been preserved throughout the village.

Thornville and Thorn Township

9780738588582

$24.99

Thorn Township is a farming community about 30 minutes east of Columbus, Ohio; its name derived from the plentiful thorn bushes that dominate the landscape. After the Revolutionary War, people from Virginia and Pennsylvania began to migrate to Ohio. Among those, several chose a little hill in Thorn Township to take up residence, establishing churches, businesses, and schools. In 1811, Thornville was recognized as a village. Thorn Township makes up the northern section of Perry County. Due to its rich, flat earth, farming remains the chief economic venture of the community. Originally, the northern edge of Thorn Township was known as Big Buffalo Swamp. However, when the Ohio Canal was constructed between the 1820s and 1840s, the swamp was excavated to form Buckeye Lake. Since then, people have built their homes along the shores and canals of the lake, as well as in the villages of Thornville and Thornport.

Orange Township

9780738507309

$24.99

Connecticut once claimed three million acres of unsurveyed land that stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, between the 41st and 42nd parallels. The state ceded a 120-mile stretch of this land, west from Pennsylvania to the borders of Lake Erie, and sold it to a group of developers at 40¢ an acre. This land was subsequently purchased by the early settlers of Orange Township, who pushed their way through wilderness to the Chagrin River and established villages between the river and the wooded hills. Located in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, Orange Township is comprised of the present-day communities of Gates Mills, Hunting Valley, Moreland Hills, Orange Village, Pepper Pike, Chagrin Falls, Mayfield, and Solon. Orange Township, Ohio recounts the history of this area from 1850 to 1950. Tremendous growth followed the primary settling of the area, as immigrants arrived by steamship and by train. Wealthy Clevelanders sought land suitable for high quality residential living. These original settlers were described as landowners, scholars, and adventurers. Through family portraits, from the Burnets and James Abram Garfield, 20th president of the United States, to the Van Sweringen brothers, Orange Township unfolds in the pages of this book in intriguing detail.

Columbus Radio

$24.99

Two professors and a preacher invented Columbus radio. It began with science experiments in classrooms and a minister's desire to expand beyond his churchgoing audience. By 1922, government licenses had been issued for WEAO at Ohio State University and WJD at Denison University. At this same time, a Baptist minister went on the air for an hour each Sunday morning using a 10-watt transmitter licensed as WMAN. In this story of Columbus radio, the work of the professors and the preacher will evolve into radio with advertiser-supported programs of information and entertainment. Three important radio stations will serve a growing Columbus radio audience in different ways: WEAO becomes WOSU, a national pioneer in using radio for teaching; WMAN becomes WCOL and in the 1960s is number one in audience size; and CBS affiliate WBNS becomes the class act of Columbus radio, retaining the major share of local listeners for many decades. Including many other stations of lesser influence, the illustrated stories of Columbus radio are told in this book.

Licking County is located at the geographic center of Ohio. The history of the county began over 2,000 years ago when an ancient people known as the Hopewells occupied the area. While they disappeared for no apparent reason, the large earthen mounds left behind give modern man clues to their type of culture. Licking County is home to a countless number of these mounds with the Great Circle Earthworks being the largest. In 1808, Licking County was established with Newark as its county seat. The construction of the Ohio Canal began in 1825 and finished in 1833. The canal brought a new era to Licking County, and Newark became a beehive of activity. The railroads came and the canal gradually began to lose its value. In 1908, the great Ohio Canal was filled in. For the past 200 years, many people have had a connection to Licking County, and their names continue to keep the history of the county alive.

During the World War I era, wealthy Toledo industrialists also arrived, building riverside mansions. Over 100 of this small 19th-century community's architectural treasures still stand, and they include examples of nearly every major domestic architectural style popular from the 1820s to the 1930s. John D. Rockefeller's Cleveland roots stretched across the oil-drenched banks and murky flats of Kingsbury Run in Cleveland and ended in the wooded sanctuary at Forest Hill. It had formal gardens, greenhouses, a lake and lily pond, a golf course, a horse track, and acres of farmland. In the early 1900s, tourists and local residents rode the streetcar out Millionaires' Row to East Cleveland, where they peered through the imposing iron gates scrolled with an R to peek at the gatekeeper's lodge, the manicured lawns, and the road that led to the mansion atop the hill. Unfortunately, in 1917, Forest Hill burned to the ground. Because so many records, mementos, and photographs perished, the estate remains as shrouded in secrecy today as it did during its lifetime. Around Jefferson and Roaming Shores

9781467163125

$24.99

When Gideon Granger arrived in the area that would become Jefferson in 1803, he found an inhospitable land of dense forest, harsh winters, and sultry, humid summers. Even the most basic supplies were a day’s journey away. However, the former US postmaster general saw the potential in this land that he named for the president he had served, Thomas Jefferson.

The city would later become the center of the US abolitionist movement in the pre–Civil War years as well as the seat of Ashtabula County government when the county was formed in 1808. Nearby Rock Creek, organized in 1819, never grew as big as its neighbor. However, the village is home to a Civil War cemetery, a picturesque creekside park, and one of Ohio’s most talented chainsaw artists. Roaming Shores, a lakeside residential community with hundreds of homes, was created in 1966–1967 when the Rock Creek dam was constructed, forming the largest private-access lake in Ohio.

Sandy Mitchell Pavick has lived in northeast Ohio for more than 25 years. She is a full-time writer and is the author of four previous titles for Arcadia Publishing. For this book, Pavick has amassed images, many of which have never been published, from dozens of private archives as well as from Jefferson area libraries, museums, and historical societies.

Baseball in Columbus

In the spring of 1865, the first spring after the end of the Civil War, three baseball clubs were founded in downtown Columbus. This local enthusiasm for the game reflected the national trend during the post-war era, when baseball, or "base ball" as it was called, was spreading rapidly throughout the United States. Baseball in Columbus begins with these earliest baseball pioneers and tells the story of the national pastime in the capital city right up to the present-day Columbus Clippers of the International League. Columbus first made the "big leagues" in 1883 with the Columbus Buckeyes of the American Association, and local fans have embraced the city's teams and players ever since. Legendary Locals of Dover

9781467100991

$24.99

In 1807, Dover's founders, Christian Deardorff and Jesse Slingluff, carved their dream out of Ohio's rugged wilderness. Their choice of location on the Tuscarawas River would prove wise as local industry benefited from the proximity to a water source. Progress was slow at first, but the advent of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827 and the steel industry, helped the small town on the river grow into a thriving city. Over time, the city developed its own niche with an opera house, community theater, great museums, and wonderful schools. Out of this uniquely American setting came a cast of interesting and enterprising characters. These include industrialist Jeremiah Reeves, Rear Adm. Herald Stout, Broadway actors Elliot and J.C. Nugent, and Pixar Animation Studios writer and director Bob Peterson. Inspired, yet not defined by their small-town roots, the men and women chronicled in this book represent true Americana and the American dream realized.

Lorain, Ohio

9780738501789

$24.99

How the city of Lorain, Ohio, came to be and the vital role it played on its way to becoming known throughout the world.

The City of Lorain was incorporated in 1874 by the town council. It was named after the county, which had been named by Heman Ely, who thought the area looked very much like the Province of Lorraine in France. Lorain's location next to Lake Erie and the early arrival of the B&O Railroad in 1871 made the city a hotbed for industry. The Hayden Brass Works built a large plant on Elyria Avenue. Captain Thew, a ship captain on the lakes, developed an improved gear system for a steam shovel, and that started the Lorain Thew Shovel Co., which became known worldwide.

Lorain grew tremendously in the 1890s. Construction of the Johnson Steel Rail Company started in 1894, and in just 10 years, the population of the City of Lorain tripled. In 1894, the American Stove Works built a plant in Lorain, where they made heaters and furnaces. Three years later, the American Shipbuilding Company built a yard and launched hundreds of ships before it closed in 1984. Lorain, Ohio, certainly did its part during World War II; many men went into service, and Lorain produced its own share of heroes. The shipyard was also put to work by the government to build the USS Lorain, a frigate.

Today, more than thirty craft breweries ply a prosperous trade in the capital city. After huge California craft brewery Stone became serious about Columbus for its East Coast expansion, Scotland's successful BrewDog chose central Ohio for its U.S. beachhead. On September 13, 1876, the bell on Atwood Hall rang, students assembled, and Rio Grande College began its 140-year search for identity and its struggle for existence. Ira Haning, a Freewill Baptist minister, conveyed the idea of a college to a prominent couple, Nehemiah and Permelia Atwood. Nehemiah passed away in 1869, and supposedly, his last words were Permelia, build the college. Permelia deeded 10 acres and financed Atwood Hall and the Boarding Hall, and Rio Grande College became a reality. Upon Permelia's death in 1885, Rio Grande faced the first of many financial pitfalls. Her estate was willed to the college, but the heirs of her second husband contested it in an action that would be resolved by the Ohio Supreme Court in 1896. As a college, junior college, community college, and currently, as a university, Rio Grande continues to seek a definitive identity.

Williams County

9780738561950

$24.99

Created by the Ohio legislature in 1820 and named for Revolutionary War hero David Williams, Williams County is situated in the northwest corner of Ohio, bordered by Michigan on the north and Indiana on the west. In the early 1830s, settlers began pouring into the county, primarily farm families seeking inexpensive land and new lives on the frontier. Many were European immigrants or the children of immigrants willing to perform the backbreaking labor necessary to clear and drain the forests and convert them into fertile farmlands. Arrival of the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad in 1854 opened new markets for local agricultural products and small industries and gave birth to bustling new communities along the rail line. The strong work ethic, faith, entrepreneurial spirit, and sense of community that has characterized the people of Williams County—past and present—has worked a wonderful transformation, turning a wilderness into fine farms and communities offering modern public facilities and services, numerous businesses and industries, and a high quality of life in a rural setting.

Greeks of Stark County

9780738560786

$24.99

By the early 20th century, Stark County was one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation. The home of martyred president William McKinley had become a major industrial center, with alloy steel as the engine of growth for the booming local economy. To fill the ever-increasing demand for labor, waves of immigrants from Greece and Asia Minor settled in Canton and Massillon. Some sought economic opportunity; others were fleeing the Pontian Black Sea coast, where ethnic cleansing of Greeks accompanied the creation of the Turkish state. For the immigrant earning less than $3 a day, building a church meant making a commitment to a new life. In Canton, St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1913 and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in 1917. In Massillon, St. George Greek Orthodox Church was established in 1931. Churches and mutual aid organizations provided cohesiveness to the dynamic, often fractious, Greek community, which survived world wars, economic depression, and social discrimination and continues to flourish today.

At the height of its popularity, the park attracted more than 8,000 visitors per day. Guests ranged from future US president (then congressman) William McKinley to internationally known trapeze artists. Although reporters quickly dubbed the park the Niagara of Ohio and predicted it would become famous abroad, by the early 1900s the High Bridge Glens had faded into obscurity, ultimately leaving behind little evidence that it ever existed at all.

Daytonians hold in profound reverence the memories of their forefathers, who risked their lives and their fortunes in subduing the unbroken forest and its savage denizens, and in laying strong, wide, and deep the foundations of a city which to-day contains as many elements of advancement, and is endowed with as many of the attributes of genuine happiness, as any city in the United States. There is a just cause for congratulation in the growth and development of Dayton. Its magnificence is a crowning monument to the enlightenment and progresssiveness of its citizens--a devout, law-abiding, and upright people, whose stalwart and robust Americanism constitutes their chief excellence. It is no such Americanism as turns up its pantaloons every time it rains in London, or affects a pronunciation of our glorious tongue unknown to lexicons, but presumed to be an echo of the British Isles. Far from it. Dayton proudly boasts of an exalted citizenship, imbued with the spirit of an undying loyalty to country, whose pride and inspiration are not in Frederick the Great, or Louis XIV, or William the Conqueror; not in a hero of England, or of Germany, or of France, or of Ireland, but in George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

A time capsule, which had been buried under the cornerstone of the Greene County Courthouse in 1901, became a matter of intense local interest when it was opened at the courthouse centennial celebrations in 2001. The small copper box was filled with items of historical significance for Greene County: issues of newspapers, histories of churches and organizations, school class lists, and business advertisements, all in mint condition. This exciting discovery provided a fascinating snapshot of life in this rural community at a time of great technological change. Greene County, Ohio: Time Capsule of 1901 contains many of the pictures and documents enclosed in that time capsule, with interesting supplemental photographs provided by local historical institutions of the people and places described in those documents. One local newspaper article, published the day the capsule was buried and found within it, gives a prediction of how the county seat of Xenia would become a great metropolis by the time the capsule was to be opened in 2001-with "great, tall buildings of stone and iron...as far as the eye can reach," and "flying machines...to be seen everywhere."

Norwood

$24.99

Norwood has long used the tagline Gem of the Highlands.
While the origin of this name is not clear, it is believed to refer to Norwood's beautiful locale among the hills and valleys of southwestern Ohio. Norwood got its start in 1809, when Samuel D. Bowman opened a tavern for travelers at the intersection of present-day Montgomery and Smith Roads. During the early 1900s, industries flocked to the area because of easy access to crisscrossing railways and highways. Increased taxes imposed by the neighboring city of Cincinnati also encouraged businesses to move to Norwood. Norwood was soon dubbed the city that industry
built. More recently, the Rookwood Commons and Pavilion
development has helped to revive local businesses. Norwood delves into this unique city's past, uncovering the people, places, and events that have added to its colorful character.

Bath Township

9780738519357

$24.99

Bath Township was sculpted from the Western Reserve after Native Americans ceded the land to the United States at the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry. Captured here in over 200 vintage photographs is the development of the area into Bath Township, through the trials and triumphs of its earliest settlers. Originally named Hammondsburgh after one of the first families to settle in the area, Bath Township was formally organized in 1818. Industry sprang up in the form of grist, flour, saw, and woolen mills along the Yellow Creek in Ghent Village. Gradually, a handful of small population centers or corners came into existence within the township. Names like Hammond's Corners, Stony Hill, Ghent, and Ira are still used today, while the names of Hurd's Corners, Little Germany, and Farley's Corners are seldom spoken. Pictured here are the buggy works, blacksmith shops, cheese factories, general stores, and post offices, and the residents that operated them, creating the inviting area that residents cherish today.
