Once known as the Rubber Capital of the World, Akron now hails as the City of Invention. As the fifth-largest city in Ohio, it has grown from an industrial center to a hub of culture and science. During this change, Akron's downtown went from a vibrant retail district to being somewhat empty; however, the city was reborn with a baseball stadium for the Akron RubberDucks (the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians), new restaurants, concert venues, and in its role as a host for national events such as the 2014 Gay Games. As recently as 20 years ago, rubber workers made up a large part of Akron's population, but the number of people employed in the rubber industry dropped by half between 2000 and 2007. The Village of Sheffield was founded on the Lake Erie plain and a sandy ridge of glacial Lake Warren. Black River and French Creek course through rich farmlands, once home to Archaic and Woodland Indians. Originally surveyed as Township 7 of Range 17 in the Connecticut Western Reserve, hearty pioneers arrived here in 1815 from the Berkshire Mountains of New England, naming their settlement Sheffield after their Massachusetts town. In the mid-1800s, another wave of immigrants arrived from Bavaria, adding cultural richness to the community. In 1894, industrialist Tom Johnson constructed giant steel mills on the west side of the river, and Sheffield Village eventually broke away, choosing to retain its agrarian identity. Today Sheffield Village is in transition to a modern residential/commercial community but keeps much of its natural character by virtue of parklands along stream valleys. Fortunately, fine examples of homestead architecture have been preserved throughout the village.

In 1799, weary settlers traveled north from the Ohio River and west from Chillicothe to form a settlement that would eventually become Greenfield, Ohio. Those early settlers staked out their future along Paint Creek. Gen. Duncan McArthur platted the town, which grew quickly. Prominent leaders over the years included Rear Adm. Noble Irwin, Gen. Quarrying was a major industry from roughly 1850 to 1950 in
Berea, attracting large numbers of immigrants in search of work.
Baldwin Institute and University (1846) and German Wallace College (1863) created an academic atmosphere, and Berea's citizens became an eclectic and resilient mix of academics, business people, and immigrants. Eventually, quarrying ended, and the downtown business district, the Triangle, was nearly destroyed by fire three times. Each time the determined residents of Berea rebuilt. Today, Berea is a unique Cleveland suburb. Baldwin University and German Wallace College merged, and the south side of town has been devoted to recreation by the Cleveland Metroparks System and the City of Berea. The largest quarry became Coe Lake, a site for fishing, canoeing, art fairs, concerts, and ice-skating. Orange Township

Connecticut once claimed three million acres of unsurveyed land that stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, between the 41st and 42nd parallels. Central College

The area of Amalthea, better known as Central College, was platted by Timothy Lee in 1816. Situated three miles southeast of Westerville, Central College was built along Big Walnut Creek. A college known as the Blendon Institute was formed in 1832. In 1842, the institute was given to the Presbyterian church to form the Central College of Ohio. However, due to financial struggles, the school—later known as Central College Academy—closed in 1894. The Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association purchased the defunct school property and created the Ohio Home for the Aged and Infirm Deaf; it was the first home of its kind in the state. The village of Central College filled with excitement when the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon and Delaware Railroad was slated to pass through town in 1873. However, the railroad announced that it would instead pass through Westerville, and because of the lack of public transportation through Central College, the town failed to grow.

Knox County Bridges

Knox County had its beginnings at the confluence of the waters of Center Run with the Kokosing River. This pictorial history of the spanning of area waterways is mostly a story of disasters. Many of the photographs are of the wreckage of failed bridges and what is left of the vehicles that brought them down. They depict a county highway department that was only reactive. The practice was to send the crews out to pick up the pieces and then figure out how to repair or replace the bridge. Changes began to occur with the Silver Bridge disaster in 1967 over the Ohio River, as the federal government instituted inspection of all public bridges at two-year intervals. With the information afforded through inspections and additional funding mechanisms, counties by the mid-1980s had the tools to be proactive toward bridge maintenance. A scheduled plan to inspect structures for repairs or replacement prior to failure began to occur. During this period, construction materials other than timber--stronger and longer-lasting materials--became the norm, thus saving lives.

In 1883, a group of women, concerned about conditions for children in Cincinnati's hospitals, proposed establishing a hospital for children. The hospital was incorporated in November 1883 and opened a few months later in a rented three-bedroom house. Chippewa Lake

Formed by glaciers, Chippewa Lake has been drawing visitors since early Indian tribes came to hunt and fish; settlers first laid down roots in the area during the War of 1812. Soon, visitors hoping to escape the heat of the city discovered the cooling waters of Chippewa. Eventually, a pleasure resort was developed, and the area expanded. Churches, a school, a brickyard, a grain elevator, general stores, a post office, and a meat market were established. Passenger trains delivered families laden with picnic baskets to Chippewa Lake Park, an amusement park that featured water activities, a carousel, a roller coaster, and a ballroom. Dignitaries, politicians, and entertainers frequented the park. A cottage community developed along the shoreline in neighborhoods like Gloria Glens, Briarwood Beach, and Chippewa-on-the-Lake. Before refrigeration, ice was harvested from the lake in the winter and shipped as far away as Philadelphia. After 100 years in operation, Chippewa Lake Park closed in 1978. The lake is currently owned by the Medina County Park District and still offers spectacular sunsets and public fishing and boating.
